The First Eighteen | Parsons The New School for Design
The First Eighteen was a showcase of work by the first graduating students of the new MFA in Fashion Design and Society at Parsons The New School for Design, a highly selective program for talented, emerging designers that was initiated through the support of alumna Donna Karan. In the exhibition, which was held in a raw space in New York's Garment District from May 15 -- 23, students presented their personal vision, with a focus on process and identity, through a body of work that encompassed highly executed, innovative clothing, film and other multimedia presentations. The MFA in Fashion Design and Society is studio-based and fosters experimentation, providing students with the design and research skills they need to become successful in the field, including a critical awareness for self-development and growth. The program is directed by Shelley Fox, an award-winning designer who has created innovative women's wear collections that have been exhibited in the US and internationally. Since the program's inception, students have showcased work internationally, receiving global recognition and awards through participation in select events and competitions. This includes representing the United States in the International Fashion Showcase during London Fashion Week (February 2012); two presentations focused on knitwear at Pitti Filati in Florence (July 2011); and placing as finalists and the winning design in a competition organized by the Met Costume Institute in connection ...

The Sui Life | Parsons The New School for Design
An Intimate Conversation with ANNA SUI and Andrew Bolton THE NEW SCHOOL | www.newschool.edu In a presentation brimming with vibrant reminiscence and a love of craft, top designer and Parson's alumna, Anna Sui, and Curator of the Costume Institute at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Andrew Bolton, took to the stage of Parson's Fashion Auditorium to discuss Bolton's recently authored book entitled "Anna Sui," a look into twenty-five years of the designer's successful career. Moderating the discussion was Parson's School of Fashion Dean, Simon Collins, who probed both speakers with questions concerning everything from the designer's experiences to perceptions on social media and globalization. Parsons The New School for Design | http Bolton, who describes Ms. Sui as a good storyteller, noted that Anna's creativity and fashion sense not only stems from her strong American cultural influences but also from her ability to pragmatically translate these influences into fashion. "I'm not as crazy as I thought," enthused the designer when referring to her design ethic. Throughout the discussion Ms. Sui expressed her perspective about the dynamic and unending process of fashion—noting that it is just as much about developing a craft as it is about understanding what people want and making your products relatable. MFA Fashion, Design and Society | Parsons The New School for Design
PARSONS THE NEW SCHOOL FOR DESIGN | www.newschool.edu MFA Fashion Design and Society at Parsons | newschool.edu/mfa-fds The MFA Fashion Design and Society at Parsons The New School for Design is the first graduate program of its kind in the United States. Both interdisciplinary and international in scope, this academy for advanced studies in fashion design will train a small cadre of world-class designers to have a global understanding of fashion. Innovative and progressive, Fashion Design and Society will offer students the opportunity to make substantive contributions—both professional and conceptual—to the field of fashion design. The program was initiated with the support of Parsons alumna Donna Karan, whose own career reflects a broad view of fashion that has transformed the field. Aiming to bridge the gap between industry and education, the MFA Fashion Design and Society program reframes fashion design education within the context of the global political economy. Students learn to consider design, production, and distribution cycles as well as social, critical, and ecological dimensions of fashion in self-directed projects supported by the fashion industry.
