University of Basel
Founded in 1460, it is Switzerland's oldest university. Erasmus, Paracelsus, Daniel Bernoulli, Jacob Burckhardt, Leonhard Euler, Friedrich Nietzsche, Eugen Huber, Carl Jung, Karl Barth, and Hans Urs von Balthasar are among those associated with the university, which is nowadays noted for research into tropical medicine. The University of Basel was founded in connection with the Council of Basel. The deed of foundation given in the form of a Papal bull by Pope Pius II on November 12, 1459, and the official opening ceremony was held on April 4, 1460. Originally the University of Basel was decreed to have four faculties, namely those of arts, medicine, theology and jurisprudence. The faculty of arts served until 1818 as foundation for the other three academic subjects. Over the course of centuries as many scholars came to the city, Basel became an early center of book printing and humanism. Around the same time as the university itself, the University Library of Basel was founded. Today it has over three million books and writings and is the largest library in Switzerland. This University is also renowned for its former research into Earth Sciences, Slavistics and Astronomy. www.universitieshandbook.com

'...sciences form a democratic reality, the reality we all live in. But even more important is the ability of sciences to be formed by this reality. Societies have to decide what they consider to be right or wrong, in other words: what kind of knowledge they want to be taught, how they want to do this and most important, who they want to share their knowledge with, who they want to educate.' University of Basel, Arch. Seminar, Colossal Statue of Shapur I (2007)
With a group of archaeologists and students (Archaeological institute of university of Basel), I made in November 2005 and March 2007 two expeditions in the Shapur cave which is located in the south of Iran. The colossal statue of Shapur I standing in this cave was my doctoral dissertation with the title (in German): "Die Kolossal-Statue Šāpūrs I. im Kontext der sasanidischen Plastik" which was published 2009 as a monograph. This short video made in March 2007 shows the Shapur cave with the colossal sculpture of the Sasanian King Shapur I. Carnivorous Plant Event Botanical Gardens University Basel 2004.wmv
In August 2004 we arranged an information counter on carnivorous plants (CP) at the Botanical Gardens of the University Basel (Switzerland). It was part of the garden's "Festival of Plants" which took place to celebrate the opening of some new greenhouses. The film features a day at the festival and some macro-shots of Pameridea bugs feeding on insects at their host Roridula.

Basle, Switzerland
Located in northwest Switzerland on the river Rhine, Basel functions as a major industrial centre for the chemical and pharmaceutical industry. The city borders both Germany and France. The Basel region, culturally extending into German Baden-Württemberg and French Alsace, reflects the heritage of its three states in the modern Latin name: "Regio TriRhena". It has the oldest university of the Swiss Confederation (1460). Basel is German-speaking. The local variant of the Swiss German dialects is called Basel German. In 1356 the Basel earthquake destroyed much of the city along with a number of castles in the vicinity. The city offered courts to nobles as an alternative to rebuilding their castles, in exchange for the nobles' military protection of the city. 1493 woodcut of the City of Basel, from the Nuremberg Chronicle. In 1412 (or earlier) the well-known guesthouse Zum Goldenen Sternen was established. Basel became the focal point of western Christendom during the 15th century Council of Basel (1431 1449), including the 1439 AD election of antipope Felix V. In 1459 Pope Pius II endowed the University of Basel where such notables as Erasmus of Rotterdam and Paracelsus. At the same time the new craft of printing was introduced to Basel by apprentices of Johann Gutenberg. MUSIC: Father to Son/That's Enough For Me (Lisa Howard)
