Iran honors its great genius, Avicenna
Abu Ali al-Hussein also known in the West as Avicenna is one of the foremost philosophers of the golden age of Islamic tradition. He is also known as al-Sheikh al-Rais( or the leader among the wise men).
In the west he is also known as the "Prince of Physicians" for his famous medical text al-Qanun or "Canon". In Latin translations, his works influenced many Christian philosophers.
He was also an astronomer, chemist, geologist, Islamic psychologist, logician and poet. He is regarded as the most famous and influential polymath of the Islamic Golden Age.
He started studying philosophy by reading various Greek, Muslim and other books on this subject. He also knew well about the philosophy of Aristotle.
Some of his scientific and philosophical theories and ideas still stand today which cause scientists and philosophers from around get together every year to discuss his thoughts and commemorate his outstanding contributions to the world of philosophy and science even more than 1000 years after his death.
The book is known for the discovery of contagious and sexually transmitted diseases and the introduction of quarantine to limit the spread of infectious diseases. His other most famous works are The Book of Healing and a vast philosophical and scientific encyclopedia.
Many of his treatises and books were taught at different universities around the world. It is said that so far only 40% of his works have been published and a delegation from the United Nations has been assigned to study the remaining 60% of his works so as to be published in the future.
Avicenna was born c. 980 in Afshana, near Bukhara, the capital of Samanids, a Persian dynasty in Central Asia and Khorasan. He died in 1037 CE in the Iranian province of Hamedan.

Guide to Eastern Philosophy and Religion
Eastern philosophy includes the various philosophies of Asia, including Indian philosophy, Chinese philosophy, Iranian/Persian philosophy, Japanese philosophy, and Korean philosophy. The term can also sometimes include Babylonian philosophy, Jewish philosophy, and Islamic philosophy, though these may also be considered Western philosophies.
Eastern religions have not been as concerned by questions relating to the nature of a single God as the universe's sole creator and ruler. The distinction between the religious and the secular tends to be much less sharp in Eastern philosophy, and the same philosophical school often contains both religious and philosophical elements. Thus, some people accept the so-called metaphysical tenets of Buddhism without going to a temple and worshipping. Some have worshipped the Taoist deities religiously without bothering to delve into the theological underpinnings, while others embrace the Taoist religion while ignoring the mythological aspects.
This arrangement stands in marked contrast to some recent philosophy in the West, which has traditionally enforced either a completely unified philosophic/religious belief system (for example, the various sects and associated philosophies of Christianity, Judaism, and Islam), or a sharp and total repudiation of some forms of religion by philosophy

Omar Khayyám
Full name Ghiyath al-Din Abu'l-Fath Umar ibn Ibrahim Al-Nishapuri al-Khayyami.
Born 18 May 1048
Died 1131
School Persian mathematics, Persian poetry, Persian philosophy
Main interests Poetry, Mathematics, Philosophy, Astronomy
Influenced by Abū Rayhān al-Bīrūnī, Avicenna
Omar Khayyám (Persian: Nishapur 1048--1131) was a Persian mathematician, astronomer, philosopher and poet. He also wrote treatises on mechanics, geography, and music. Born in Nishapur, at a young age he moved to Samarkand and obtained his education there, afterwards he moved to Bukhara and became established as one of the major mathematicians and astronomers of the medieval period. He is the author of one of the most important treatises on algebra written before modern times, the Treatise on Demonstration of Problems of Algebra, which includes a geometric method for solving cubic equations by intersecting a hyperbola with a circle. He contributed to a calendar reform. His significance as a philosopher and teacher, and his few remaining philosophical works, have not received the same attention as his scientific and poetic writings. Zamakhshari referred to him as "the philosopher of the world". Many sources have testified that he taught for decades the philosophy of Ibn Sina in Nishapur where Khayyám was born and buried and where his mausoleum today remains a masterpiece of Iranian architecture visited by many people every year. Outside Iran and Persian speaking countries, Khayyám has had an impact on literature and societies through the translation of his works and popularization by other scholars. The greatest such impact was in English-speaking countries; the English scholar Thomas Hyde (1636--1703) was the first non-Persian to study him. The most influential of all was Edward FitzGerald (1809--83), who made Khayyám the most famous poet of the East in the West through his celebrated translation and adaptations of Khayyám's rather small number of quatrains (rubaiyaas) in Rubáiyát of Omar Khayyám.

Philosophical arguments in the Nahjul Balagha - Professor Sajjad H. Rizvi
Islamic Thought Academic Nahjul Balagha Conference 2012 took place in Peterborough on 30th September 2012. This academic conference explored in depth the wide-ranging themes of faith, humanity and politics in the sermons, letters and sayings of Imam Ali contained within Nahjul Balagha. This conference aimed to stimulate research and discussions pertaining to the influence of his teachings in the era in which he lived, and their practical applicability in challenging issues in the modern world. Professor Sajjad H. Rizvi delivered a presentation of his paper titled: Philosophical arguments in the Nahjul Balagha.
Professor Sajjad Rizvi read modern history at Christ Church, Oxford (1991-1994) where he developed an interest in philosophy and in particular Islamic philosophy. At the time, because his interests were in the modern world, he read Modern Middle East Studies for an MPhil, staying in Oxford (1994-1996), specialising with a dissertation on philosophy in 19th century Qajar Iran. He obtained his PhD in 2000 with a doctoral dissertation on the philosophy of existence in the thought of the Iranian Safavid philosopher Mulla Sadra Shirazi (d. c. 1635). He worked at the Quranic Studies unit at the Institute of Ismaili Studies in London, and then taught for two years in the Department of Theology and Religious Studies at the University of Bristol. He has been teaching at the Institute of Arab and Islamic Studies at the University of Exeter since 2004.
Professor Rizvi's work is based on Islamic intellectual history, with particular interests in post- Avicennan philosophical, theological and mystical traditions, Quranic exegesis and textual hermeneutics. He has also advised various government departments and private sector concerns on Iraq, Iran, Shii Islam in the Gulf, and Islam in Britain and Europe.

[English/French Subtitles] Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah(HA) - War On Terror - March 21, 2002
Landmark speech by Hizbullah Secretary General - delivered on the 20st of March 2002 (6th Muharram 1423) regarding the recently (at that time recently) US imposed so-called "War on Terrorism" - following the attacks on the World Trade Centre Towers in New York.
This version has English and French Subtitles.
"The racial discrimination towards the blacks is still persisting in every aspect. Moreover, there is a racial discrimination towards the Red Indians who are the original inhabitants of the country. ...I tell you frankly that if it wasn't for the determined willingness, ... and fight of the Palestinian people, the Americans and their civilization would have decided to solve that problem of...Palestinians just like they did with the Indians. This is the picture that lies in the mind of the American." --Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah
Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah - Muharram 7, 1423
The Secretary General of Hizbullah, Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah(HA), addressing the people on the seventh night of Muharram for the year 1423 (March 20, 2002)
In this lecture, Sayyed Hassan(HA), explains the roots of Zionist occupation and American colonialism and so-called "New World Order", this is well worth reading.
In the Name of Allah the most Beneficent and most Merciful.
Praise be to Allah the lord of the world, and may peace and Allah's praises be upon our master and prophet, the purifier of our sins, and the love of our hearts Mohammed ibn Abdullah followed by his pure progeny, rightful followers, and all the martyrs and mujahideen for Allah's teachings since the birth of Adam until the day of judgment.
May peace be upon you my lord and master Abu Abdullah Al Hussein, and upon those spirits who are floating around thy grave.
I send you my adoration as long as night follows day.
I ask my dear Allah to keep me committed to continuously visit thee and thy family.
May peace be upon Al Hussein, Ali the son of Al Hussein, the sons of Al Hussein, and the followers of Al Hussein.
Dear brothers and sisters, May peace be upon you all;
Allah says in his Glory book Verily, Fir'aun (Pharaoh) exalted himself in the land and made its people sects, weakening (oppressing) a group (i.e. Children of Israel) among them: killing their sons, and letting their females live. Verily, he was of the Mufsidûn (i.e. those who commit great sins and crimes, oppressors, tyrants). And We wished to do a favor to those who were weak (and oppressed) in the land, and to make them rulers and to make them the inheritors, And to establish them in the land, and We let Fir'aun (Pharaoh) and Hâmân and their hosts receive from them that which they feared.
Let's remember some of the words in my speech I read to you on the first night.
I said that Al Hussein may peace be upon him, rose up and fought with the very few members of his family and his companions. He was protecting Islam, the values of Islam, and the existence of this religion, in order to prevent its termination, transformation, vanishing, or the manipulation of its teachings in an aim to send the people back to the early days of ignorance.
I added saying that there are many challenges at this time in which we are living. The declaration of war by the American Administration these days is nothing but a war on Islam, on the values of Islam, on the understandings of Islam, on the Quraan of Islam, and on the Prophet of Islam on the grounds that the existence this religion lives among the people of this nation and its Muslim followers.
I would like to stand up today in the atmosphere of this declaration of war to try and comprehend, explain, and realize the issues widely surrounding us. Consequently we'll realize our stand, the enemy we are facing, and the sort of reality or fact we are living in at this present time.
When we go back and read some of the words or phrases of the American president Bush speeches during the past few days, weeks and months, we will find that some of his words and phrases identified the title of this war.
For example, from what he said: it is the responsibility of each American at the present time to guarantee the domination and the spread of the American values in other parts of this world. I repeat the domination and the spread of the American values in other parts of this world. He spoke these words while he was addressing his officers and soldiers, encouraging them to be patient, endure and tolerate the difficulties.
He told them we are fighting for the values of civilization (of course it would be the materialistic American civilization!). He promises to send forces to this country or that in more than one occasion, and that he aims at transferring the values of the American society to the various countries, societies, and states, since terror cannot be exterminated by the means of military and security only. Yet he says it should be fought by means of culture, which means that we should wipe out the culture that gives birth to terrorists and uprisings, in order to replace it

"On That Day" // Iranian Films for Peace: A Series of Shorts Produced by Bahman Ghobadi
Towards the end of 2007, when our fears of a military conflict between the U.S. and Iran were at their peak, Make Films Not War resolved to use images and stories to continue building a cultural bridge between our two societies, even as our governments ratcheted up their language of war.
We made contact with award-winning Iranian filmmaker Bahman Ghobadi (HALF MOON, TURTLES CAN FLY, A TIME FOR DRUNKEN HORSES), and discussed how best to go about this. We decided to commission five up-and-coming Iranian filmmakers, two of them as young as 10 and 13, to produce a series of short videos on the themes of war and peace. Ghobadi's company, Tehran based MIJ Productions, co-produced.
We hope you enjoy these Video Postcards from Iran, and we encourage you to share them with your friends and family. As the political drama unfolds, and the threat of conflict remains all too real, Make Films Not War believes that we need more cultural exchange and more cross-cultural understanding to offset the efforts of those who would put us on a path to war.
About the Filmmaker:
Babak Amini, 29, was born in Iranian Kurdistan, and graduated with a major in philosophy from Tehran University. Amini has worked for many years as an Assistant Director with Bahman Ghobadi, including work on A TIME FOR DRUNKEN HORSES and TURTLES CAN FLY.

This spare film tells the story of a young Iraqi exile living in Iran, following her as she travels to Iraq to testify about Saddam's crimes against her family. The landscape is windswept and unforgiving, and her only companion is a lonely border guard, who is curious about why she wants to enter Iraq, wracked as it is by terrorist violence and the U.S. occupation. A minimalist but affecting musical score adds to the scene, as does the expansive countryside, all building up to a surprising end.

The Medium of Contingency
Documentation of a discussion held at Thomas Dane Gallery in conjunction with the exhibition "New York to London and Back - The Medium of Contingency"
Wednesday, January 19, 6.30- 8 pm
The notion of ‘contingency’ has become crucial both in contemporary philosophy, and, as the artists in this show suggest, in contemporary art. If thought and practice are to abandon the idealism of autonomy and acknowledge the networks they are a part of, the question becomes one of developing a thought and a practice that opens to contingency. The discussion will explore how works of art write contingency into the present; are in turn written by the contingency of their materials; and how these exchanges interact with the market.
The discussion will include co-organizer Robin Mackay, editor of the transdisciplinary journal Collapse; Reza Negarestani, Iranian philosopher and author of Cyclonopedia: Complicity with Anonymous Materials, will join via live link form Malaysia; Elie Ayache, options trader and author of The Blank Swan; Matthew Poole, freelance curator, writer, and Director of The Centre for Curatorial Studies at The University of Essex; artist Scott Lyall; and co-organizer Miguel Abreu.
