Dr. Benjamin Carson on Accusations of 'Tokenism' by MSNBC's Touré & others: I'm Not An 'Uncle Tom'
3/26/13 - Megyn Kelly invited pediatric neurosurgeon and frequent Fox News guest Dr. Ben Carson on her show Tuesday and offered him a platform to defend himself against recent accusations by those on the left that he is no more than the Republican Party's latest "token" minority. Without explicitly using his name, Kelly alluded to comments made by MSNBC's Touré, who said last week that Carson was helping Republicans "assuage their guilt."
Kelly apologized to Carson as she read off some of the names he has been called in recent weeks, like "token" and "oreo," before landing on the quote from "a commentator on a rival network" who said Carson was benefiting from "the GOP's version of affirmative action."
Carson responded calmly, saying, "if you don't have anything useful to say, you attack people. If you feel that your house of cards has been discovered and is starting to come unraveled, you become very desperate." He added, "intelligent people tend to talk about the facts, they don't sit around and call each other names. That's what you can find on a third grade playground."
Addressing the racial aspects of his detractors arguments specifically, Carson said, "they feel if you look a certain way, then you have to stay on the plantation." He mentioned that he's been called an "Uncle Tom" and rejected that term, not for it's racist context, but for its inaccuracy. "Obviously they don't know what an 'Uncle Tom' is," he said. In the novel, "he was very, very subservient, kind of go along to get along type of person." Perhaps referring to his outspoken arguments against Obamacare, he said, "obviously, that's not what I'm doing."

MSNBC Moron Toure » Dr. Ben Carson Is The GOP's "Black Friend"
Libiot Toure explains why he "thinks" Dr. Ben Carson may not actually be the GOP's best way to connect with black voters; the GOP has to actually care about the economic and social problems associated with the minority voters they're seeking to woo. As if only libtards have the solution for their "discriminated-against victims"... which (of course) is the ever-expanding social safety net, staffed with well-pensioned government workers.

Touré on 'Illegal Immigrant' Term: 'Trojan Horse' Masking 'Fear Of Inevitable Browning Of America'
4/8/13 - Touré, co-host of MSNBC's The Cycle, spoke out in support of the Associated Press' recent decision to cease using the term "illegal immigrant" to describe a person. He said that the phrase was loaded and contained inflammatory connotations that should be discarded in the way that saying "negro" to describe an African-American is no longer considered acceptable. Touré called the term "illegal immigrant" a "Trojan Horse," which exacerbates the "fear of the inevitable browning of America."
RELATED: Geraldo Demands To O'Reilly: No More Saying 'Illegal Alien,' Because It's Like Saying 'Negro'
Touré opened his monologue by noting that "illegal Americans" could include figures like Keanu Reeves, Lindsay Lohan, and Martha Stewart.
"We don't define people as illegal," Touré said. "We don't classify people's entire being based on one action. We don't, unless they come to America or stay in America in violation of America's immigration codes."
He said that the phrase itself defines people, and not their actions, as being "illegal." He praised the AP and a variety of other news organizations for banning the phrase.
"Language matters," Touré said. "Illegal immigrant is like a Trojan Horse filled with thugs."
He said that the media has a responsibility not to indict people who may have come to this country illegally or overstayed a visa. Furthermore, illegal immigration is not even violation of the criminal code, Touré said. It is defined as a civil infraction.
"The phrase is inaccurate, leading, and loaded," Touré continued, "purposely planting visions of unwanted people flouting laws and being a plague upon this country, instead of unlucky people who come looking for work willing to do jobs most Americans are uninterested in doing."
"Wrapped up in 'illegal immigrant' is a fear of the inevitable browning of America," Touré concluded. "'Undocumented' works towards a reasonable, productive discussion about that future."

Touré: Benjamin Carson is GOP's 'Black Friend,' Enjoying GOP's 'Affirmative Action'
3/22/13 - MSNBC host Touré criticized the speed with which the Republican Party's opinion leaders have embraced Dr. Ben Carson on Friday, saying that the pediatric neurosurgeon is the equivalent of the GOP's "black friend." Touré said that Republicans are displaying a form of cynicism in their acceptance of Carson as a means of assuaging their guilt over their pas "abusive" relationship with minorities. "Just so we're clear, I'm not really into being the 'black friend,'" Touré began. "If I get that sense that you like me just because I'm black and you're, sort of, exocitcizing that, then your emails stop getting returned."
"But the demand for black friends continues, because some people need them to make themselves feel not racist. Take the Republican Party," Touré continued.
The MSNBC host cited the Republican National Committee's report on the circumstances which led to their losses during the 2012 election cycle. In the report, the RNC advised the GOP to build inroads and relationships with African-Americans.
"I don't feel cared about by the GOP at all," Touré added. "People who respect and care about me don't try to suppress my vote."
He said that this, among other issues, is the logical reasoning behind the African-American community's antipathy towards the Republican Party. "Such is the dysfunctional, abusive relationship the GOP has with black folk," Touré said. "They say they want a new relationship while continuing to try to screw us over."
Touré said that Carson has been embraced so quickly by the GOP because he is helpful for "assuaging their guilt."
"Carson is a brilliant medical thinker, but he's got intellectual tumors in his mind like a flat tax -- which is regressive and ignorant in the face of American wealth inequality where the top 1 percent own 35 percent, and the bottom 60 percent own 2.3 percent," Touré opined. "I doubt Jesus would tax them equally, just as I doubt the GOP would entertain a white, non-politician with unserious ideas."
Touré noted that Carson is the beneficiary of a form of "affirmative action" within the Republican Party which elevates minority voices beyond or in spite of their qualifications.

Touré Defends MSNBC's 'Brilliant' Primetime Lineup To Marc Lamont Hill... Even If They Are All White
With Tamron Hall on NewsNation, Al Sharpton on PoliticsNation and Melissa Harris-Perry on weekend mornings, MSNBC is one of the more racially diverse cable networks on television. But that diversity does not extend to the network's primetime lineup. HuffPost Live's Marc Lamont Hill asked another one of MSNBC's African-American hosts, Touré, to offer his insight on why that might be.
"How come there are no black people hosting at night?" Hill began his interview, eliciting a hearty laugh from Touré.
Touré immediately began defending the network by pointing out that there are only three primetime hosts, giving a brief summary of MSNBC's relatively short history. He said he can "absolutely" see the network installing a black host in primetime. "We have an openly gay woman at 9 o'clock," he added as evidence of the network's "liberal" and "open" outlook.
If you were able to say to me that there is a person in one of those three slots who is not brilliant ... then you can say something, but we have three extraordinary people," he said. When Hill brought up Chris Hayes' low ratings out of the gate, Touré essentially blamed that fact on competition from HLN, which is benefiting immensely from non-stop Jodi Arias trial coverage.
When Touré said he wants to see more people of color in primetime, Hill suggested that Touré could be the man for the job. "You could do 8 o'clock," Hill said, "because a lot of people hate you. That's all it takes."

Touré Savages LL Cool J Over 'Accidental Racist' Song: 'No, I'm Not Going To Forget' Slavery
4/10/13 - MSNBC host Touré tore into both artists LL Cool J and Brad Paisley over the release of their lighthearted duet "Accidental Racist," which tackled persistent racial tensions through song. Touré, an experienced music critic as well as an outspoken expert on race relations, found no redeeming value in their song. Co-host S.E. Cupp said that she could "appreciate" the effort made by both artists in the effort to cool racial tensions though verse. "I like the effort... maybe," Cupp said waveringly.
"Okay," Touré interjected. "No, I'm not giving out any good grades for the effort."
"I hate it," he continued. He said Paisley could not tell his audience to ignore the "dominant meaning" behind the Confederate flag. "No, you can't just re-appropriate the symbol as you wish," Touré added. "If you wear that out in public, as LL says in his verse, you're going to make me uncomfortable."
"It'd be very easy for me to spend the rest of my time beating up on Brad Paisley's show of white guilt," Touré pivoted, "but I don't want to do that straw man -- I want to talk to LL who I am extraordinarily disappointed in."
Touré slammed Cool J over the lyric in his song, "If you forget the gold chains, I'll forget the iron chains."
"Completely false choice," Touré said. "If you don't judge me because I'm wearing a chain, I'll forget about slaver? Which continues to have an impact on this country -- the racial disparity, the income inequality, the incarceration trends. No, I'm not going to forget."
"My God, LL Cool J talking about 'forget the slavery mentality?'" Touré exclaimed. "Mama should knock you out!"

A big thanks to Matthews MSE (www.msegrip.com) especially to Bob Kulesh, Tyler & Ed Phillips for their generous support and patience of this lengthy endeavor. Most of the linear motion control shots were captured using their FloatCam DC Slider, a wonderful piece of engineering for the time lapse world.
'Nightfall' is a three minute tour of light through the City of Angels.
I shot "Nightfall" in an attempt to capture Los Angeles as it transitioned from day to night. As you probably know, LA is an expansive city so shooting it from many different angles was critical. Usually I was able to capture just one shot per day with a lot of driving, exploring, and scouting in between but the times sitting in traffic or a "sketchy" neighborhood often lead to new adventures and interesting places.
Nightfall in particular is my favorite time to shoot time lapse. Capturing the transition from day to night while looking back at the city as the purple shadow of Earth envelopes the eastern skyline and the warm distant twinkling halogen lights spark to life and give the fading sun a run for her money- this will never grow old or boring to me.
In this piece, it was important to me for the shots to both capture and accentuate the movement of light through the day and night and the use of multiple motion control techniques allowed me to do so.
I hope you enjoy watching it as much as I enjoyed creating it.
An English translation of the lyrics-
"It is late. I am looking for my other home, taking an unfamiliar path: a small trail near the factories and the city, cutting through the forest. I can barely see nature when suddenly, night falls. I am engulfed by a world of silence, yet I am not afraid. I fall asleep for a few minutes at the most, and when I wake up, the sun is there and the forest is shining with a bright light.
I recognize this forest. It is not an ordinary forest, it is a forest of memories. My memories. The white and noisy river, my adolescence. The tall trees, the men I have loved. The birds in flight, and in the distance, my lost father.
My memories aren't memories anymore. They are there, with me, dancing and embracing, singing and smiling at me.
I look at my hands. I caress my face, and I am 20 years old. And I love like I have never loved before."

I love being on a bike. It helps me feel free. I get it from my dad. After so many days spent riding and filming through the streets of Montreal, being sometimes quite cold, sometimes quite hot - and sometimes quite scared, I dedicate this movie to him.

Touré: If Adam Lanza Shot Up A Black School There Would Be No Conversation About Guns
toure lanza guns school | Touré took on what he said was a distinctly racial opinion piece in The Daily Caller by National Rifle Association CEO Wayne LaPierre. In that post, the gun rights advocate defended gun ownership by saying that guns are American's only defense in a lawless, post-disaster environment. Touré said that the racial overtones in LaPierre's post were evident and added that, had Newtown shooter Adam Lanza committed his atrocity in a predominately black school, there would be no "national conversation" about gun violence.
RELATED: Touré: Ted Nugent's Presence At State Of The Union A 'Human Middle Finger' To Obama
In an editorial segment on Friday's The Cycle, Touré detailed the epidemic of gun violence in minority communities, particularly among African-Americans. He linked the high rate of gun violence among blacks to the broad support for gun control in the black community, as well as the fact that 83 percent of African-Americans tell pollsters that they do not own a gun while almost a majority of whites do admit to owning a firearm.
"Perhaps we know Wayne LaPierre is wrong about good guys, and bad guys, and guns," Touré said of the black community. "I'm sure many of us find him hard to trust given his obvious use of racial demonization to spread fear that will lead to buying guns."
Touré mocked LaPierre for demonizing a fictional but crime-ridden place called "South Brooklyn."
"I think it's safe to say that when he says that, much of the country envisions a place clogged with black people," Touré said.
"Now, if Adam Lanza had walked into a black public school in this mythical South Brooklyn, or in the South Side of Chicago, we would probably not be having a sustained, national conversation about guns," Touré declared.
He went on to say that gun control is a legislative priority for African-Americans, and President Barack Obama will have achieved a major accomplishment if he manages to sign new laws that restrict gun ownership.
"When people say, 'what has Obama done for the black community?' Tell them, whatever he accomplishes on gun control will disproportionately help us," Touré concluded.

Ben Carson on Lib Toure: "he's Lying... It's a trick we learned in Third Grade"
Ben Carson responded to the awful racist attacks by MSNBC's Toure on Hannity tonight. The pediatric neurosurgeon told Sean, "Well first of all the individual who was just speaking completely has his facts incorrect. Some people refuse to say the word, but I'll say it. He's lying... I think when people don't have anything worthwhile to talk about, and they can't attack you on your character then they start calling you names. This is a trick we learned back in the third grade... Everything for them is about race. I like to say the reason I don't talk about race that often is because I'm a neurosurgeon. And I look at the thing that actually makes the person who they are. It's not the cover. But for them the cover is everything. because they're very superficial thinkers."

"Romney Engaging In The 'Niggerization' Of Obama" Says MSNBC Host Touré
On Thursday's edition of MSNBC's The Cycle the group discussed Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney's assertion that President Obama should "take [his] campaign of division and anger and hate back to Chicago." Co-host Touré saw what he believes to be explicit racial connotations beneath what Romney was saying, calling it the "niggerization" of the campaign.
"That really bothered me," he said. "You notice he said anger twice. He's really trying to use racial coding and access some really deep stereotypes about the angry black man. This is part of the playbook against Obama, the 'otherization,' he's not like us."
"I know it's a heavy thing, I don't say it lightly, but this is 'niggerization,'" Touré said to the apparent shock of his co-panelists. "You are not one of us, you are like the scary black man who we've been trained to fear."
Naturally this led to a battle between Touré and conservative co-host S.E. Cupp. She took particular issue with the fact that Touré admitted that VP Joe Biden's "chains" comments were divisive, but is now calling Romney a "racist" for saying the Obama campaign is "angry."
"Do you see how dishonest that is?" she asked.

Touré denied calling anyone a racist, which prompted Cupp to say, "Certainly you were implying that Mitt Romney and the base will respond to this dog-whistle, racially-charged coding, and hate Obama, the angry black man?"
"Absolutely," he replied.
"That's so irresponsible," Cupp answered back.
"This is not a revolutionary comment," Touré later said. "This is a constituency all-white party that rejects the black vote."
"You have two white guys in Joe Biden and Mitt Romney," Cupp clarified. "Joe Biden made the overtly racial comment and has a history of making bigoted remarks. Mitt Romney was responding to the comment. Yet he is the one responsible for the whole Republican history of racism in politics?"
"That's not what Touré is saying," co-host Krystal Ball interjected. "You're twisting his words."
"No, he can speak for himself," Cupp shot back.
"He's using the playbook Republicans have been using for decades now," Touré concluded.
