Real-time tsunami simulation using a discrete adjoint model (Honshū, Japan)

Demonstration of the potential for real-time tsunami simulations using the MUSE model with adjoint capabilities, in order to build a tsunami warning model. Application to the March 2011 tsunami in Honshū, Japan. The adjoint method allows obtaining the sensitivity of a scalar value (objective) with regard to a large number of design parameters. The idea is to use this method to get a good estimation of the tsunami source (displacement of the sea surface generated by the earthquake) using buoy real-time measurements (DART): - When an earthquake occurs, the model is run forward with a crude estimation of the source, obtained from the location of the earthquake. - When the tsunami wave has passed through the buoys, the model can be run backward using the adjoint model. The r.m.s. difference between the forward model run data and the buoys measurements is taken as the scalar value to minimize. The combination of pre-defined unit sources is to be tuned in order to minimize that scalar value. Then, the model can be run forward using the new tsunami source obtained from the adjoint optimization. Several forward/backward cycles may be needed to get an acceptable description of the tsunami source. - Finally, the model is run forward using all its available features (e.g. dynamic adaptation of polynomial order and mesh) to get the propagation time of the tsunami to the different coasts and its strength. The computational time being 20 times lower than the physical time, this approach allows for real-time prediction of the tsunamis generated by an earthquake. Honshu Combat Fighter and Mini Tanto Knife Review

720HD The Honshu Combat Fighter has a 6.6 inch hollow grind Bowie tip blade. The Honshu Mini Tanto has a 6.25 inch hollow grind tanto tip blade. The steel on both is listed as AUS-8 but they have 7Cr13 stamped on the blades. They have cylindrical metal guards and rubberized handles with skull crusher pommels. Price for each is around $30. These knives are alright, but I like the large Honshu blades better. I could see these knives as light camp or skinning knives (once sharpened up) or maybe for practicing forms. I wouldn't use these for any heavy outdoor or real tactical work, but they do look nice. I think these knives should be cheaper, $20-25 would be a more fair price for these.

The epicenter was 10 kilometers (6.2 miles) beneath the seabed and 240 kilometers (150 miles) offshore. The area was shaken by repeated, smaller aftershocks, the agency said. After the quake, authorities issued a warning that a tsunami potentially as high as 2 meters (2.2 yards) could hit. Sirens whooped along the coast as people ran for higher ground. Ishinomaki, a city in Miyagi, reported a tsunami 1 meter (1 yard) high and other towns reported smaller tsunamis. About two hours after the quake struck, the tsunami warning was cancelled. The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center earlier said there was no risk of a widespread tsunami. Aiko Hibiya, a volunteer for the recovery in Minami-Sanriku, a coastal town devastated by last year's tsunami, said she was at a friend's temporary housing when the quake struck. "It shook for such a long time," she said. She said other volunteers who had been in coastal areas were evacuated to a square and a parking lot as they waited for the tsunami warning to be lifted. Japan has barely begun to rebuild from last year's magnitude-9.0 earthquake, which triggered a tsunami that swelled to 20 meters high in some areas, ravaging dozens of coastal communities in Miyagi and elsewhere. About 19,000 people were killed and some 325,000 people remain displaced from their homes, living in barracks and other temporary quarters. Miyagi prefectural police said there were no immediate reports of damage from Friday's quake and tsunami, although traffic was being stopped in some places to check on roads. Public television broadcaster NHK reported that five people were injured, including a 75-year-old woman in Miyagi who fell while fleeing the tsunami. Police said they could not immediately confirm those reports. Shortly before the earthquake struck, NHK broke off regular programming to warn that a strong quake was due to hit. Afterward, the announcer repeatedly urged all near the coast to flee to higher ground. The Meteorological Agency has an early warning system that, using data from seismographs scattered across Japan, enables it to provide advance warning of the estimated intensity and timing of a major quake. The warning for Friday's quake was issued six minutes before it struck, according to an unnamed official from the Meteorological Agency who spoke on national television more than an hour after the quake. The time has come I think, to attack the Ouchi (or whatever remains of them) on the mainland of Japan. At the start of the video I pronounce "Tercos" wrong, and I mistakenly state that I cannot make Otomo matchlock ashigaru. These are mistakes that I have since been corrected on (thanks, by the way, to those guys), corrections which will be implemented in all recordings henceforth. This was from a previous recording session from a few weeks ago (before I was made aware of said errors). I have a few more parts to go and then I plan on recording more, I will make an announcement in the first such "new" part regarding all of this. With the... "advent" of this latest DLC for Shogun 2, I decided to start a new campaign. I wouldn't have taken on this project unless I thought I could cope, and I intend to complete this in a timely fashion. It helps that the faction, the Otomo, are well tailored to that kind of a playthrough. A gunpowder and religious blitz.
