Founded by Harry N. Abrams in 1949, Abrams was the first company in the United States to specialize in the creation and distribution of art books.^[2][3] Times Mirror acquired the company in 1966, and Harry Abrams retired in 1977. For many years, the company was under the direction of Paul Gottlieb (publisher), until January 2001, eighteen months before his death.^[4] Abrams had been acquired by La Martinière Groupe in 1997.^[3]

Stewart, Tabori & Chang (STC)[link]

Stewart, Tabori & Chang (STC) was founded in 1981 by Andrew Stewart, Lena Tabori, and Nai Chang, three former Harry N. Abrams executives. STC was purchased by Éditions de La Martinière in 2000 and is now an imprint of ABRAMS under the direction of Senior Vice President and Publisher Leslie Stoker.^[32] STC is a publisher of illustrated inspirational and practical titles. The house specializes in the categories of cooking, crafts, interior design, sports, green living, sports, pets, and popular culture. Some of STC's bestselling titles are Alton Brown's I'm Just Here for the Food, Last-Minute Knitted Gifts, Bunny Williams's Affair with a House, and Grandmother Remembers, which has sold 2 million copies. Over a dozen of STC's cookbooks have won James Beard^[33] and International Association of Culinary Professionals^[34] awards over the years, and three STC cookbooks have been named Best Book of the Year by those organizations.

Wesley Wales Mortimer "Wes" Anderson (born May 1, 1969)^[3][4][5][6] is an American film director, screenwriter, actor, and producer of features, short films and commercials. He was nominated for a 2001 Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay for The Royal Tenenbaums and a 2010 Academy Award for Best Animated Feature for Fantastic Mr. Fox. His films employ similar aesthetics, using a deliberate, methodical cinematography, with mostly primary colors. His soundtracks feature folk and early rock music, in particular classic British rock. Anderson's films combine dry humor with poignant portrayals of flawed characters – often a mix of the wealthy and the working class. He is also known for working with many of the same actors and crew on varying projects.

Wesley Wales Mortimer Anderson was born on May 1, 1969 in Houston, Texas.^[8] His father, Melver Anderson, ran an advertising and public relations company, and his mother, Texas Anne Burroughs, was an archaeologist who later became a real estate agent. Anderson grew up with his two brothers, Eric and Mel, but their parents divorced when Anderson was only eight. Anderson would later describe the divorce as "the most crucial event of my brothers and my growing up." This situation gave him the premise for The Royal Tenenbaums's story.^[9] As a child, the young Anderson directed many Super 8 movies starring himself and his brothers. He went to Westchester High School and St. John's School, a private school in Houston featured in Anderson's film Rushmore. There he wrote and directed many plays for the school's theater. After graduating from St. John's, Wes Anderson attended the University of Texas at Austin. There he met Owen Wilson, who became an essential writing partner and cast member in Anderson's filmography. Anderson and Wilson met during a playwriting class and became roommates. Then they worked on a script for a full-length movie called Bottle Rocket. Anderson earned his B.A. in philosophy in 1991 and released the short film version of Bottle Rocket in 1992. ^[10]

Anderson's films feature many of the same actors, crew members, and other collaborators. For example, the Wilson brothers (Owen, Luke, and Andrew), Bill Murray,^[11] Willem Dafoe, Seymour Cassel, Anjelica Huston, Jason Schwartzman, Kumar Pallana and son Dipak Pallana, Stephen Dignan and Brian Tenenbaum, and Eric Chase Anderson (Anderson's brother). Other frequent collaborators include writer Noah Baumbach (who co-wrote The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou and Fantastic Mr. Fox, with Anderson co-producing his film The Squid and the Whale), Owen Wilson (who co-wrote three of Anderson's feature films), cinematographer Robert Yeoman (A.S.C.), music supervisor Randall Poster, and composer Mark Mothersbaugh.

Anderson has acknowledged that he went to India to film his 2007 film The Darjeeling Limited partly as a tribute to the legendary Indian filmmaker Satyajit Ray, whose "films have also inspired all my other movies in different ways" (the film is dedicated to him).^[12] Jason Schwartzman reunited with Anderson for the The Darjeeling Limited, acting as well as co-writing the script with Anderson and Roman Coppola.^[13] In September 2006, following the disappointing commercial and critical reception of The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou, Steely Dan's Walter Becker and Donald Fagen released a tongue-in-cheek "letter of intervention" of Anderson's artistic "malaise." Proclaiming themselves to be fans of "World Cinema" and Anderson in particular, they offered Anderson their soundtrack services for his The Darjeeling Limited, including lyrics for a title track.^[14]

In 2008, Wes Anderson was hired to write the screenplay of the American adaptation of My Best Friend, a French film, for producer Brian Grazer, Anderson's first draft was titled "The Rosenthaler Suite". Anderson's stop-motion animation adaptation of the Roald Dahl book Fantastic Mr. Fox was released in 2009.

Filmmaker Martin Scorsese is an admirer of Anderson's, praising Bottle Rocket and Rushmore in an Esquire magazine article.^[15]

In September 2007, Wes Anderson oversaw a series of six commercials for AT&T: "College Kid", "Reporter", "Mom", "Architect", "Actor" and "Businessman." The campaign also includes online, print and outdoor advertising. These TV spots are part of AT&T's "Your Seamless World" national campaign from BBDO/New York. Each ad embodies Anderson's distinct style by focusing on a subject and having the environment around them change. Each of the six AT&T commercials introduces us to a different AT&T customer. As each of these people comes before the camera and talks about the different, far-reaching locales where he or she needs cell-phone service, the visuals behind the customer change dramatically to reflect the different destinations.

The "Reporter" piece was subject to controversy when several Lebanese-American groups protested its airing as ignorant given the complex and sensitive nature of the Lebanese political situation. The ad portrayed photojournalists dodging bullets on a Beirut rooftop while the city was being bombed. It was subsequently pulled from rotation after the assassination of Antoine Ghanem on September 19, 2007 with AT&T and BBDO issuing public apologies. ^[16]

Anderson starred in and directed an American Express "My Life, My Card" commercial, which chronicled the "filming" of an action movie starring Jason Schwartzman. Anderson acts as if he is being interviewed by someone from American Express for the ad, while walking around completing tasks on set, a scene paying homage to the movie Day for Night by François Truffaut. It was aired on television and in movie theaters in both a short and extended version, during and shortly after the theatrical release of The Life Aquatic.

In 2008, Wes Anderson teamed up with Brad Pitt for a commercial for Japanese cell phone company SoftBank, filmed in one continuous shot in a French seaside town. The commercial takes inspiration from Jacques Tati's Les Vacances de Monsieur Hulot.

DragonForce is an English power metal band from London. Formed in 1999, the group is known for its long and fast guitar solos, fantasy-based lyrics, and electronic sounds in their music to add to their retro video game-influenced sound. Guitarists Herman Li and Sam Totman are the only two remaining founding members in the group since ZP Theart's departure. Marc Hudson was announced as Theart's replacement in March 2011.^[1] A new studio album, The Power Within, was released on 15 April 2012.

Formation[link]

DragonForce was founded in 1999 by guitarists Herman Li and Sam Totman under the name of DragonHeart. The two later found singer ZP Theart through an advert,^[2] and soon after acquired drummer Matej Setinc, bassist Steve Scott and keyboardist Steve Williams. Totman and Li had a former musical ensemble experience in the band Demoniac. DragonHeart then released a demo, toured with Halford, Stratovarius and headlined their own shows under that name. The band later found that another power metal band with this same name already existed and renamed to DragonForce in 2002.

Drummer Matej Setinc left the band in December 1999 to continue his studies in Slovenia, he was replaced by Didier Almouzni. The band parted ways with Steve Williams in early 2000, and Steve Scott in November 2000. Williams later rejoined and left once again in December 2000, days ahead of the band's tour with Halford and Stratovarius. Steve Scott went on to join Shadowkeep, then Power Quest.

Bassist Diccon Harper joined the band in November 2000 with keyboardist Vadim Pruzhanov joining in February 2001 to complete the lineup for recording their first album.

Harper performed on DragonForce's debut album, Valley of the Damned in its completion, but left the band in 2002 because of a tendon problem that required surgery.^[3]

[edit] Valley of the Damned (2000–2003)

DragonForce recorded their first demo in 2000. It was an independent release, however it was enough to make them one of the most popular independent power metal bands in the UK at that time. Their song "Valley of the Damned" was released as their first single shortly after they changed their name permanently to DragonForce. A promotional video featuring live footage from their tour around Europe was released along with the song. The song was also a huge success on MP3.com where it charted at No. 1 for 2 weeks as the most downloaded song. Shortly after the demo was released keyboardist Steve Williams and bassist Steve Scott both left the band and were replaced with Ukrainian born Vadim Pruzhanov on keyboard and British born Diccon Harper on bass. Steve Williams later went on to form power metal band Power Quest.

In 2003, the band signed to Noise Records and began recording their debut full-length album, Valley of the Damned. The title track, re-released in promotion of the album, it is one of the most known DragonForce songs to date and is a staple of their live performance to this day. The band's tour for Valley of the Damned lasted until 2004, with the tour ending in Tokyo, Japan.

[edit] Sonic Firestorm (2004–2005)

The band's follow-up album, Sonic Firestorm, proved to be even more successful with the lead single "Fury of the Storm". Sonic Firestorm was the first DragonForce album featuring Adrian Lambert on bass and Dave Mackintosh on drums. When Mackintosh entered the band in 2004, they began referring to their style of music as "extreme power metal" due to his fast blastbeats and double bass rhythms. It was around this time that the band began becoming popular internationally and adopted nicknames such as "Bon Jovi on speed" and "Journey meets Slayer."

The tour was much longer than the band's recent tour for "Valley of the Damned" and featured many more headline shows than the previous. The band toured with many well-known metal bands such as W.A.S.P. and Iron Maiden. On the album they also added a video commentary to talk about Sonic Firestorm.

[edit] Inhuman Rampage (2006–2007)

DragonForce underwent various lineup changes before settling with the six current members. The band was introduced to the mainstream with their third album Inhuman Rampage, released in 2006 after signing with Roadrunner Records in UK, USA, Canada, France and Australia. The song "Through the Fire and Flames" is one of their most famous songs and is featured on the games Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock, Guitar Hero: Smash Hits Brutal Legend and as downloadable content for the Rock Band franchise. Lindsay Dawson of Herman Li and Sam Totman's former band, Demoniac, appeared as backup vocalist for this album. Before the release of the album, bassist, Adrian Lambert, left the group to raise his newborn son in November 2005. He was replaced with Frédéric Leclercq for the remaining of the Sonic Firestorm Tour. Frederic later became an official member of the band in January 2006. He was also featured in the band's music video for their second single off Inhuman Rampage, Operation Ground and Pound. Inhuman Rampage is a common favourite among DragonForce fans due to its heaviness and complexity. The 'Through the Fire and Flames' single reached gold disc status in USA and Canada.

[edit] Ultra Beatdown (2007–2008)

The band toured with Disturbed and Slipknot throughout the summer of 2008 on the Rockstar Energy Metal Mayhem Festival. The band returned in the Fall with the release of their 4th studio album, Ultra Beatdown. The first track and first single, "Heroes of Our Time", was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Metal Performance on 3 December 2008, losing out to Metallica with their song "My Apocalypse".^[4] A short version of "Heroes Of Our Time" is also featured in the video games Skate 2^[5] and the full version in NHL 10.^[6]

On 22 January 2009, the music video for their song "The Last Journey Home" was released to the Xbox Live Community a week before it was released online.^[7]

DragonForce carried out the Ultra Beatdown tour in Latin America, North America and Europe. They were supposed to play in Latin America in May 2009,^[8] but the tour was postponed to late 2009 due to outbreak of the Swine Flu.^[9] They performed at the Two Days a Week Festival in Weisen, Austria on 4 September.^[9] Then, they performed in several cities of Canada and United States from 15 September to 11 October, with special guests Sonata Arctica and Taking Dawn.^[9] The next tour was in Germany, from 16 to 30 October, followed by a single live performance in Luxembourg on 31 October.^[9] Then, they went to Latin America to perform in Curitiba, Porto Alegre, São Paulo, Mexico City, Santiago, Buenos Aires and Bogotá from 6 to 14 November.^[9] The final part of the tour was carried entirely in the United Kingdom, from 19 November to 12 December^[9]

Departure of ZP Theart (2010)[link]

Herman Li stated that DragonForce would stop touring in December, spend time at home for Christmas, and then will begin writing and recording a new studio album scheduled to be released in 2011.^{[dated info][10]}

On 22 February 2010, the band re-released their first two albums, Valley of the Damned and Sonic Firestorm. Valley of the Damned included newly remixed and remastered tracks while both albums included bonus tracks, updated packaging and DVDs featuring live footage, commentary, and more. Both albums were also released in a box set which featured a T-shirt, a card of guitar picks, and an inflatable guitar.

On 8 March 2010, it was announced via Roadrunner that DragonForce had parted ways with vocalist ZP Theart and would now be seeking a new frontman.^[11] Herman Li stated:

This story was removed the same day, but officially confirmed by the band a day later in a press statement that also contained a link to request an audition.^[12]

Twilight Dementia[link]

The band released their first live album on 13 September 2010 in Europe and 14 September 2010 for US and Canada. It is a double-disc set entitled Twilight Dementia. The album art, title, and release date were revealed on the band's official website on 22 June 2010. The performances were recorded on the final leg of the Ultra Beatdown World Tour.^[13] Regarding the album, guitarist Herman Li stated:^[13]

The band has been working on a new album since early 2010, recording in various studios in California, London, England and the South of France.

The band confirmed that they would be the opening act for Iron Maiden in two UK shows in August. The first at Odyssey Arena in Belfast on 3 August 2011 and the second at The O₂ Arena in London on 5 August 2011.

New vocalist Marc Hudson (2010–2011)[link]

On 2 March 2011, DragonForce announced their new singer, Marc Hudson.^[14][15] He used to play in a band, but wasn't a professional musician before joining Dragonforce. On his first shows with the band, Dragonforce was opening for Iron Maiden^[16]. On the shows opening for Iron Maiden they started performing a new song called "Cry Thunder".^{[citation needed]}

Pythia's vocalist Emily Ovenden will guest as backing vocals for DragonForce's new album which is scheduled for release on 15 April 2012.^[17] During the North American warm up shows, DragonForce performed a new song called "Fallen World", along with "Cry Thunder".^[18] According to the band, "Fallen World" is the fastest, most intense DragonForce song to date.^[18] The completion of this new album was announced on 14 January 2012. On 2 February, DragonForce announced via their official web-page that their new ten-track album would be entitled The Power Within. The album was released worldwide on 15 April 2012 via the band’s own Electric Generation Recordings, distributed by Essential Music (UK), Roadrunner Records (North America), 3Wise (Australia) and JVC Victor (Japan). In March 2012 DragonForce announced North American headlining tour for April and May.^[19]

Musical style[link]

The band have frequently referred to their style as power metal. Herman Li commented on descriptions of the band's style in an interview with Guitar World: "'Nintendo metal', 'extreme power metal', 'Bon Jovi on speed', 'Journey meets Slayer', ... people are always coming up with weird labels for us."^[20] The band has sometimes been labeled as a speed metal band.^[21][22][23]

Controversy[link]

Controversy for DragonForce occurred in late 2006 shortly after the Inhuman Rampage tour gained larger audiences in later cities. The band had many technical difficulties with the guitars, which is deemed to be the most "stand-out feature" in their music. The band also drop-tuned their instruments to E-flat tuning on that tour. This, coupled with low-quality recordings of the live performances that were subsequently uploaded to the Internet, created rumors of the band speeding up their music in-studio due to being unable to perform it live at such speeds. The band dispelled these rumors in subsequent tours, performing their solos at the same speed as on the albums. Herman Li stated, "Graspop Metal Meeting of 2006 was [a] total disaster. Eddie Trunk (born August 8, 1964) is an American music historian, radio personality, talk show host, and author best known as the host of several hard rock and heavy metal themed radio and television shows.

Trunk's current work includes the nationally syndicated radio show Eddie Trunk Rocks, which is recorded at the New York radio station Q104.3 (WAXQ) FM.^[1] Trunk also hosts Trunk Nation on the Sirius XM Radio channel Hair Nation (Channel 39) (formerly Eddie Trunk Live on The Boneyard)^[2] and is a music host and interviewer for the MSG Network, a cable network based out of New York City.^[3] Trunk is also the host of That Metal Show, which airs weekly on VH1 Classic.^[4]

Trunk had hosted "Friday Night Rocks" and "Saturday Night Rocks" for WNEW-FM in New York City until the radio station underwent a format change in 2003. He was also a regular disc jockey on Q104.3 before joining WNEW-FM and was a VJ who hosted the weekend episodes of Metal Mania on the cable television channel VH1 Classic.^[3]

He had also hosted a weekly Saturday four hour program on XM Radio's Ozzy's Boneyard Channel. Trunk was suspended after an interview with New York Mets catcher Mike Piazza. In that interview, Piazza was critical of XM Radio's programming on the Boneyard Channel 1. Trunk was not heard on XM again until late November 2006 when he appeared on the Ron and Fez show to announce his return to XM. He began hosting Eddie Trunk Live on the Boneyard beginning the first week in December 2006.

In May 2006, Guns N' Roses lead singer Axl Rose made a surprise visit on Eddie Trunk's Q104.3 radio show. Rose walked in unexpectedly to Trunk's radio studio in New York and spent two and a half hours live on the air with Trunk and other guests.^[5]

Eddie Trunk was born on August 8, 1964 in New Jersey.^[3] He grew up in Madison, New Jersey, where he attended Madison High School.^[6] As a teenager, he became obsessed with Kiss, Raspberries, and other bands including Aerosmith, Rush, UFO and Black Sabbath. Eddie has stated that he has never cared about which bands are "cool" and endured teasings for listening to Kiss during the 80s when they fell out of fashion. During high school, he began to write reviews of records for school credit and soon found his passion in music.

Trunk's first exposure to radio was when he learned about a local college radio station that would allow high school students to work there during the summer while the college kids were at home. He volunteered but the program was scrapped because of security concerns but the idea that he could make a living in radio remained. Eddie then attended a local community college but dropped out because he decided that it was not for him. He did get a job at a record store right across the street from WDHA-FM, his favorite New Jersey radio station. There he got to know many of the DJs and other radio station employees and would often consult him on which hard rock/heavy metal songs to play though the Program Director resisted this.

From a friend, Trunk learned of a pirate radio station that was illegally broadcasting from someone's basement. Trunk went over and played a few records and did a few shows. He made some tapes that were not all that impressive and showed them to WDHA. His enthusiasm along with the increased popularity of the metal genre earned him an invitation to "hang out" at WDHA. After about of year of working at the station as an unpaid intern, he finally convinced management to do a hardrock/metal specialty show. For ten years he worked part time and eventually hosted, produced and programmed it.

Around 1986, Trunk became an employee of Megaforce Records which had signed both Metallica and Anthrax. He became Vice President of the company at 25 years old. During that time he earned executive producer credit on some works from the following bands: Anthrax, Raven, TT Quick, Manowar, Overkill, King's X, Prophet, Icon and Ace Frehley. In fact, Eddie was the main driving force behind reviving Ace Frehley's career, convincing Megaforce Records head Jon "Jonny Z" Zazula to sign Ace to a solo deal.

In 1994, Trunk devoted himself to radio full time and was hired by a radio station called Pure Rock Q104.3 in New York. He wanted to do a metal show but was not permitted to do so because there were rumors that the station was going to be sold. These rumors proved true and the station was sold a year into Trunk's career there. During the last shift of the station, Trunk abandoned the playlist and played requests. Phone lines were jammed and the last show was a great success, but many thought that it would be the end as Pure Rock Q104.3 became Classic Q104.3. Quite the opposite was true, the new management were so impressed that they allowed Eddie to stay. He spent two years there and became incredibly popular.

Around 1997, WNEW FM was looking to become a more "heavy" station and move away from their classic rock playlist. Trunk was one of the first hired because of his experience and willingness to be a team player. He immediately wanted to do a metal show like the one he had with WDHA and eventually Saturday Night Rocks was born. Then WNEW made a drastic change into talk radio and Eddie's show was one of the few retained. Eddie Trunk was able to program his own show after the format flipped and was the only music show on an all talk radio station that featured the Opie and Anthony and Ron and Fez shows. WNEW made a format flip in the early morning hours of January 27, 2003 to a soft-rock station, firing all on-air talent.
