The Guard interview w/ Brendan Gleeson
[BlackTree TV - Los Angeles] Brendan Gleeson on Sgt. Gerry Boyle:
He's the last of the independents -- according to himself -- who has seen quite a lot of life, in the sense that not an awful lot has happened to him and he's had plenty of time to think about it. He's quite erudite and well-read. He listens to music and watches films, to quite a staggering degree, but you wouldn't know it from his general conversation, as he keeps it well hidden. He's a bit of a hard-bitten man, but as with a lot of cynics, there's an idealist hidden in there somewhere. His main flaws are that he's closed-up. He's a bit of a maverick and he does take the odd illegal substance -- just to try them out. He's quite stringent about integrity. He has a ferocious honesty and that does not allow him to consort with people who are fudging issues all over the place. But, at the same time, he's not a rigid stickler for the letter of the law, if it's nonsensical and not really in the human interest. He has no real time for it, which is a little bit of a disadvantage in a guardian of the peace. Or maybe not?
BRENDAN GLEESON (Sgt. Gerry Boyle), a Dublin-born former teacher, left the profession to
pursue a career in his first love, acting and joined the Irish theatre company Passion Machine.
He landed his first starring role in I Went Down, which was followed by his much acclaimed role
in John Boorman's The General. His performance gained him awards not only for Best Actor at
the 1998 Boston Society of Film Critics Awards and Best Actor at the 1998 ALFS, but also the
Best Actor award at the 1999 Irish Film & Television Awards.
Gleeson's rise to fame began when he appeared in Jim Sheridan's The Field, followed by a
number of small roles in such films as Far and Away and Into the West. He attracted the
attention of Hollywood when he starred as Hamish in the film Braveheart, alongside Mel
Gibson. Other notable screen credits include John Woo's Mission: Impossible II, Steven
Spielberg's A.I.: Artificial Intelligence; John Boorman's Tailor of Panama and Country of My
Skull; Danny Boyle's 28 Days Later; and Martin Scorsese's Gangs of New York.
Over the past few years Gleeson has become a household name after appearing in a number of successful films. His film credits include August Nicholson in M. Night Shyamalan's The Village; Cold Mountain directed by Anthony Minghella; Ridley Scott's Kingdom of Heaven;Breakfast on Pluto directed by Neil Jordan; Wolfgang Petersen's Troy; Black Irish directed by Brad Gann; Studs directed by Paul Mercier; Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire directed by Mike Newell; Harry Potter and the Order of Phoenix directed by David Yates; John Boorman's The Tiger's Tail; and the motion capture Beowulf directed by Robert Zemeckis.
He also appeared in In Bruges in 2009, under the direction of Martin McDonagh, alongside Colin Farrell and Ralph Fiennes. It was nominated for a Golden Globe® and a BAFTA Award for his role. His recent credits include Perrier's Bounty, directed by Ian Fitzgibbon for Parallel Films and Green Zone, a Paul Greengrass film with Matt Damon. He also returned to the role of Professor 'Mad-Eye' Moody in the seventh installment of the Harry Potter series, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1. He also won an Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Miniseries or Movie for his portrayal of Winston Churchill in HBO's Into the Storm directed by Thaddeus O'Sullivan. The film garnered fourteen Emmy nominations in total. A BlackTree Media Production Thank you for watching!

Wrath of the Titans interview with Ralph Feinnes
Perseus braves the treacherous underworld to rescue his father, Zeus, captured by his son, Ares, and brother Hades who unleash the ancient Titans upon the world.
RALPH FIENNES (Hades) recently completed his portrayal of the evil Lord Voldemort in "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows -- Part 2," the finale of the blockbuster film franchise. Fiennes had also played Voldemort in "Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire," "Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix" and "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows -- Part 1."
Upcoming, Fiennes stars in Mike Newell's screen adaptation of Charles Dickens' "Great Expectations," with Helena Bonham Carter and Jeremy Irvine, and in the highly anticipated "Skyfall," the next film in the Bond series, from director Sam Mendes. He recently made his feature film directorial debut with a contemporary version of Shakespeare's political thriller "Coriolanus," in which he also starred with Gerard Butler and Vanessa Redgrave. In 2010, Fiennes first played Hades in the hit "Clash of the Titans," with Liam Neeson and Sam Worthington.
Fiennes has been honored with two Academy Award® nominations, the first in 1994 for his performance in Steven Spielberg's Oscar®-winning Best Picture, "Schindler's List." Fiennes' chilling portrayal of Nazi Commandant Amon Goeth also brought him a Golden Globe nomination and a BAFTA Award, as well as Best Supporting Actor honors from numerous critics groups, including the National Society of Film Critics, and the New York, Chicago, Boston and London Film Critics associations. Four years later, Fiennes earned his second Oscar® nomination, for Best Actor, in another Best Picture winner, Anthony Minghella's "The English Patient." He also garnered Golden Globe and BAFTA Award nominations, as well as two Screen Actors Guild (SAG) Award® nominations, one for Best Actor and another shared with the film's ensemble cast.
In addition, Fiennes won a British Independent Film Award, an Evening Standard British Film Award and a London Film Critics' Circle Award and earned a BAFTA Award nomination for his work in the 2005 drama "The Constant Gardener," directed by Fernando Meirelles. In 2008, he received dual British Independent Film Award nominations, both for Best Supporting Actor, for his performances in "The Duchess," for which he also received a Golden Globe nomination, and "In Bruges." In addition, he earned Emmy, Golden Globe and SAG Award® nominations for his work in the HBO movie "Bernard and Doris," opposite Susan Sarandon.
His long list of film credits also includes the award-winning drama "The Reader," with Kate Winslet; Kathryn Bigelow's Oscar®-winning "The Hurt Locker"; James Ivory's "The White Countess"; Aardman's Oscar®-winning animated film "Wallace & Gromit in The Curse of the Were-Rabbit"; "Red Dragon"; the Neil Jordan-directed films "The End of the Affair" and "The Good Thief"; David Cronenberg's "Spider"; Martha Fiennes' "Chromophobia" and "Onegin"; István Szabó's "Sunshine"; "Maid in Manhattan"; the animated "The Prince of Egypt"; "The Avengers"; "Oscar and Lucinda"; Bigelow's "Strange Days"; Robert Redford's "Quiz Show"; and "Wuthering Heights," which marked his film debut.
A graduate of the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, Fiennes began his career on the London stage, including two seasons with the Royal Shakespeare Company (RSC). In 1995, Fiennes opened as Hamlet in Jonathan Kent's production of the Shakespeare play, winning a Tony Award when the production moved to Broadway. His subsequent theatre credits include "Ivanov," again under Kent's direction; the title roles of Shakespeare's "Richard II" and "Coriolanus"; Christopher Hampton's "The Talking Cure," in which he originated the role of Carl Jung; the title role in Ibsen's "Brand" at the RSC; and "Julius Caesar," playing Mark Anthony.
In 2006, he reunited with Jonathan Kent to star in Brian Friel's "Faith Healer," which opened in Dublin before moving to Broadway, where Fiennes earned a Tony nomination for his performance. In 2008, Fiennes starred in the West End debut of Yasmina Reza's play "God of Carnage." Later that year, he starred in Samuel Beckett's one-man show, "First Love," at New York's Lincoln Center, followed by Kent's production of "Oedipus," at the National Theatre in London. Fiennes returned to the West End in August 2011 to star in Shakespeare's "The Tempest," directed by Trevor Nunn.

MY OWN PRIVATE IDAHO (1991) "THE LEMMINGS"
My Own Private Idaho is a 1991 independent drama film written and directed by Gus Van Sant, loosely based on Shakespeare's Henry IV, Part 1, Henry IV, Part 2, and Henry V, and starring River Phoenix and Keanu Reeves. The story follows two friends, Mike and Scott, as they embark on a journey of personal discovery that takes them to Mike's hometown in Idaho and then to Italy in search of Mike's mother.
Van Sant originally wrote the screenplay in the 1970s, but discarded it after reading John Rechy's 1963 novel, City of Night, and concluding that Rechy's treatment of the subject of street hustlers was better than his own. Over the years, Van Sant rewrote the script, which comprised two stories: that of Mike and the search for his mother, and Scott's story as a modern update of the Henry IV plays. Van Sant had difficulty getting Hollywood financing, and at one point considered making the film on a minuscule budget with a cast of actual street kids. He sent copies of his script to Reeves and to Phoenix, assuming that they would turn it down, but both agreed to star in the film.
My Own Private Idaho had its premiere at the 1991 Venice Film Festival, and received largely positive reviews, from critics including Roger Ebert and those of The New York Times and Entertainment Weekly. The film was a moderate financial success, grossing over $6.4 million in North America, which was above its estimated budget of $2.5 million. Phoenix received several awards for his performance in the film, including the Volpi Cup for Best Actor at the 1991 Venice Film Festival, Best Male Lead from the Independent Spirit Awards, and Best Actor from the National Society of Film Critics.

Chinese Odyssey 2002 (coming to DVD October 6, 2009)
Winner of the Best Actress and Best Film Awards from the Hong Kong Film Critics Society, Jeffrey Lau's Chinese Odyssey 2002 is a unique martial arts comedy-romance that sends up Shakespeare, the Shaw Brothers, Beijing Opera, high-wire thrills, and even producer Wong Kar-Wai's signature stylistic excess.
A movie that "packs a lot of laughs and action into a beautifully shot 105 minutes" (Variety), Chinese Odyssey follows royal heirs Princess Wushuang (Faye Wong) and future Emperor Zheng De (Chen Chang) as they escape the Forbidden City to taste life among Ming Dynasty China's have-nots.
But in a gender-bending twist, the princess disguises herself as a fierce male warrior who proves equally beguiling to both martial arts master King Bully (Tony Leung, cast hilariously against type) and his sister Phoenix (Wei Zhao).
When King Bully plays family match-maker, the foppish (and afro-wigged!) young emperor is forced to compete with his own sister for the beautiful commoner's hand.
Combining swordfights, slapstick, satire, songs, and genuine sentiment into a lightning-paced big-screen farrago of "identity changes and gender confusions; plot contortions, clever puns and a great punchline" (Time Out London), Chinese Odyssey 2002 may be the mother of all mo lei tau films - the crazy-quilt Hong Kong super-farces recently popularized in the West by Stephen Chow.

Amy Adams was honored by the Santa Barbara International Film Festival with their Cinema Vanguard Award. Adams, who is currently nominated for an Oscar for her role in "The Master," was selected for the award for her "fearless commitment to the craft." Director of "The Master," Paul Thomas Anderson presented her the trophy, after which Adams thanked the festival and the audience for the recognition. Bruce Willis was immortalized at Fox studios lot with a giant mural in honor of the 25th anniversary of the "Die Hard" movie franchise. The larger-than-life picture captures a scene from the original 1988 film. Willis' character, John McClane will be back in theaters on February 14 with the 5th installment: "A Good Day to Die Hard." The cast of "Cabaret" reunited in New York to celebrate the movie's 40th anniversary. Liza Minnelli, Michael York, Joel Grey and Marisa Berenson teamed up on the red carpet as cast mates and now old friends. "Cabaret" will be released as a special edition Blu-ray on February 5th. Finally, "30 Rock" character Liz Lemon, played by Tina Fey, bid farewell in a bittersweet "30 Rock" finale on Thursday (January 31). The finale was a slight departure from the show's usual light-hearted comedy, as the cast members showed real emotion during their last moments together.

THE COMMITMENT Trailer
"Emotional resonance, joy and heartbreak...indeed, this is a film that would be difficult to pull off if not for its tremendously talented cast."
—Richard Propes, The Independent Critic
"A fine dramatic film with some soft, almost deadpan comedic moments."
—Mark Bell, Film Threat
"While any description of this movie will sound trite and simple, there's nothing simple about this film. Filled with a depth of emotion, The Commitment is really a tale of love and what you'll go through for it."
—Brian Morton, Rogue Cinema

Dead Poets Society
Academy Award(R) winner Robin Williams (Best Supporting Actor, Good Will Hunting, 1997) delivers one of his most memorable performances in Dead Poets Society. For generations, Welton Academy students have been groomed to live lives of conformity and tradition - until new professor John Keating inspires them to think for themselves, live life to the fullest and "Carpe Diem." This unconventional approach awakens the spirits of the students, but draws the wrath of a disapproving faculty when an unexpected tragedy strikes the school. With unforgettable characters and beautiful cinematography, Dead Poets Society will captivate and inspire you time and time again.

Freedom Writers
Hilary Swank stars in this story about a teacher in a racially divided school who gives her students what they've always needed - a voice. Swank plays Erin Gruwell, the real-life teacher at Long Beach's Wilson High who inspired her students to overcome the gangs that divided them and the education system that forgot them. Based on the book The Freedom Writers Diary and supported by a cast of first-time actors who drew from their actual experiences on the street, Gruwell teaches us all an important lesson about tolerance and trust.

The Accused
What are the limits of justice? Of social responsibility? The Accused takes a powerful and thought-provoking look at human nature and individual moral conscience, and a judicial process that treats the victim like a criminal. Jodie Foster gives an Oscar®-winning performance as the hard-living fiercely independent Sarah Tobias, who is gang-raped in the back of a neighborhood bar. But that is only the beginning of her ordeal. Now Sarah finds herself battling the legal system, not once but twice, as she and her attorney (Kelly McGillis) go after both her attackers and the onlookers whose cheering fueled and encouraged the assault.
