The Colony Experiment
Tuesdays @ 10pm E/P on Discovery
New to The Colony? Watch how the Colonists build back:
http://dsc.discovery.com/videos/colony-building-their-way-back/?smid=YTDSC-YTD-PLP
What would you do in the wake of a global catastrophe? How would you find food? Water? Shelter?
The Colony is a controlled experiment to see exactly what it would take to survive and rebuild under these circumstances. For 10 weeks, a group of 10 volunteers, whose backgrounds and expertise represent a cross-section of modern society, are isolated in an urban environment outside Los Angeles and tasked with creating a livable society.
With no electricity from the grid, no running water and no communication with the outside world, all the volunteers have to work with are their skills and whatever tools and supplies they can scavenge from their surroundings.
Experts from the fields of homeland security, engineering and psychology have helped design the world of The Colony to reflect elements from both real-life disasters and models of what the future could look like after a global viral outbreak.
Over the course of the 10-week experiment, the Colonists must work together to build the necessities of survival, such as a water-filtration system, a battery bank that powered their electricity, a solar cooker, a shower system and a greenhouse and even some niceties (a coffee maker!).
Tune in Tuesdays at 10 p.m. ET/PT to see who thrives and who fails to survive.

Damien Dempsey "colony"
I sing the song of the colony
How many years and you're still not free
And your mother cries and you ask god why
Greed is the knife and the scars run deep
How many races with much reason to weep
And your children cry
And you ask god why
Annie, she came from Dunlavin Town
The TB came and killed her family all around
Population booms
Eleven in two rooms
Katie she came from down Townsend street
Ten in a bed and no shoes on their feet
1916 came
They played the patriots game
Freddy, he came from the Iveagh flats
Tenement slums and infested with rats
Sleeping on damp straw
Trying not to break the law
Thomas, he came from Kilmaine in Mayo
Semi starvation was the only life you'd know
In a two room shack
Then jailed in Letterfrack
I look to the east, I look to the west
To the north and the south, and I'm not too impressed
Time after time
After crime after crime
They raped, robbed, pillaged, enslaved and murdered
Jesus Christ was their god and they done it in his name
So he could take the blame if it's not all a game
With bible in one hand and a sword in the other
They came to purify my land of my Gaelic Irish mothers
And fathers, and sisters and brothers
With our own ancient customs, laws, music, art
Way of life and culture
Tribal in structure
We had a civilisation
When they were still neanderthal nations
We suffer with the Native American, the Indian in Asia
Aboriginal Australia
The African people with their history so deep
And our children still weep and our lives are still cheap
You came from Germany, from France, from England
And from Spain
From Belgium and from Portugal
You all done much the same
You took what was not yours
Went against your own bible
You broke your own laws
Just to out do the rival
But did you ever apologize
For the hundreds and millions of lives
You destroyed and terrorised
Or have you never realized
Did you never feel shame
For what was done in your country's name
And find out who's to blame and why they were so inhumane
And still they teach you in your school
About those glorious days of rule
And how it's your destiny to be
Superior to me
But if you've any kind of mind
You'll see that all human kind
Are the children of this earth
And your hate for them will chew you up and spit you out
You'll never kill our will to be free, to be free
You'll never kill our will to be free, to be free
You'll never kill our will to be free, to be free
Inside our minds we hold, hold the key

JOY DIVISION - COLONY (Play Loud!)
One of my fave JD tracks; dark, industrial, troubled, intense and insistent. Ians' angst about his relationships, and the pressure of being in a very upcoming band are to the fore here!
It's grim up North!
Sing along with it!
A cry for help, a hint of anaesthesia
The sound from broken homes,
we used to meet always here
As he lays asleep she takes him in her arms
Some things I have to do
but I don't mean you harm
I wore a careless glance
and kissed her last goodbye
Hands in the bag she packed a tear
she tries to hide
Cruel wind that howls down
to our lunacy
And leaves him standing cold
here in this colony
I can't see why
all these confrontations
I can't see why
all these dislocations
No, family life just makes me feel
uneasy
Stood alone here in this colony
In this colony (4)
Yeah, God in his wisdom
took you by the hand,
God in his wisdom made you understand (4)
In this colony (4)

Professor Walter Tschinkel makes a Molten cast of an Ant Colony
Have you ever dreamed of shrinking yourself so you could go inside an ant colony and see exactly what they do in there? You may have owned an ant farm when you were a kid, but do ants really behave how they would normally within a clear plastic sheath only about 1 inch by 1 inch? Doubtfully. Playing with ants isn't just for kids as Florida State University professor Walter Tschinkel shows us in just a moment. Tschinkel replicates the form of ant colonies by pouring molten aluminum into the tunnels, letting the metal harden, and then meticulously excavating the result. NERDTREK.COM

The Hutterites - Hutterite Colony - Driven to Sustain
Those who know Hutterites know that they are very traditional people. It is, therefore, no surprise that they have firm political beliefs and very conservative views about the world around them. Most Hutterites do have a source of outside news, typically the local paper. Its how the colony interprets the news that is especially interesting. Most of the views of the Hutterites Ive spoke with about global issues are direct translations from the newspapers. The opinions of Obama were suspected terrorist; climate change doesnt exist because President Bush discredited humans involvement over 8 years ago. Translations like these happen frequently in the colonies, but very seldom does this source of global information affect their daily routine. Although thats unless a Hutterite catches an article on becoming more resource efficient in their lives and a Hutterites attention will be caught. You see, Hutterites are hardcore conservative in a lot of ways than just politically. They are by far the most efficient group of people I have ever witnessed. Its not because Hutterites are trying to save the world from climate change but because they put higher value in resources than the average person. Something I believe, western culture can learn from this amazing society.

Colony Collapse is filmed at sites of ecological friction, the fault lines of conflict between humanity and (the rest of) nature. It is a video made to confront and indict the ongoing catastrophes that are the very fabric of our globalized economic order. For examples we used....
Lapindo (Sidoarjo) Mud Disaster is an eruption of scalding mud and flammable vapors triggered by a gas drilling gone awry. It has buried more than a dozen villages and blocked a major highway, and is expected to keep expanding for the next 25 years. Lapindo is located close to the home town of the the director (Tooliq) and singer (Nova).
Below a freshly shattered dam on the shoulder of Merapi mountain. This required a meeting with an important Islamic mountain shaman, who wanted to know we weren't up to anything frivolous or disrespectful. After the vetting he sent his crew to guide and protect us, some men went upriver a few kilometers to warn us by mobile phone if a new flood was coming down.
Bantar Gebang is a landscape of trash. Garbage stretches farther than the eye can see. Mountains, rivers, and even villages where the trash-pickers live. Not something easy to summarize in words.
A supermarket nested in a mega-mall within a skyscraper. Air conditioning, shopping carts, muzak, just like any posh supermarket. But right outside is a the permanent traffic jam of Jakarta, a sprawling mega-city of at least 10 million.

Thanks to the many who graciously tolerated us filming in the midst of their crisis: be it a sea of toxic mud or just the daily commute. Extra thanks to those who hosted, drove, filmed or loaned gear. And of course it wouldn't have been possible to complete without all of you who contributed to the Kickstarter campaign.
