A great song from a great folk couple.
Lyrics:
Oh, the falcon was a pretty bird, wandered as she flew.
She danced around and pranced around wherever the warm winds blew.
And the falcon was a pretty bird. Her voice was always still,
But men with drums and men with guns they taught her how to kill.
Her eye was on the sparrow. Her mind was on the dove,

From the "Take Heart" album released in 1971. Words and music by Mimi Farina. The song is for and about Janis Joplin who died of an accidental heroin overdose on Oct. 4, 1970. "Rolled in on a sea of disaster. Rode out on a mainline rail." (mainline = intravenous). A great piece of writing.
In the quiet morning there was much despair

A great song from a great folk couple.
Lyrics:
Oh, the falcon was a pretty bird, wandered as she flew.
She danced around and pranced around wherever the warm winds blew.
And the falcon was a pretty bird. Her voice was always still,
But men with drums and men with guns they taught her how to kill.
Her eye was on the sparrow. Her mind was on the dove,
But no one cared and no one dared to speak to her of love.
Her eyes are always hooded. Her claws are sharp as steel.
We teach her not to see too much. We teach her not to feel.
Go build you a log cabin on a mountain so high,
And hear the feathered war-birds yell as she goes screaming by.
She'll tease you. She'll please you. She'll satisfy your needs,
But someday she might turn around and maul the hand that feeds.
Your hours might be numbered. Your end might come someday.
Go break her chain and free her brain and send her on her way.
And the falcon is a pretty bird, wonders as she flies.
She asks us easy questions. We tell her easy lies.

"At the time of Richard Farina`s untimely death in April 1966 (at age 29) he was producing what could have been 25-year old Joan`s first electric folk-rock album, which she ultimately shelved. Only three song from those sessions have ever surfaced over the years, in various collections: "Swallow Song" was a remake of a tume from Richard & Mimi`s second LP, "Reflections in a Crystal Wind". Three decades later, it sounded better than ever here, with Mimi`s magnificent guitar playing on display. "Mimi was a superlative guitar player, aiming for, achieving , and perfecting runnings, styles and gyrations which to this day leave me in awe. Siblings harmony, born of invisible bonds, love and genius, is like no other."

And in the hours that followed no one could repair
That poor girl
Tossed by the tides of misfortune
Barely here to tell her tale
Rolled in on a sea of disaster
Rode out on a mainline rail
She once walked right at my side
I'm sure she walked by you
Her striding steps could not deny
Torment from a child who knew
That in the quiet morning there would be despair
And in the hours that followed no one could repair
That poor girl, she cried out her song so loud
It was heard the whole world round
A symphony of violence
The great Southwest unbound.
In the quiet morning there was much despair
And in the hours that followed no one could repair
That poor girl
Tossed by the tides of misfortune
Barely here to tell her tale
Rolled in on a sea of disaster
Rode out on a mainline rail

Cool FM broadcast from what must been a VERY hip (read: radical hippie type hip) radio station at the time, thanks to its DJs, WNCR-FM in Cleveland…
Ah, Mimi Baez Fariña. If you’ve ever seen the Pete Seeger “Rainbow Quest” TV programme with Richard & Mimi Fariña, you know they were in love, and man, she was a lovely soul, indeed. I saw her with Banana, of Youngbloods fame, a couple of times at the Iron Horse & stunning is about all I can say.
She was one of the pivotal figures of the American ’60s folk movement along with her Beat activist writer, her husband, a prince of man, Richard. There must be more recordings of them out there somewhere. Had Richard lived, it would have been interesting to see where his protester & timeless songwriting prowess could have led him, but we can only wonder. In any case, I digress. Certainly there are some who are longtime Tom Jans fans & I would welcome a proper entry of appreciation in his direction. “Take Heart” is a gem & very likely it is not the only one from him. If that album seems a bit too pretentiously cute with the passage of time, I think it stands out anyway. I mean, in this election week, “Take Heart”, indeed. “Been Down So Long, It Looks Like Up To Me” carried me circa ‘71 and “Be Not Content” has the real message - Yr daily dose is in the OJ, man, just sip & descend into the Haight & see what today will bring.
kneesfudd also added:
Quite fine but not super hi-fi FM, with warts.
Warts: Not bad. Some o’ the ol’ hiss & a low level high frequency noise from radio that can be notched out with EQ, but I steered clear. Some dropouts, but mostly all fixed. Slight speed fluctuations for a second on Track 1 and two seconds on Track 8 (very minor)! There are very long dialogues & introductions to songs which could be tracked out. Opening for Dave van Ronk.
