Moshe ben Maimon (Hebrew: משה בן מימון), or Mūsā ibn Maymūn (Arabic: موسى بن ميمون), acronymed Rambam (/ˈrɑːmbɑːm/; Hebrew: רמב״ם – for "Rabbeinu Moshe Ben Maimon", "Our Rabbi/Teacher Moses Son of Maimon"), and Latinized Moses Maimonides (/maɪˈmɒnɪdiːz/my-MON-i-deez), a preeminent medieval Sephardic Jewish philosopher and astronomer, became one of the most prolific and influential Torah scholars and physicians of the Middle Ages. Born in Cordova (present-day Spain), Almoravid Empire on Passover Eve, 1135 or 1138, he died in Egypt on December 12, 1204, whence his body was taken to the lower Galilee and buried in Tiberias. He worked as a rabbi, physician, and philosopher in Morocco and Egypt.
During his lifetime, most Jews greeted Maimonides's writings on Jewish law and ethics with acclaim and gratitude, even as far away as Iraq and Yemen, and although Maimonides rose to become the revered head of the Jewish community in Egypt, there were also vociferous critics of some of his writings, particularly in Spain. Nonetheless, he was posthumously acknowledged as among the foremost rabbinical arbiters and philosophers in Jewish history, and his copious work comprises a cornerstone of Jewish scholarship. His fourteen-volume Mishneh Torah still carries significant canonical authority as a codification of Talmudic law. In the Yeshiva world, he is called sometimes "ha Nesher ha Gadol" (the great eagle) in recognition of his outstanding status as a bona fide exponent of the Oral Torah.

Melvyn Bragg and guests discuss the life, times and legacy of the great Jewish medieval philsopher, Maimonides. Also known as Rambam, Maimonides was a philosopher, theologian, lawyer and physician whose works are still influential today. Melvyn is joined by Sir Anthony Kenny, philosopher and former Master of Balliol College, Oxford; Anne Hudson, Emeritus Professor of Medieval English at the University of Oxford; and Rob Lutton, Lecturer in Medieval History at the University of Nottingham.
Rabbi Moshe ben Maimon (1135-1204) was a towering figure in medieval Jewish history, and continues to cast a long shadow into the Jewish present. Nevertheless, the work of the philosopher-physician endured significant controversy, including an especially sad episode in which Jews actually consigned his works to the flames. Lecture delivered at Young Israel of Bal Harbour-Surfside.

http://JewishHistory.org The works of Maimonides did not receive universal approbation. There were many that disagreed with his philosophy and they disagreed with his use of philosophy to explain Torah. There were others who disagreed with his temerity in codifying the entire Torah. And, there were those that were small-minded and jealous of his success and influence. Because of this, during his lifetime, he was so great that they were afraid to attack him head on. But after his death, for the next 50 years there raged a tremendous battle between those that were pro-Maimonides and those that were anti-Maimonides. The anti-Maimonides people went to great lengths to discredit him. Finally, in their religious zeal, they informed the Catholic Church that Maimonides had written anti-Catholic, ...

This Old House
Today I passed by that old house
Where we used to stay
It does'nt look the same, no
Since we moved away
There were no kids playing outside
Waiting for the icecream truck to come by
And you're not there , no,
Waiting for me
It's not the same house, no
( same house )
It's not like it used to be
( not like it used to be )
It's not the same house, no
( same house )
It's not like it used to be
( not like it used to be )
I took a look inside
And it took me quite by surprise
When I found out they tore down our favourite room
Ohh, but the scent of your perfume
Was still in the air
Reminding me of us still being there
But baby you're not there
Waiting for me, no
It's not the same house, no
( same house )
It's not like it used to be
( not like it used to be )
It's not the same house, no, no
( same house )
It's not like it used to be, no
( not like it used to be )
( Interlude )
Same house
Not like it used to be
Same house
Not like it used to be
The kids room still looks the same
But there's not a toy insight
I even walked over to where their beds used to be
And I pretended to kiss them goodnight
Oooohhh
But tears came to my eyes
When I finally realise
That you were'nt there no, no
Waiting for me
It's not the same house, no
( same house )
It's not like it used to be
( not like it used to be )
No It's not the same house, no, no
( same house )
It's not like it used to be, no
( not like it used to be )
The grasses grown tall around the fence
It's not the same house, no
It's not like it used to be
It's not the same house, no
