Portrait Lighting for Photography and Video
by Jay P. Morgan Photography
There are several lighting positions that photographers have developed over the years. People like George Hurrell, who used tungsten to shoot stars, used these lighting positions. Learn to identify what a butterfly or Rembrandt light is. Knowing these positions, and where the light placed to create them, will help you see how photographers light their images. These are departure points from which you will create your own look and direction. Its hard to depart from someplace you have never been there. This will teach you the basics and give you a good foundation to build on.
This video is not as slick as some of the others we have done but it has great basic instructions on portrait lighting. (Don't miss the ending its the most exciting part!)

Continuous Lighting Setup w/ 2 Tungsten Lights - A Video Lighting Tutorial
From Jay P Morgan,
In today's TSL lesson we will be shooting a simple 2 light setup using continuous lights. With the option to increase the ISO on this new generation of cameras, it has made the use of continuous lighting more possible for still images. Using Continuous light sources you can create great images that have a cinematic look. We are pulling still frames from the new Canon 1DC that Lens Pro to Go delivered to us. In this case the motion blur will be fine because our subject is relatively static and we want motion in her scarf. We will use a smoke machine to add depth to the image.
Special thanks to our great sponsors!

Photographing Bokeh: A Lighting Tutorial
From Jay P. Morgan.
In today's TSL lesson we are back in New York City shooting in Times Square. I wanted to explore shooting Bokeh with all the intense lighting of Times Square. Not to mention the incredible energy you feel just being there.
The term "bokeh" comes from Japanese and means "blur" or "haze".
In this lesson we will take a look at different lenses and aperture settings to see how they create this cinematic look called Bokeh. Different lenses create different patterns. We will look at using a long lens at 200 mm and how that compares to a 50 mm lens. Before we head out on location to Times Square let's take a look at how to create Bokeh. Keep those cameras rolling and keep on clickn'.

This is a simple look at how to shoot very basic corporate portraits. When you take a job on to shoot an office full of people where do you start? What background do we need? Where do we shoot? What is the schedule and how do I light everyone? These are a few of the questions that are answered in this look at shooting simple corporate portraits. How-to: Powerful DIY video light (800 watt equivalent)
Griffin builds a powerful, DIY video light for $86, using hardware store parts, and eight 100-watt-equivalent compact fluorescent (CFL) bulbs. Also discussed: three-point lighting and color temperature / white balance.
Light output: 12,800 lumens, or 13 incandescent bulbs worth of power, but uses only 184 actual watts
Color temperature: 5,000 degrees Kelvin (often called "daylight")
Power consumption: draws 3.2 amps

Three point video lighting tutorial
This video produced for us by the excellent Gavin Hoey shows how to use a 3 light setup in a coventional 3 point lighting setup he also shows how to light a white background. Although this is for video lighting this would still apply to still photography and these lights are strong enough for portrait photography.

Portrait Photography using continuous lighting
Gavin Hoey explores with the use of the smick.co.uk 3 head super softbox continuous lighting kit to take portraits. The kit is powerful and versatile, this is an alternative to studio flash for taking portraits, the main advantage is that you see what you get.
The kit uses energy saving compact fluorescent daylight bulbs which means that they produce great light and not much heat compared with tungsten redhead type lighting. It can be used as video lighting as well as still photography making this a very versatile bit of kit. www.smick.co.uk

Using Various Lighting Reflectors: A Lighting Tutorial for Photographers
By Jay P. Morgan.
In this Slanted Lens lighting tutorial we take a look at the basics of reflectors and how to use them on location. We shot Liz Hernandez from E-TV on location at the Ultimate Grave Yard and had a great shoot. From this shoot we are going to take a beginning look at reflectors, the different colors and practical application examples on how to use them. As a beginning photographer, using a reflector is an easy way to start to modify light and learn where to place the light source in relationship to your subject. Using reflectors and becoming good at placing them will teach you how to place strobes. Good light placement is the same for both strobes and reflectors but easier to see with a reflector than it is with strobes. The color examples used in this video are all based on Photoflex reflectors which can be seen at http://www.photoflex.com.
Good luck and keep on click'n! Jay P. Morgan

The Arctic Light
Follow me on https://facebook.com/TSOphotography for more photos, videos & updates.
This was filmed between 29th April and 10th May 2011 in the Arctic, on
the archipelago Lofoten in Norway.
My favorite natural phenomenon is one I do not even know the name of, even after talking to meteorologists and astrophysicists I am none the wiser. What I am talking about I have decided to call The Arctic Light and it is a natural phenomenon occurring 2-4 weeks before you can see the Midnight Sun.
The Sunset and Sunrise are connected in one magnificent show of color and light lasting from 8 to 12 hours. The sun is barely going below the horizon before coming up again. This is the most colorful light that I know, and the main reason I have been going up there for the last 4 years, at the exact
same time of year, to photograph. Based on previous experience, I knew this was going to be a very
difficult trip. Having lost a couple of cameras and some other equipment up there before, it was crucial to bring an extra set of everything. I also
made sure I had plenty of time in case something went wrong.
If you can imagine roping down mountain cliffs, or jumping around on slippery rocks covered in seaweed with 2 tripods, a rail, a controller,
camera, lenses, filters and rigging for 4-5 hour long sequences at a time, and then
having to calculate the rise and fall of the tides in order to capture the essence - it all proved bit of a challenge.
And almost as if planned, the trip would turn out to become very
difficult indeed. I had numerous setbacks including: airline lost my
luggage, struggling to swim ashore after falling into the Arctic sea: twice, breaking lenses, filters, tripod, computer, losing the whole dolly rig and controller into the sea, and even falling off a rather tall rock and ending
up in the hospital. As much as I wanted to give up, the best way Out is
always “Through”. I am glad I stuck it through though because there were some amazing sunrises waiting. At 1:06 you see a single scene from day to night to day which is from 9pm to 7am. Think about that for a minute.. 10 hours with light like that.
I asked the very talented Marika Takeuchi to specifically compose and
perform a song for this movie, and what she came up with is absolutely remarkable. Thank you very much Marika!

Shooting time lapses is a labor of love and a study in patience.

Balancing Strobe Lights during Sunset: A Photo Lighting Tutorial!
By Jay P. Morgan
"They say you shouldn't judge a book by a cover, but everyone of us who buys a book spends a few seconds looking at the title and the cover. Not only that, publishers know that readers also flip the book over and look at the picture of the author. That's why more and more authors and publishers are viewing the author photo as a marketing opportunity. The author photo is just another opportunity to tell a story. An author who takes a simple portrait is telling a story, but it's probably something like, "There is a reason this guy isn't a model."
Today's photo shoot is for Robert L. Harding. Robert has written a Thriller called, Death of the Wayang, set in Indonesia, and we wanted to show something strong and action-oriented in the photo. Robert likes airplane and is a student pilot. We had an opportunity to shoot at historic Santa Paula airport surrounded by beautiful scenery, a number of vintage aircraft, including this Steerman Biplane, and framed by a gorgeous California sunset. This lesson shows how we balanced our strobes with a setting sun to get an interesting Author Portrait.
