Luc Rombouts - Entertainer Rag (on KUL Library Carillon)
The library of the Catholic University of Leuven, founded in 1425, was located inside the university halls, and was enlarged in 1725 in a baroque style. In 1914, during World War I, Leuven was plundered by German troops, and a large part of the city was set fire to, effectively destroying about half of the city. The library was lost, as well as about 300000 books, and a huge collection of manuscripts. The University Library was rebuilt by the American architect Whitney Warren. The tower houses one of the largest carillons in the world. Warren took particular pride in his design of the reconstructed library at the Catholic University of Leuven, finished in 1928, which carried the controversial inscription 'Furore Teutonico Diruta: Dono Americano Restituta' ("Destroyed by German fury, restored by American generosity") on the facade. The library was largely destroyed by German forces again in 1940. Here you see the 'beiaard' Luc Rombouts playing Scott Joplin's 'Entertainer Rag' on the carillon. The video is made yesterday, 6th of May, 2008.

University Hospital Gasthuisberg, Leuven
University Hospital Gasthuisberg is the largest hospital of the academic hospitals associated with the Catholic University of Leuven. It is located on the outskirts of town, just 4 km from the railway station (with bus services every 10 minutes). Since it has been built on sloping terrain, the complex is easily visible from a distance. The hospital consists of various low-rise buildings, and an astoundingly large (and never large enough) parking lot. Even patients of the hospital have to pay for their parking lot. Not exactly an architectural achievement, but medical services here undoubtedly are among the best in Belgium (and the world for that matter). More : www.discoverleuven.com
