EAPS in Brief: Geology Professor Oliver Jagoutz
Oliver Jagoutz is an Assistant Professor of Geology concerned with the origin and evolution of the lithosphere. Favoring addressing scientific questions by a multidisciplinary approach, his research includes field work, petrology, isotope geochemistry, structural geology, and major and trace element geochemistry. Particular interests include field studies on magmatic processes, magmatic accretion of continental crust in subduction zones, oceanic crust evolution, and formation and evolution of the ocean-continent transition zone. Before coming to MIT, Jagoutz studied Chemistry and Geology at the University of Mainz and as an Erasums student at ETH Zurich. After graduating in Geology (2000) he began a PhD with J.P. Burg at ETH Zurich. On completion of his Ph.D. in 2004 Jagoutz worked as a postdoc with Othmar Müntener at the University of Bern. He joined the faculty in 2008. Field work is central to Jagoutz's research: He usually spends around three to four months a year in the field and has extensive field experience in Greece, Zimbabwe, Switzerland, Italy, Pakistan, India, Mongolia, Morocco and the western US. Video credit: Helen Hill. Special thanks to MIT student B. Michini for use of his time-lapse "Green Building and Great Sail, MIT".- published: 16 Dec 2013

Jade Star Lackey: Zoned Crystals and the Pace of Earth Processes
In this lecture from October 2, 2013 -- Zoned Crystals and the Pace of Earth Processes -- Associate Professor of Geology Jade Star Lackey discusses case studies from the Sierra Nevada that showcase how to use the mineral zircon to reconstruct magma origins and mixing in the nascent Sierran Arc, and how the vigor and evolution of a CO2-producing hydrothermal system of the arc is archived by the semi-precious mineral garnet. Prof. Lackey has been with Pomona College since 2007, and his expertise includes igneous and metamorphic petrology, stable isotope geochemistry, and fluid flow in the crust.
