Spear of Destiny- Live at the Hacienda
13 Grapes of Wrath
This was the 'crossover period' between Theatre Of Hate, its Post-Punk left-field music and what was to become the Spear Of Destiny, with its distinctive 'sound'. The band Spear of Destiny on this film was playing prototype arrangements of songs that later would evolve into a much fuller sound, taking in keyboards & brass arrangements. The music played was mostly from the Album 'Grapes of Wrath', which as an Album was either praised for its bravery & direction, or misunderstood at best by critics hoping for simply another version of Theatre of Hate.
We walked out on a stage at The Hacienda, Manchester on the 15/9/1983 (date correct ?) where it would have been a much easier proposition to have resurrected Theatre of Hate & gave the audience what they would have wanted & expected. That's not what happened.
Instead, there wasn't a 2 guitar set-up, simply myself doing the guitar work throughout, there was an amazing amount of space between each instruments playing. Also, the total speed rush of Theatre of Hate was no longer there, at times it would appear almost laid back, the interplay between the instruments more important than the race to the last post!
Different influences were occurring in the songs, the 'Northern Soul' feel to 'Murder of Love', the almost straight blues to the 'Preacher', for the first time an extended guitar solo on 'Grapes of Wrath', there had been a lot going on in-between T.O.H. and this the first prototype Spear.
I think it stopped people dead in their tracks and would take a little thinking about to say the least. It was me through the band exercising an ability to change, there was no real promotion to what it had changed to prior to the Tour, we simply did it and be damned to the consequences, part bravery, part crazy!! At the time in music there was still a window where you could do such things, I took it.
This show at the infamous Hacienda (British Pharmaceuticals) was part of the first Spear of Destiny Tour, and was a showcase to what I had always known was to be a pretty packed house full of hardcore Theatre of Hate fans. There were more than a few stunned faces in the audience that night. Today the site of the Hacienda is luxury flats for nice people with nice cars living a coffee table magazine lifestyle, as opposed to the drug/music Mecca it was in its 'bigtime'!
As many people remember it, it was a way of living for a whole scene/Mancs/Factory/Joy Division/New Order/Happy Mondays. Both Theatre of Hate and Spear of Destiny took part in it when in town and loitering with intent, and this film captures Spear as it took shape live on stage, heading in a what was to be a very different direction.

The Haçienda
The Haçienda was a nightclub and music venue in Manchester, England, which became famous in the Madchester years of the late 1980s and early 1990s. The Haçienda opened in 1982, and despite considerable and persistent financial troubles survived until 1997 – the club was mainly supported by record sales from New Order. The Haçienda is associated with the rise of acid house and rave music.
Creation
The former warehouse occupied by the club was at 11-13, Whitworth Street West on the south side of the Rochdale Canal: the frontage was curved and built of red brick. Before it was turned into a club, the Haçienda was a yacht builder's shop and warehouse before becoming a Bollywood cinema in the 1970s, showing films to the local Asian community.
Originally conceived by Rob Gretton, it was largely financed by the record label Factory Records and the band New Order along with label boss Tony Wilson. It was on the corner of Whitworth Street West and Albion Street, close to Castlefield, in the centre of the city. FAC 51 was its official designation in the Factory catalogue. New Order and Tony Wilson were directors of the club.

Theatre of Hate
Theatre of Hate are a post-punk band formed in Britain in 1980.
Led by singer-songwriter and ex-member of punk band The Pack, Kirk Brandon, the original group also consisted of guitarist Steve Guthrie, bassist Stan Stammers (The Straps/Epileptics), saxophonist John Lennard and drummer Luke Rendle from Crisis/The Straps.
The Pack
The Pack were a British punk rock band formed in 1978. Comprising Kirk Brandon (vocals, guitar), Simon Werner (died 26 Nov 2010) (guitar), Jonathan Werner (bass), and Rab Fae Beith (later of UK Subs) (drums). Beith was eventually replaced by Jim Walker (drums). The band released two singles in 1979, before a change of name to Theatre of Hate.

In 1980, The Pack evolved into Theatre of Hate, with Luke Rendle replacing Walker on drums, Stan Stammers joining on bass, Steve Guthrie on guitar and John "Boy" Lennard on sax (the Werners joined The Straps, who Stan Stammers had previously played for).<ref name="Strong" Inspired by Antonin Artaud's book Theatre and its DoubleThe band took its name from the concept of the Theatre of Cruelty: "Artaud called for the emotional involvement of the audience. Singer Brandon borrowed the thespian term because he was trying to do the same." The first Theatre of Hate release was the "Original Sin" single in November 1980, which reached No. 5 on the UK Indie Chart." Theatre of Hate garnered much early attention as a live act and made their album debut in 1981 with the concert LP He Who Dares Wins (Live at the Warehouse Leeds). Steve Guthrie left the band shortly after the album's release. Another concert recording followed, Live at the Lyceum.

Calvin Harris
Adam Richard Wiles (born 17 January 1984), better known by his stage name Calvin Harris, is a Scottish DJ, singer, songwriter, record producer, recording artist and remixer. His debut album, I Created Disco, was released in 2007 and was the precursor to his top-10 singles "Acceptable in the 80s" and "The Girls". In 2009, Harris released his second studio album, Ready for the Weekend, which debuted at number one on the UK Albums Chart and earned a gold certification from the British Phonographic Industry within two months of release. Its lead single, "I'm Not Alone", became his first number one on the UK Singles Chart.
Harris rose to international prominence in 2012 with the release of his third studio album, 18 Months. Topping the UK charts, the album became his first to chart on the Billboard 200 in the US, reaching number 19. All eight of the album's singles; "Bounce", "Let's Go", "We'll Be Coming Back", "Sweet Nothing", "Drinking from the Bottle", "I Need Your Love", "Thinking About You" and "Feel So Close", along with "We Found Love" reached the top 10 of the UK Singles Chart.

Holy Lance
The Holy Lance (German: Heilige Lanze), also known as the Holy Spear, the Spear of Destiny, or the Lance of Longinus, is the name given to the lance that pierced the side of Jesus as he hung on the cross, according to the Gospel of John. Several churches across the world claim to possess this lance.
Biblical references
The lance (Greek: λόγχη, lonkhē) is mentioned in the Gospel of John (19:31–37), but not the Synoptic Gospels. The gospel states that the Romans planned to break Jesus' legs, a practice known as crurifragium, which was a method of hastening death during a crucifixion. Just before they did so, they realized that Jesus was already dead and that there was no reason to break his legs. To make sure that he was dead, a Roman soldier (named in extra-Biblical tradition as Longinus) stabbed him in the side.

Spear of Destiny- Live at the Hacienda
13 Grapes of Wrath
This was the 'crossover period' between Theatre Of Hate, its Post-Punk left-field music and what was to become the Spear Of Destiny, with its distinctive 'sound'. The band Spear of Destiny on this film was playing prototype arrangements of songs that later would evolve into a much fuller sound, taking in keyboards & brass arrangements. The music played was mostly from the Album 'Grapes of Wrath', which as an Album was either praised for its bravery & direction, or misunderstood at best by critics hoping for simply another version of Theatre of Hate.
We walked out on a stage at The Hacienda, Manchester on the 15/9/1983 (date correct ?) where it would have been a much easier proposition to have resurrected Theatre of Hate & gave the audience what they would have wanted & expected. That's not what happened.
Instead, there wasn't a 2 guitar set-up, simply myself doing the guitar work throughout, there was an amazing amount of space between each instruments playing. Also, the total speed rush of Theatre of Hate was no longer there, at times it would appear almost laid back, the interplay between the instruments more important than the race to the last post!
Different influences were occurring in the songs, the 'Northern Soul' feel to 'Murder of Love', the almost straight blues to the 'Preacher', for the first time an extended guitar solo on 'Grapes of Wrath', there had been a lot going on in-between T.O.H. and this the first prototype Spear.
I think it stopped people dead in their tracks and would take a little thinking about to say the least. It was me through the band exercising an ability to change, there was no real promotion to what it had changed to prior to the Tour, we simply did it and be damned to the consequences, part bravery, part crazy!! At the time in music there was still a window where you could do such things, I took it.
This show at the infamous Hacienda (British Pharmaceuticals) was part of the first Spear of Destiny Tour, and was a showcase to what I had always known was to be a pretty packed house full of hardcore Theatre of Hate fans. There were more than a few stunned faces in the audience that night. Today the site of the Hacienda is luxury flats for nice people with nice cars living a coffee table magazine lifestyle, as opposed to the drug/music Mecca it was in its 'bigtime'!
As many people remember it, it was a way of living for a whole scene/Mancs/Factory/Joy Division/New Order/Happy Mondays. Both Theatre of Hate and Spear of Destiny took part in it when in town and loitering with intent, and this film captures Spear as it took shape live on stage, heading in a what was to be a very different direction.

And for relaxing, there are gorgeous tropical beaches along Colombia's Caribbean and Pacific coasts, but you can find even more laidback and peaceful retreats on the idyllic and unspoilt Caribbean island of Providencia.

ITINERARY
Day 1: Depart Quito abd drive up the Eastern Cordillera, to a 4065 m. high mountain pass. Within two hours reach Termas de Papallacta, Ecuador's most beautiful thermal hot springs Resort and Spa, located in between spectacular mountain forests of the Eastern Andes slopes. Enjoy a morning hike through the surrounding mountain forests and grassy paramo near the resort. This ecological reserve is managed by a local foundation and harbors many peculiar species of flora and fauna (more than 160 bird species, mountain tapirs, spectacled bears and many other species).
Day 2: Depart Papallacta through the lush and green cloud forests of the Eastern Andes. After a short drive stop at a cloud forest lodge where we can observe many species of hummingbirds. See these small birds flying around us at a very close distance. We continue the journey through the last hills of the Eastern 'Cordillera' towards the great Amazon basin. At midday we will arrive at Cotococha Amazon Lodge, a retreat located on the shores of the Napo River, offering spacious and comfortable bungalows, built in native design. After lunch we walk in the rainforest ready to find the secret wonders of the mysterious hidden jungle, finding plant species with medicinal properties. After about three hours of walking we will arrive at the lodge again. At night, the jungle sounds and the illumination with lots of candles, torches and oil lamps, create a unique and romantic atmosphere at Cotococha Amazon Lodge. Enjoy dinner and gather around the cozy fireplace.
Day 3: Depart by canoe upstream arriving to a small shore where we begin a one hour walk, marveling at the jungle's diverse flora and fauna. After our short hike, we'll find ourselves in a breathtaking cascade "La Cascada de Latas" where we will take a refreshing bath in its clear crystal waters and enjoy the surrounding views. For the adventurous, go tubing on the river. After lunch leave the Cotococha Amazon Lodge and continue the journey to Baños. On route we will make a short stop in Puyo, where we will visit a small Balsa wood factory. After Puyo enjoy spectacular views of the Pastaza Gorge, the surrounding cloud forests with thousands of orchids, dramatic waterfalls, cliff side farms and untouched views of Sangay and Llanganates National Parks..In the evening we reach Baños, and arrive at Luna Runtun, the Adventure SPA, spectacularly located on a hill above Baños nestled within the Sangay National Park, which has been declared a World Natural Heritage Site. Enjoy views of Baños deep below in the valley, the active Tungurahua volcano (5016 m.) and the Llanganates National Park,
Day 4: Depart Baños for a drive along the 'Avenue of the Volcanoes', through the central Andean valley. Visit the Salasaca community, where many tapestries and other woven products are made by the local indigenous people. With clear weather we will be able to see at least 11 of Ecuador's 55 volcanoes. At noon we will arrive at an ancient hacienda, for lunch. The hacienda was a former Inca fortress and palace from the 15th century and nowadays still holds original Inca walls and a complete chapel, built in the imperial style of the Incas. After lunch continue to the Cotopaxi National Park for a short visit to a little museum which informs about the park. The centerpiece of the park is the Cotopaxi volcano (5897 m.), the world's highest active and snowcapped volcano. We continue and stop at the Limpiopungo lake at 3800 meters altitude. If we feel fit enough we can continue our drive to the parking lot at 4600 m. from where it is a strenuous 45 minute walk up to the José Ribas refuge at 4800 m., a mountain refuge halfway the volcano. Afterwards we return to our vehicle for our drive back to Quito. Drop off at the hotel of our choice.

Hacienda Venecia is a working coffee plantation covering approximately 200 hectors (about 480 acres) which provides people from around the world a taste of the finest Manizales coffee. The plantation employs around 100 people all throughout the year and about 400 people during the peak picking season. It's a big operation and there is always plenty to see here, no matter what time of year you visit.
Tours Hacienda Venecia
On this guided coffee tour you are encouraged to drink as much coffee as you like, while you learn to appreciate how that cup of coffee came to be. Starting in a classroom setting, you are then taken to the where the coffee beans are grown, slowly making your way to where the beans are processed and prepared for transport. The tour lasts approximately 2.5 - 3 hours with an optional lunch for 10,000 Pesos. After the tour, you are invited to stay longer to use the pool and to enjoy the surrounding area before take a public jeep back to Manizales, costing about 3,500 Pesos which leaves at about 12:30pm. If you decide to stay longer you can take the 5:30pm jeep back to the center of Manizales. Hacienda Venecia also has accommodation if you would like to spend the night. The tour costs 25,000 Pesos per person which includes being picked up from your hostel or hotel at 9.00am - 9.30am. There is no group minimum. To make a reservation, it is preferable by phone but can be made by email. Please make sure you get a confirmation if making reservations by email.

After the tour, you are invited to stay longer to use the pool and to enjoy the surrounding area before take a public jeep back to Manizales, costing about 3,500 Pesos which leaves at about 12:30pm. If you decide to stay longer you can take the 5:30pm jeep back to the center of Manizales. Hacienda Venecia also has accommodation if you would like to spend the night. The tour costs 25,000 Pesos per person which includes being picked up from your hostel or hotel at 9.00am - 9.30am. There is no group minimum. To make a reservation, it is preferable by phone but can be made by email. Please make sure you get a confirmation if making reservations by email.
