Sri Lanka Six hundred Police Officers who sacrificed their lives to the LTTE commemorated today
Six hundred Police Officers commemorated
June 11, 2011 Programmes were launched throughout the country to commemorate the 600 police officers who sacrificed their lives to the bullets of brutal terrorists in the East.
The police officers had to sacrifice their lives due to an order issued by the then political authority due to the pressure brought by the LTTE terrorists by taking cover behind the screen of peace. While peace talks were being held with the Government, the terrorists surrounded the Police Stations in the East including Batticaloa, Kalmunai, Valachchenai, Kalawanchikudi, Eravur and Akkaraipattu. All police officers in those police stations were ordered to surrender to the LTTE on the instructions of President Ranasinghe Premadasa. The gagged and blindfolded police officers were made to stand in line before the brutal LTTE terrorists opened fire on them. This unfortunate political decision made without thinking of the country cost the lives of the innocent police officers although this act did not usher in peace. People's leader Mahinda Rajapaksa who came into power after some time strengthened the security forces and established peace in the country. Police officers in all police stations throughout the country commemorated the past heroes by observing a two minutes silence this morning. Religious observances were held in all areas in commemoration. Although the relatives of these heroic officers shed tears today, the functions marked the dignity achieved by the victory that will not permit the future generations to meet the same fate.

The LTTE has frequently used suicide bombers as a tactic. They pioneered the use of concealed suicide bomb vests,[105]. The tactic of deploying suicide bombers was used to assassinate Rajiv Gandhi, who was killed in 1991 using a prototype suicide vest, and Ranasinghe Premadasa, assassinated in 1993.[87]
According to Jane's Information Group, between 1980 and 2000, the LTTE carried out a total of 168 suicide attacks on civilians and military targets.[87]
