The Suffolk County Jail on Nashua Street opened in 1990 and is the replacement facility for the historical Charles Street Jail,
which operated from 1851 until 1991. The Jail houses approximately 700 pretrial detainees in 13 different housing units.
The Suffolk County Jail has been accredited by the American Correctional Association since 1991 and has been reaccredited most
recently at the end of 2000 for a three-year term.
Transportation, booking and property also maintain effective operations of the facility with the constant
movement of probation surrender inmates to a separate housing unit at the House of Correction. This move was
necessary to combat the rising inmate population at the Jail. Annually, the kitchen staff serve more than 700,000 meals to detainees.
The staff also takes time to prepare separate meals for days honoring different ethnic, religious, and cultural holidays.
The Jail continues to use the latest in correctional technology to maintain safe and secure housing units for pretrial detainees. Along with the House of Correction, the Jail is fully compliant with all health and safety codes including the Americans with Disabilities Act. The command staff, along with all Jail employees continue to maintain a modern facility for the care and custody of detainees.

The Estrella Jail was built in 1991, and is podular/dormitory in design.
There are approximately 1,000 inmates housed at the Estrella Jail.
Each housing area contains general-purpose day rooms, and bathroom/shower areas.
There are outside areas for recreation. The Estrella Jail has a fully staffed and equipped medical clinic,
a non-denominational chapel area for religious services, and three education classrooms where inmates can attend educational,
drug rehabilitation classes such as ALPHA, or life-skills classes.
The visitation area of Estrella jail is similar to that of the Maricopa County Durango and Towers Jails,
in that, friends and family members are allowed to sit at a table with the inmate during the visit.
However, there is no touching allowed. In some circumstances, because of the security risk of the inmate,
jail visits are conducted in small rooms with wire-mesh separating the inmate from their friend or family member.
It is very important not to talk about the facts and circumstances of the case while visiting an inmate at the Maricopa County
Estrella Jail because the conversations are not private. Additionally, all phone calls from inmates are recorded and can be used against
the inmates by the prosecutors and law enforcement officers.

Holman Correctional Facility is an Alabama Department of Corrections prison located in Atmore, Alabama. Holman maintains 630 general population beds, 200 single cells, and 168 death row cells for a capacity of 998 maximum through minimum custody inmates to include a large contingency of life without parole inmates. The death chamber is located at Holman where all executions are conducted. Holman also operates two major correctional industries within the facility's perimeter, a license plate plant and a metal fabrication plant.
Opened during December 1969, with a basic capacity for 520 medium-custody inmates including a death row cellblock with a capacity of 20. It was constructed for $5,000,000 during the administration of Governor of Alabama Lurleen Wallace and Alabama Department of Corrections Commissioner James T. Hagen. The prisoners of the old Kilby Prison were moved to Holman Prison. It was named in honor of a former warden, William C. Holman.
On Friday August 29, 1975, two U.S. district court federal judges, William Brevard Hand and Frank M. Johnson Jr., prevented Alabama authorities from sending any more prisoners to Holman, Fountain Correctional Facility, Draper Correctional Facility, and the Medical and Diagnostic Center, due to overcrowding; the four prisons, designed to hold 2,212 prisoners, were holding about 3,800.
Since Holman opened, it gained a reputation for being the most violent prison in Alabama. Staff and prisoners stated that after Grantt Culliver became the warden, violence decreased. The area where Holman resides often has 100 degree heat during the summertime. The prison administration cannot afford to install air conditioning, so the prison has hundreds of industrial fans to cool the prison. The hottest areas in the prison are the kitchen facilities.
As of 2006, Holman, with a capacity of 500 prisoners, houses 1,000; During the same year, nearly 70% of the prisoners at Holman are African-American.
Notable prisoners:
Death row
Henry Hays - Perpetrator of the murder of Michael Donald - Alabama Institutional Serial #Z443 - Executed on June 6, 1997
Walter Leroy Moody, murderer of Robert Smith Vance - Alabama Institutional Serial #00Z613
Daniel Lee Siebert - Alabama Institutional Serial #00Z475 - Died from cancer while in custody in 2008
Non-death row
Bobby Frank Cherry - Perpetrator of the 16th Street Baptist Church bombing. On Wednesday October 13, 2004, Cherry was transferred from Holman Prison to Atmore Community Hospital in Atmore.

Orange was one of 51 county prisons for which the state assumed responsibility with the passage of the Conner bill in 1931. It was one of 61 field unit prisons renovated or built during the late 1930's to house inmates who worked building roads.
The prison originally housed medium custody inmates and was converted to a minimum security unit in 1966.
Orange was one of the 49 prisons in the Small vs. Martin federal lawsuit brought by inmates in 1985. The class action lawsuit resulted in a settlement agreement that required elimination of triple bunking and limited the number of inmates that could be imprisoned there.
The General Assembly provided two 50-bed dormitories for Orange in the $28.5 million Emergency Prison Facilities Development program authorized in 1987. The dormitory and a multipurpose building were ready when additional inmates arrived in July 1988.
The prison's original dormitory is still in use. A segregation building was converted into a chaplain's office and a library building was renovated for medical and office space.
The OCSD Custody Operations Division operates four jails:
Central Men's Jail and Women's Jail - The Central Jail Complex, opened in 1968, is located next to the department offices in Santa Ana. It houses approximately 2,664 inmates.
Intake Release Center ("IRC") - In 1988 as a part of the Central Jail Complex, the Intake Release Center was built to facilitate the intake and processing of inmates, and the including medical screening, booking, properidentification, and transfers between facilities. While it is a transitional facility, it also holds male and female inmates for brief periods.
Theo Lacy Facility - The TLF, located in the city of Orange, was originally built in 1960. A major expansion completed in 2006 brought its capacity to 3,100 inmates, making it the largest jail in the county.
James A. Musick Facility - A minimum security facility located on unincorporated county land near Lake Forest and Irvine, "The Farm" provides custodial and rehabilitative programs for 1256 adult male and female inmates.

Supermax (short for "super-maximum security") is the name used to describe "control-unit" prisons, or units within prisons, which represent the most secure levels of custody in the prison systems of certain countries. The objective is to provide long term, segregated housing for inmates classified as the highest security risks in the prison system — the "worst of the worst" criminals, and those who pose a threat to national and international security.
