Sherdog is an American website devoted to the sport of mixed martial arts (MMA).^[1][2][3] The site is a member of the Crave Online network and provides MMA related content for ESPN.com.^[4]

History[link]

Sherdog was created by photographer Jeff Sherwood (Nicknamed "Sherdog") in 1997 and was later refined with the help of Garrett Poe.^[5] Sherdog features MMA news,^[6] individual records of fighters,^[7] reviews and previews of MMA events,^[8] interviews with fighters and referees,^[9] user forums,^[10] divisional & pound-for-pound fighter rankings,^[11] and original radio programs.^[12]

Sherdog is also home to the Sherdog Radio Network, an internet-only sports talk network featuring Sherdog writers and staffers. Weekly programs include The Savage Dog Show hosted by Greg Savage and Jeff Sherwood, Beatdown hosted by TJ DeSantis and Jon Luther, It's Time hosted by Bruce Buffer and The Jordan Breen Show hosted by Jordan Breen.

The current schedule includes Beatdown and SDS on Monday, Wednesday and Friday, It's Time on Tuesdays, the Jordan Breen Show on Tuesdays and Thursdays, and The SRN Rewind every Sunday evening. Also included for big events are SRN Roundtables providing previews and "Beatdown After the Bell" for post-fight recaps.

Sherdog has also affiliated with ESPN to provide extensive MMA content for their site. The deal includes ESPN sharing Sherdog's extensive Fight Finder database. The deal would also include the Sherdog Radio Network being part of ESPN's podcast center.^[13]

The website also boasts a highly active and lively forum section composed of thousands of members from all over the world. It is the 74th largest forum (by post count), 403rd (by member count).^[14] The forum boasts 235,000 members, who have collectively submitted over 36 million posts. ^[15]

The site has recently begun hosting free live streams of mixed martial arts events from organizations such as Palace Fighting Championships, Wargods and M-1 Global.[1] [2] [3]

Year-end awards[link]

Beginning in 2004 under then-executive editor Josh Gross, Sherdog.com has awarded "Fighter of the Year" honors to the fighter who has been the most outstanding for that calendar year. In 2008, Sherdog expanded its year-end awards to include categories such as "Knockout of the Year", "Submission of the Year", "Fight of the Year", among others. Sherdog now recognizes 12 awards annually.

Dana White (born July 28, 1969) is the current President of the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC), a mixed martial arts organization based in the United States.

Biography[link]

Born in Manchester, Connecticut on July 28, 1969, White grew up in Las Vegas, Nevada, Ware, Massachusetts and Levant, Maine. White is a passionate Boston Red Sox fan. During his youth, he bounced back and forth between Boston and Maine. He attended the University of Massachusetts Boston but did not finish; however, while there he did launch a boxing program for inner-city youth.^[3]

White has a background as an aerobics instructor. In 1992, White established Dana White Enterprises in Las Vegas. He conducted aerobics classes at three gyms^[4] in the Las Vegas area and began managing MMA fighters Tito Ortiz and Chuck Liddell.

While working as a manager, White learned that Semaphore Entertainment Group, the parent company of the UFC, was looking for a buyer for the UFC. White contacted childhood friend Lorenzo Fertitta, an executive at Station Casinos, and a former commissioner of the Nevada State Athletic Commission. Within a month, Lorenzo and his older brother Frank bought the UFC, with White installed as its president.^[5] White currently owns about 9% of Zuffa, LLC, the entity the Fertitta brothers created to own and manage the UFC.^[3]

White failed to comment on a potential network broadcast deal at the UFC 136 press conference. The next day it was confirmed that the UFC and Fox broadcast networks had made a multiple year deal.^[6]

Controversy[link]

Loretta Hunt[link]

On April 1, 2009, White was videotaped in a verbal tirade against Loretta Hunt, a sportswriter for Sherdog, in response to an article she wrote. In the video posted on his YouTube account, White used derogatory language in an obscenity-laced rant. The video was pulled from his official UFC YouTube page but has been widely republished across the internet and come under fire, including by GLAAD for his use of anti-gay slurs.^[7][8][9] White would later apologize for his slurs. He specifically did not include Hunt in the apology.^[10] Hunt responded by saying "I stand by the story. It's accurate."^{[citation needed]}

Miguel Torres[link]

In December of 2011, White cut fighter Miguel Torres from the UFC after Torres tweeted "If a rape van was called a surprise van, more women wouldn’t mind going for rides in them. Everyone likes surprises." In an interview with Sports Illustrated confirming Torres' firing over the controversial remarks, White claimed "Now there's no explanation for that. There's absolutely nothing I could say to make any sense of that. And the fact that he even thinks that's funny or that's a joke, it disturbs me. It bothers me." The firing of Torres immediately sparked controversy after it was revealed that White did not similarly punish two fighters of greater marquee value – Forrest Griffin and Rashad Evans, both of whom have fought in the main event of multiple Pay-Per-View cards and the latter slated to fight in the main event of a fight card scheduled to air on the FOX network on January 28, 2012 – for making similarly offensive remarks:^[11] Griffin commenting that "Rape is the new missionary"^[12] and Evans evoking the recent child abuse scandal involving Penn State University while promoting a fight.^[13] Torres has since re-signed with the UFC after having a talk with Dana.

Charity[link]

In December 2010 White donated $50,000 to the Fransisco Espinoza foundation. White donated approximately $8,000 to help pay for the brain tumor treatment of two-year-old British girl, Ruby Owen. The young girl's family had described themselves as being "shocked and over the moon". Ruby Owen's uncle, being a UFC fan had contacted White via email and asked if he could help by donating to the Ruby Owen fund raising website. White and Owen have never officially met.^[14] In an act of compassion towards a fan, he gave $300 to one man without hesitation who said that he "just received a speeding ticket while racing across town to meet him".^[15] Shortly after being named 2009 Nevada Sportsman of The Year, White added $100,000 from his pocket to the $250,000 total raised for the fund raising marathon sponsored by ESPN Radio 1100 for Las Vegas.^[16]

Feud with M-1 Global[link]

After signing negotiations with M-1 Global Russian Heavyweight MMA fighter Fedor Emelianenko fell through in 2009,^[17] White and the UFC became the subject of debate and criticism from fans and experts alike. On several occasions, White referred to Emelianenko as "a fake, a phony and a farce.^[18][19]

On June 26th, 2010 following Emelianenko's first legitimate defeat of his career to Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu ace Fabricio Werdum, White shared a simple ":)" via Twitter.^[20] The same symbol was expressed by White following Emelianenko's 2nd round doctor stoppage loss to Antonio "Bigfoot" Silva in the opening round of the 2011 Strikeforce GP.^[21] White followed this with an insult to Fedor's manager and M-1 Global President Vadim Finkelstein.^[22] This began a war of words on the social networking site. M-1 Global’s director of operations, Evgeni Kogan, stood up for Finkelstein and invited White to repeat his words to Finkelstein in person. When fans attempted to reason with White, they were met with similar contempt and insults.^[23]

There is controversy over whether Fedor Emelianenko and White have actually met.^[24] White has claimed to have met Emelianenko on a "crazy island in the middle of nowhere".^[25] In 2011, Emelianenko denied that this encounter ever took place.^[26]

Personal life[link]

White and his wife have two sons and a daughter.^[27] He is an atheist, and has stated that he is "fascinated" by religion.^[28]

Matthew James Lindland (born May 17, 1970) is an American mixed martial artist, Olympic wrestler and politician. He won the Oregon Republican Party's nomination for the Oregon House of Representatives, District 52 seat on May 20, 2008.

Wrestling[link]

Lindland started wrestling at age 15 at Gladstone High School in Gladstone, Oregon. In 1991, he won the junior college 158 lbs national title wrestling for Clackamas Community College.^[2]

Lindland then went on to wrestle at the University of Nebraska, Division 1 of the NCAA. He won the Big Eight title at 158 in 1993. Following up that title, Lindland had a record of 36-0 for the 1993 season going into the National Tournament, and was the #1 ranked wrestler for his weight class. He suffered an upset in the first round of the tournament however, and did not place. Following his college career Lindland began to compete in both Freestyle and Greco-Roman events, finding success in both but ultimately deciding to concentrate all his effort upon the Greco-Roman style.

The highpoint of his career was when he represented the United States in Greco-Roman Wrestling at the 2000 Summer Olympics in the 69–76 kg weight category, winning the silver medal. His mixed martial arts career had actually started 3 years prior, having fought at events such as IVC 6, and it is notable that he continued to compete in amateur wrestling as well as mma following his olympic competition. Following his first UFC match, at UFC 29, Lindland managed to secure a silver medal at the world championships and a U.S. National title in 2001. Lindland was still a top 10 ranked wrestler in his weight class for the nation until 2004, when his wrestling career finally came to an end, already being a veteran of over a dozen mma fights as well, including competing in a title match.

Lindland was notable for having secured his spot on the US Olympic team through the courts. In the finals of the United States Olympic trials, Lindland lost to Keith Sieracki, who Lindland had accused of tripping him (under the rules of Greco-Roman wrestling, athletes are not permitted the use of their legs for advantage in defense of offensive moves). After appealing, an arbitrator ordered a rematch for Lindland and Sieracki, in which Lindland won 9-0.^[3]

The USOC however sought to keep Sieracki on the team, and appealed in federal court. A federal district judge, then a three-judge panel of the 7th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, both decided in Lindland's favor. A request for a hearing by the USOC in the Supreme Court of the United States was denied, which settled Lindland's status on the team.^[3] Lindland would later earn his nickname "The Law" from the protracted case.^[4]

Mixed martial arts[link]

Lindland started mixed martial arts training with Randy Couture, Dan Henderson and others at Team Quest. He won four fights in the middleweight division of the Ultimate Fighting Championship before losing to Murilo Bustamante in a championship match at UFC 37.^[5]

Lindland's next loss came at the hands of Falaniko Vitale, who Matt Lindland attempted to slam, only to knock himself out in the process. This self-KO features in many comedy MMA blooper reels and is something that Lindland now laughs about. At UFC 54 Lindland was dropped from the UFC roster for breaking one of the sponsorship and advertising-related terms of his contract by wearing an unapproved T-shirt at the weigh-ins. After his dismissal Lindland continued to corner fighters at UFC events such as in B.J. Penn's bout against Georges St. Pierre. He has also continued his professional MMA career in IFL and Bodog Fight with five wins and two losses, with the two losses coming outside of his weightclass against the future UFC Light heavyweight champion Quinton Jackson and the Pride Heavyweight champion Fedor Emelianenko. After his loss to Jackson, Lindland joined the International Fight League, which also marked Lindland's debut as an IFL team coach – he fought against top twenty middleweight Jeremy Horn. Lindland won by TKO early in the second round. He then beat Carlos Newton at IFL Houston at the 1:43 mark of Round 2 by submission due to guillotine choke.^[6][7] Lindland defeated Fabio Negao via unanimous decision on July 19, 2008 at Affliction: Banned in Anaheim, California. At Affliction: Day of Reckoning on the Jan 24, 2009, he was defeated by Vitor Belfort and suffered a devastating KO loss. Lindland is the former coach of the Portland Wolfpack in the International Fight League.

There is currently a documentary called "Fighting Politics", being filmed about Matt and his MMA career. ^[8]

Strikeforce[link]

On April 13, 2009, Lindland signed a three-fight deal with Strikeforce^[9] and made his debut against Ronaldo Souza at Strikeforce: Evolution on December 19, 2009. Lindland lost the fight via first-round submission by way of arm triangle choke.^[10][11]

Lindland Headlined Strikeforce Challengers 8 on May 21, 2010, in his hometown of Portland, Oregon, defeating Kevin Casey.

He fought Robbie Lawler at Strikeforce: St. Louis on December 4, 2010.^[12] Lindland was knocked out fifty seconds into the first round.^[13]

In addition, he is a "Mixed Martial Arts Management" instructor^[14] for the online sports career training school,^[15] Sports Management Worldwide, in Portland, Oregon.

Personal life and political aspiration[link]

Matt and his wife Angie have two children, a son named James and a daughter named Robin.^[16]

On March 11, 2008, Lindland filed as a Republican to run for the Oregon House of Representatives in District 52. The seat was formerly held by Republican Patti Smith.^[17][18][19] Lindland defeated fellow Republican Phyllis Thiemann in the May 20, 2008 primary, 58 to 42 percent. He advanced to the general election and was defeated by Hood River, Oregon Democrat Suzanne VanOrman by around 58 percent to Lindland’s 41 percent.^[20]

Lindland appears in the mixed martial arts documentary Fight Life, set for release in the summer of 2011, the film is directed by independent filmmaker James Z. Feng and produced by RiLL Films.^[21]

Lawsuits[link]

In Early 2011 former training partner Dan Henderson filed a lawsuit in California federal district court against Lindland and his company, Team Quest Fight Club, LLC, alleging trademark infringement, copyright infringement and unfair competition. The lawsuit boils down to the issue of who has the right to use the Team Quest trademarks.^[22]

On March 3, 2011 a suit was filed against Lindland in the Multnomah County Circuit Court by Gonzalo Aldana Gamboa regarding the theft of six marijuana plants. The suit alleges that Gamboa was granted permission to grow the plants on Lindland’s property in Eagle Creek, Ore., last October under the Oregon Medical Marijuana Program (OMMP). However, Gamboa claims that Lindland would not allow him to collect the marijuana when Gamboa returned in November.^[23]

The OMMP is a state registry program which processes applications for medical marijuana identification cards, as well as registering “grow sites.” According to the suit, Gamboa registered the growth and harvest of the six plants with the state in October. He is reportedly seeking $122,880, the estimated street value of the lost marijuana.^[24]

Eddie Bravo (born Edgar Cano on May 15, 1970) is a Mexican-American practitioner of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu who holds a second degree black belt under Jean-Jacques Machado. He is most famous for his win as a brown belt against Royler Gracie by triangle choke in the 2003 Abu Dhabi Submission Wrestling championships and his particular style of no-gi Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, called 10th Planet Jiu-Jitsu. He is also known for his mixed martial arts commentating on the Ultimate Fighting Championship and music composition. In an interview he advocated marijuana as performance enhancing.^[2][3] He lives in Hollywood, California, where he ran his 10th Planet Jiu-Jitsu school out of Legends MMA until 5/11/12. Is presently teaching at 10th Planet in Burbank, Ca.

Chan Sung Jung[link]

At UFC Fight Night 24, Chan Sung Jung, aka "the Korean Zombie" forced Leonard Garcia to tap to a spine lock called "the twister", the lock is also known in amateur wrestling as a "guillotine", not to be confused with the guillotine choke which is used widely in MMA. It was the first time the submission had been used to finish a fight in UFC history. He talked about the move after the fight, "It's something I saw a long time ago on the Internet on video," Jung said. "It's one of Eddie Bravo's moves. It's something I practiced because it looks fun and I do it quite a bit in practice. I have always told people I was going to try it sometime in competition. I wanted to do it in the UFC and I was able to, finally."^[7]

Hector Lombard (born February 2, 1978) is a Cuban born, Australian mixed martial artist and former Olympic Judoka who is currently signed to the Ultimate Fighting Championship.

Mixed martial arts[link]

Hector Lombard, a 4th degree black belt in Judo and former Olympic Judo competitor from Cuba. Lombard currently trains at the world-renowned American Top Team facility in Miami, Florida. Marcus "Conan" Silveira (ATT Head Coach) awarded Lombard with a black belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu following his victory at CFC 12.^[1]

PRIDE[link]

In 2006, Lombard fought twice in Pride Fighting Championship, losing two unanimous decisions, one to Akihiro Gono and one to Gegard Mousasi.

Cage Fighting Championship[link]

Lombard headlined the first Cage Fighting Championship show on July 28, 2007, where he fought top Australian fighter Kyle Noke. The result was a controversial draw. On November 23, 2007, Lombard defeated French Kickboxer and Actor Jean-François Lénogue to be the CFC Middleweight Champion. He has defended his title six times with the last title defense coming against Art Santore.^[2] Lombard next successfully defended his belt against UFC veteran Joe Doerksen at CFC 16 on March 25.

Ultimate Fighting Championship[link]

Lombard was scheduled to compete for the promotion at UFC 78, but was forced to withdraw due to visa issues.

EliteXC[link]

On April 18, 2008, EliteXC released a press statement citing the signing of Hector Lombard.^[3] His first opponent was scheduled to be Scott Smith in November, but the fight was later canceled after the collapse of the promotion.

Bellator Fighting Championships[link]

On January 6, 2009, it was announced that Hector Lombard signed an exclusive agreement with Bellator Fighting Championships.^[4]

He fought and defeated Virgil Lozano and Damien Stelly to make it to the finals and fight for the first Bellator middleweight championship belt. Lombard defeated Jared Hess via doctor stoppage in the fourth round to win the middleweight title.

Lombard was scheduled to face Paulo Filho in a non-title bout on May 13, 2010 at Bellator 18,^[5] but Filho pulled out of the bout on May 10 due to an alleged visa issue and was replaced by Jay Silva.^[6] Lombard scored the fastest knockout in Bellator history by recording a six second win, surpassing Eddie Sanchez and his ten second KO win over Jay White.

Lombard then faced former NFL player Herbert Goodman in a non-title fight on August 12, 2010 at Bellator 24.^[7] He won the fight via KO (Punches) in the first round.

On October 28, 2010 Lombard went on to defeat Alexander Shlemenko in a 1st season winner vs. a 2nd season winner matchup to retain the Bellator Middleweight Championship at Bellator 34. He was the first man in Bellator history to successfully defend his title belt in any weight division.

Lombard next fought Falaniko Vitale in a non-title bout at Bellator 44.^[8] He won via KO in third round.

As of January 30 his contract with Bellator has expired.

Australian Fighting Championship[link]

Lombard also captured the Inaugural AFC middleweight title when he submitted Jesse Taylor in the second round with a heel hook at Australian Fighting Championship 2. In the first and beginning of the second rounds Lombard used superior strength to out-grapple Taylor. This victory would extend his winning streak to 24 wins with 1 draw.

Ultimate Fighting Championship[link]

It was confirmed on April 24, 2012 that Hector Lombard had signed with the UFC, thereboy avoiding his Bellator-mandated match with Alexander Shlemenko.^[9]

Lombard is expected to make his UFC debut against Brian Stann on August 4, 2012 at UFC on Fox 4.^[10][11]
