Śīla (Sanskrit) or sīla (Pāli) in Buddhism and its non-sectarian offshoots, is one of three sections of the Noble Eightfold Path, and is a code of conduct that embraces a commitment to harmony and self-restraint with the principle motivation being non-violence, or freedom from causing harm. It has been variously described as virtue,^[1] right conduct,^[2] morality,^[3] moral discipline^[4] and precept.

Sīla is an internal, aware, and intentional ethical behavior, according to one's commitment to the path of liberation. The Sanskrit and Pali word sīla is an ethical compass within self and relationships, rather than what is associated with the English word "morality" (i.e., obedience, a sense of obligation, and external constraint - all of which are quite foreign to the concept of sīla as taught by Gautama the Buddha). In fact, the commentaries explain the word sīla by another word, samadhana, meaning "harmony" or "coordination." ^[5]

Sīla is one of the three practices foundational to Buddhism and the non-sectarian Vipassana movement — sīla, samādhi, and paññā as well as the Theravadin foundations of sīla, dana, and bhavana. It is also the second pāramitā.^[6] Though some popular conceptions of these ethics carry negative connotations of severe discipline and abstinence, sīla is more than just avoiding the unwholesome.

Sīla is also wholehearted commitment to what is wholesome. Two aspects of sīla are essential to the training: right "performance" (caritta), and right "avoidance" (varitta). Honoring the precepts of sīla is considered a "great gift" (mahadana) to others, because it creates an atmosphere of trust, respect, and security. It means we pose no threat to another person's life, property, family, rights, or well-being.^[7]

Non-Harming[link]

Non-harming, Pāli cognate avihiṃsā, is not a technical term in the Buddhist tradition, rather a permeating foundation for the code of conduct known as sīla. Non-harming manifests perspectives both absolute and relative, particularly in the ever-increasingly complex ethics of global culture. For example, though eating meat/animal products is technically different than killing for the meat, if one knows that such foods comes from inhumane industrialized animal husbandry then one may understand one's sīla to present new ethical questions.^[8]

Notions of proper conduct and misconduct may be culturally bound and differ from east to west, introducing various gray areas as yet to be acknowledged or fully understood in the modern urban context of sīla as it relates to such things as alcohol as a digestive and sexuality in general. "Buddha said that teaching in a new culture had to be done very sensitively and had to connect with the culture at hand." - Anagarika Munindra ^[9] For example, there are committed sexual relationships that are technically unmarried, and married sexual relationships where there is misconduct (compulsive sexual behavior). The essential purpose of sīla, is to create harmonious sexual relations and prevent sexual activity which is hurtful to self or others. ^[10] When mature independent people, though unmarried, commit to a sexual relationship through free consent, so long as no other person is harmed, no breach of the training factor is involved. However, understanding of what is "non-harming" may vary according to the sexes and awareness of the individuals. What may seem non-harming to a male may in fact create harmful future impact on a female partner such as being at risk of emotional abandonment and/or unexpected pregnancy- and when the "other" is a sexualized media image, harm may be created if the mind-state participates in delusions that perpetuate any inhumanity, i.e., degradation/disposability. Thus, non-harming is also an integration of humanity of both sexes.

The Asian cultural traditions have had a longstanding code of marriage whereby matchmaking & commitment occurs first and sexual behavior second - to ensure that the physical and emotional needs of both partners are respected. In addition, proper sexual conduct in the eastern tradition aspires towards self-restraint and rechanneling of sexual energy into the higher creative centers of being. Whereas in the west, questioning and re-defining compulsive sexual behavior (of both singles and marrieds) is as yet uncommon.

[edit] Levels of sila

There are several levels of sīla, which correspond to the basic morality of five precepts, the basic morality with asceticism of eight precepts, novice ordination's ten precepts and full ordination's vinaya or patimokkha. Laypeople generally undertake to live by the five precepts which are common to all Buddhist schools. If they wish, they can choose to undertake the eight precepts, which have some additional precepts of basic asceticism.

Five Precepts[link]

The five precepts are not given in the form of commands, but are training guidelines to help one live a life in which one is happy, without worries, and able to meditate well. Breaking one's sīla as pertains to sexual conduct introduces harmfulness towards one's practice or the practice of another person if it involves uncommitted relationship.^[11] They are:^[12]

1. I undertake the training rule to abstain from taking life;
2. I undertake the training rule to abstain from taking what is not given;
3. I undertake the training rule to abstain from sensual misconduct;
4. I undertake the training rule to abstain from false speech; and
5. I undertake the training rule to abstain from liquors, wines, and other intoxicants, which are the basis for heedlessness.

In Buddhist thought, the cultivation of giving (dāna) and ethical conduct will themselves refine consciousness to such a level that rebirth in one of the lower heavens is likely,^[13] even if there is no further Buddhist practice. There is nothing improper or un-Buddhist about limiting one's aims to this level of attainment, although by itself it does not gain one nirvāna or end suffering.^[11]

Eight Precepts[link]

During special occasionans, monastic retreats for lay followers, and such, a more stringent set of precepts is undertaken, usually for 24 hours, until dawn the following day. The eight precepts encourage further discipline and are modeled on the monastic code. Note that in the eight precepts, the third precept on sexual misconduct is made more strict and becomes a precept of celibacy.

The three additional rules of the Eight Precepts are:^[12]

6. “I accept the training rule to abstain from food at improper times.” (e.g. no solid foods after noon, and not until dawn the following day)
7. “I accept the training rule (a) to abstain from dancing, singing, instrumental music, and shows, and (b) from the use of jewelry, cosmetics, and beauty lotions.”
8. “I accept the training rule to abstain from the use of high and luxurious beds and seats.”

Ten Precepts[link]

Novice-monks use the ten precepts, which are the basic precepts for monastics: people who have left the domestic life and live in monasteries.

Patimokkha[link]

Vinaya is the specific moral code for nuns and monks . It includes the patimokkha, a set of rules (227 for monks in the Theravādin recension). The precise content of the scriptures on vinaya (vinayapiṭaka) differ slightly according to different schools, and different schools or subschools set different standards for the degree of adherence to the vinaya.

Mahāyāna Precepts[link]

In Mahāyāna Buddhism, there is also a distinctive vinaya and ethics for bodhisattvas contained within the Mahāyāna Brahmajala Sutra (not to be confused with the Pāli text of that name). These exist above and beyond the existing monastic code, or lay follower precepts.^[14] Here the eating of meat, for example, is frowned upon and vegetarianism is actively encouraged (See: vegetarianism in Buddhism). These precepts, have no parallel in Theravāda Buddhism.

Judy Anne Lumagui Santos-Agoncillo (born May 11, 1978 in Manila, Philippines), popularly known as Judy Ann Santos or Juday/Judai, is an award-winning Filipina film and television actress, product endorser, recording artist, and film producer. She is dubbed as Young Superstar and Queen of Philippine Soap Opera and Teleserye.

She began working as a child actress and has appeared in more than 60 movies, winning 13 Best Actress awards to date in the Drama, Fantasy, Horror, and Comedy genres. She has also acted in numerous television series including Mara Clara and Basta't Kasama Kita.

Santos was discovered at the age of eight, when she passed the audition for Regal Films' Kaming Mga Ulila, a project that became a TV series instead for GMA. Santos's first title role is on IBC-13's Ula, Ang Batang Gubat before forging a long-running television career with ABS-CBN. To date, she has starred in one episodic youth-oriented show (Gimik), two anthologies (Star Drama Theatre Presents, Judy Ann Drama Special), five TV specials (from 2002's A Birthday Wish to 2009's Kuwento Nating Dalawa), ten television series (from Kaming Mga Ulila to Habang May Buhay), one sitcom, George and Cecil, and one reunion show (Your Song Presents: Gimik 2010).

Santos has appeared in more than 60 movies and won 13 Best Actress awards to date in the Drama, Fantasy, Horror, and Comedy genres. She has made several movies with Star Cinema, Regal Films, Viva Films, GMA Films, and other production outfits. Her latest movie is the drama-comedy-romance Hating Kapatid.

In November 2006, Santos was awarded her own star in the Philippines Walk of Fame. In March 2007, she was also inducted into the Paradise of Stars in the Mowelfund Compound. Both honors were spearheaded by German Moreno. In December 2009, ABS-CBN proclaimed Santos as the Face of the 60 Years of Philippine Soap Opera and Reigning Queen of Teleseryes.^[1][2] Most recently^[when?], YES! Santos became a first-time film producer via the independent movie Ploning where she also played the title role. Santos' television characters were featured in the album covers of such soundtracks as Esperanza and Krystala.

In 1999 she released a self-titled debut album and in 2001, Bida Ng Buhay Ko, produced and released by Viva Records.^[4] Santos sang on two tracks in Musika Ng Buhay Ko, a collection of film and TV theme songs, released in 2007, to commemorate her 20 years in showbusiness.

In YES! magazine's List of Top 10 Celebrity Endorsers "based on the quantity and impact of their advertising campaigns in 2007" Santos ranked #4.^[5] In YES! magazine's List of Top 20 Celebrity Endorsers "based on the total (approximate) income in 2008" Santos ranked #6; "based on the total number of endorsements in 2008" Santos ranked #2 with 24 tri-media endorsements.

Santos endorsed Jamby Madrigal in her successful bid for a Senate seat in 2004.^[6] In 2010, Nicodemo Ferrer of the Commission of Elections said that because Santos had declared that she would not be supporting any presidential candidates that she was being considered for a campaign to educate voters how to use new automated voting machines.^[7]

Her parents are Carolina and Manuel Santos, who separated when Judy was 3.^[8] Her father moved to California and had three sons and a daughter there.^[9][10] Her mother moved to Toronto, Canada when Judy was 5 to work as a caregiver.

Her elder brother Jeffrey Santos is councilor of Caloocan City and is married to Inah Santos. Her elder sister Jackie is married to Glenn Hoover.

Marriage and family[link]

In 2005, Santos had her daughter Johanna Lois (nickname: Yohan).^[11][12] Santos married Ryan Agoncillo in a private wedding ceremony on April 28, 2009, in the San Juan de Nepomuceno Church in San Juan, Batangas, Philippines.^[13]

On March 12, 2010, Agoncillo announced on Eat Bulaga! that Santos is pregnant and showed the ultrasound image of the baby. In a short phone patch interview, Santos said it was something they had waited for.^[14] In October 7, 2010, their son was born.^[15]

Santos attended kindergarten at Assumption Convent; elementary at Our Lady of Peace Antipolo (where she graduated with a Performer of the Year Award); and high school at Mount Carmel College.

She recently^[when?] has been interested in culinary arts. She took a crash course in International Cuisine in Chiang Mai, Thailand. She graduated with distinction from the Center for Asian Culinary Arts Studies, studying under Chef Gene Gonzalez.^[16] She took the exam for TESDA National Certification and on July 6, 2009 she passed the exam, receivinga Certificate of Competency from TESDA.^[9][10][17] Since Spring 2006 she has owned and run Kaffe Carabana, a bar/restaurant in Quezon City.^{[18][unreliable source?]}

Santos is head of the Touch A Heart Foundation (launched in 2004), which addresses the education and agriculture needs of a community of Aetas in Bataan and provides medical supplies for the hospital in Cuyo Island, Palawan. A housing project to help revive the careers of veteran actors, small-time comedians and action film sidekicks is also in the works.^[19]

Santos, together with director Dante Nico Garcia, launched the Ploning Foundation on February 22, 2009. This foundation aims to inspire filmmakers to make quality projects intended for a global audience and to impart what the Ploning team learned during their Oscar campaign.^[20]

Tax evasion case[link]

On August 26, 2008, the Supreme Court of the Philippines in a 27-page judgment by the 3rd Division, upheld the tax evasion case against Santos. The high court directed the Philippine Court of Tax Appeals to proceed with the tax lawsuit; the BIR probe showed Santos incurred a P 2.714-million tax deficiency in 2002.^[21]

Agoncillo started modeling at the age of fifteen (15). He has appeared in various television commercials for a variety of products such as Greenwich Pizza (together with Donita Rose), Sprite, Smart Telecommunication, Emperador Brandy and Swish mouthwash.

Agoncillo became one of the original hosts of Mornings at GMA, an early morning variety program of GMA Network. He also hosted Campus Video, a short-lived program shown every Saturday mornings at GMA Network.

He moved to ABS-CBN, and became a co-host in Talk TV, a late morning talk show co-hosted by broadcasters Julius Babao and Christine Bersola-Babao, and actress Janette McBride. Agoncillo was briefly paired with co-host Janet McBride. Rumors spread that the two were exclusively dating for a period of time.

He also hosted Breakfast, an early morning variety program; Star in a Million, with Edu Manzano and Zsa zsa Padilla and Y-Speak, a youth-oriented talk show and debate forum. Both shows are still aired in Studio 23, an ABS-CBN subsidiary. He won his first KBP Golden Dove Awards for his Best Talk Show host in 2005 for Studio 23's Y-Speak.

Agoncillo was the main host of Philippine Idol alongside fellow ABS-CBN actress Heart Evangelista on ABC-5 before it was moved to GMA Network and rebooted into Pinoy Idol.

He returned to hosting with TV5's Talentadong Pinoy, which showcases Filipino undiscovered talents. He also hosts Endemol's Pinoy Fear Factor which airs over ABS-CBN. Pinoy Fear Factor was shot entirely in Argentina.

On March 16, 2009, Ryan joined Eat Bulaga! replaced by long-time host, the late master-rapper Francis Magalona.

Agoncillo is now an Aliw Award Hall of Famer as Best Male Emcee.

Agoncillo joined the talent cast of ABS-CBN. He is most memorable for playing the love interest of Judy Ann Santos in the television soap opera Krystala. He again appeared with Santos in the movie Kasal, Kasali, Kasalo. He received best actor nominations from different award-giving bodies for his portrayal of a confused newly wed husband in this film. He will be doing a new movie with Judy Ann Santos called Mr. Housewife.

He also played a main cast role in Bituing Walang Ningning, an ABS-CBN soap opera featuring singer-actresses Sarah Geronimo, Angelika dela Cruz, and Zsa Zsa Padilla in the leads.

Agoncillo also played leading roles in independent film projects and television drama shows. He played the distinct roles of a grease-filled beggar and a transvestite in two separate dramatic episodes of Maalaala Mo Kaya, the biographical drama series of ABS-CBN.

He topbilled ABS-CBN teleserye, Ysabella with his long time on-screen partner, Judy Ann Santos.

Agoncillo returns to acting on TV with drama series entitled Pieta airing weekday afternoons over ABS-CBN wherein he portrayed Rigor, a character originally portrayed by the late Ace Vergel.

Agoncillo returns to acting again for his new role in May Bukas Pa (in a final episode) where he plays a media cameraman after his wife Judy Ann Santos also guested in the show (in a different episodes).
