Julie Fowlis (born 1979) is a Scottish folk singer and multi-instrumentalist who sings primarily in Scottish Gaelic.^[1]

Fowlis grew up in North Uist, an island in the Outer Hebrides, in a Gaelic-speaking community. She and has been involved in singing, piping and dancing since she was a child.^[1][2]

She is a member of the Scottish sextet, Dòchas,^[3] who were voted winners of Best Newcomer award at the Scots Trad Music Awards in 2004, where Fowlis herself was nominated for the Best Gaelic Singer award. In 2005, Fowlis released her first solo album Mar a Tha Mo Chridhe (As My Heart Is). The album was produced by Iain MacDonald and Fowlis and instantly gained her worldwide acclaim. It was the busiest year until then in her career, with the release of a new album with Dòchas as well. Fowlis has travelled worldwide with the group and as a solo artist with her own live band.

Her second solo album Cuilidh was released in March 2007, becoming a worldwide top-seller in the Traditional and World Music charts.^[4][5] Her album is a collection of songs from her native North Uist home. Her husband, Éamon Doorley plays bouzouki on the album and is a member of Irish traditional group Danú.

Fowlis won the Horizon award at the 2006 BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards,^[3] won Folk Singer of The Year at the 2008 awards^[2] and was nominated for the Folk Singer of the Year award at the 2007 awards.^[6] She appeared on Later With Jools Holland on BBC Two on May 25, 2007, and performed Hùg air Bhonaid Mhòir on the show. Notable fans of Fowlis include Björk, Ricky Gervais and Radiohead's Phil Selway.^[3]

In 2008, Julie recorded an album with long-time friends and collaborators Muireann Nic Amhlaoibh, Ross Martin and husband Éamonn Doorley. The album, entitled 'Dual' was released in October 2008, under Fowlis' 'Machair Records'. Fowlis also toured extensively around Scotland, Ireland, central Europe and America and launched both her solo albums while on tour. Fowlis recorded a version of the Beatles' 'Blackbird' for Mojo Magazine to celebrate the anniversary of The Beatles' 'The White Album'. The song, performed in Scottish Gaelic was released as a download single from Fowlis' own website in October 2008.

On 24 April 2009 through her online mailing list, Fowlis announced that she would begin recording her third studio album in May and that she would preview tracks from the project on her May 2009 tour of England. On 10 August 2009, she announced the album's title, Uam' (Scottish Gaelic for 'From Me'). In Europe the album was subsequently released 26 October the same year.

In 2012, Fowlis will be contributing songs to the upcoming Pixar film Brave.^[7]

In 2008, following guest spots on the BBC Radio Scotland's flagship traditional music programme Travelling Folk and the world music show Global Gathering, Julie started presenting a regular Thursday night Folk music programme, Fowlis and Folk^[8] and is a regular presenter on BBC Alba. She co-presented the 2012 Radio 2 Folk Awards with Mike Harding.^[9]

Everybody Hates Chris is an American television period sitcom inspired by the teenage experiences of comedian Chris Rock (who is also the narrator), while growing up in the Bedford-Stuyvesant neighborhood of Brooklyn, New York (often referred to in the show as Bed-Stuy). The show is set from 1982 to 1987; however, Rock himself was a teenager during years 1978-1983. Chris Rock grew up with a boy named Kenny Montero whom he has often referred to as the inspiration for a lot of the episodes. In many interviews, Rock has described Kenny as the reason he got into comedy in the first place. The title of the show parodies the CBS sitcom Everybody Loves Raymond. Rock stated "Everybody Loves Raymond but Everybody Hates Chris!". The show's lead actors are Terry Crews, Tichina Arnold, Tequan Richmond, Imani Hakim, Vincent Martella and Tyler James Williams.

In fall 2008, the The CW moved Everybody Hates Chris and The Game to the Friday night death slot. The fourth season of the series premiered Friday, October 3, 2008, at 8:00PM Eastern/7:00PM Central. On May 21, 2009, The CW announced that it had cancelled Everybody Hates Chris.^[1] Prior to this, executive producer Chris Rock announced that the end of season 4 matched up with his own past—dropping out of high school to become a comedian—and that it was time to end the show.^[2]

Plot summary[link]

Chris, a teenage boy living in the 1980s, finds himself being repeatedly rejected and bullied by all of his fellow schoolmates because of being black except for a rather nerdy boy and fellow unpopular student named Greg. At home, Chris's life is not any easier, with a cheap father named Julius, a boisterous, loud, and paranoid mother named Rochelle, an attractive, lucky, and popular brother named Drew, and an overindulged, whiny sister named Tanya.

Series finale[link]

The fourth and final season concluded with a series finale titled "Everybody Hates the G.E.D.", which focused on Chris getting his G.E.D. after he decides to drop out of school due to having to repeat the tenth grade for being late 30 times. His parents oppose at first, but they later decide to support and love him regardless. The entire Rock family was in a diner with Chris's G.E.D results, and as soon as they were about to announce his results, the screen went black.

The American Film Institute selected Everybody Hates Chris as one of the best 10 television series of 2007, stating that the show "provides a very real look at growing up in America — a challenge that demands a discussion of race and class often absent from television today."^[3] Common Sense Media's Marjorie Kase and Shanel Walker & Emily Kofoed gave the show 4 stars, and said it was "a prime example of how to take serious issues and approach them in a humorous yet thought-provoking way. The series is innovative, funny, and stereotype-defying -- enjoyable for teens and their parents." Marjorie, however, did warn parents that there are "jokes about drugs (becoming a "crackhead") and the "N" word has been used sparingly. There's also some mild kissing and jokes about teen pregnancy."^[4]

Everybody Hates Chris won a NAACP Image Award for its writing in 2008. It has also been nominated for many Golden Globe and Emmy Awards. In December 2008, Entertainment Weekly lists the Kwanzaa episode from this show as seventh on the magazine's "Must List: 10 Holiday Things We Love."^[5]

The show airs regularly on broadcast TV during the week. The show was launched on September 7, 2009 on Nick at Nite, becoming the youngest syndicated show on the channel, beating George Lopez. The series has since expanded from Nick at Nite, and has joined sister network, TeenNick, with the first run from July 18, 2011 to August 15, 2011. It currently airs on TeenNick weekdays in the 10PM EST hour. The show also airs weekdays on BET and The CW.
