The Lynton and Barnstaple Railway Circa 1935
A 9.5mm black and white silent film showing scenes of The Lynton and Barnstaple Railway in North Devon, England in and around 1935 when it was owned and operated by the Southern Railway. Also to be seen is the last down train over the route on Sunday 29th September 1935, the auction of railway stock and equipment shortly after and finally, footage of the line being dismantled in 1936. Today the railway is slowly being rebuilt by volunteers and replica carriages and locomotives are being constructed. For further details on this fascinating railway, both as it was then and as it is today, please visit the following; www.lynton-rail.co.uk

Lynton - the village above Lynmouth, Devon
Lynton and Lynmouth are connected by a "cliff railway" - Lynton seems peacefully other-worldly after the bustle of Lynmouth below (until the coach came through!). As Lynmouth tends to get the publicity, this is just a sweep of Lynton to help put it on the YouTube map!

Lynton and Lynmouth Cliff Railway
The Lynton and Lynmouth Cliff Railway is a water-powered funicular railway joining the twin towns of Lynton and Lynmouth on the edge of Exmoor National Park, North Devon. Water feeds through pipes from the West Lyn River, over a mile away, into tanks under the floor of the upper car. Each car has a 3182 liter tank mounted between the wheels. Water is discharged from the lower car, until the heavier top car begins to descend, with the speed controlled by a brakeman traveling on each car. Lynton To Lynmouth Cliff Railway
View in HD www.youtube.com Video Produced by Bigwallypants The Soundtrack is Somethings There by Bob Kilgore www.myspace.com Take a ride on the Lynton to Lynmouth Cliff Railway, North Devon, England. The video was recorded on 25th March 2007 Q & A Q: Who designed it? A: George Marks - believed to have been a 'disciple' of Isambard Kingdom Brunel designed the cliff railway. He later became Baron Marks of Woolwich. Q: Who built it? A: The Majority of the funding for the railway was provided by Sir George Newnes, publisher of Tit Bits and The Strand. Sir George had a passion for Lynton & Lynmouth - and recognised the enormous tourism potential. It was this vision which led him to back not only the Cliff Railway, but also Lynton's town Hall (1900) and the main Barnstaple to Lynton Railway (1898). Q: When did it open? A: Work began on the lift construction in 1887. It took less than three years to complete - a remarkable achievement considering the entire excavation relied on manual labour. The lift is now a listed monument and the buildings have been listed to Grade II. Q: Who runs it? A: The inaugural decent was on 9th April 1890 and it has been in operation ever since ... Even during the two World Wars (although on a restricted service). An Act of Parliament formed the Lynmouth & Lynton Lift Company in 1888. A further Act of Parliament gave the company perpetual rights to the water from the Lyn Valley - The railway's extraordinary power source. Q: What is it's length? A ...

Lynton and Barnstaple Steam Railway Autumn Gala Woody Bay 30th September 2012
While holidaying in nearby Lynton and Lynmouth, I visited the railway for the second day of their Autumn gala. Woody Bay station, at just under 1000 feet was the highest station on the former Southern Railway network. The railway opened in 1898 and closed on 29th September 1935. The next day, a Woody bay resident and admirer of the railway, sent a wreath of bronze Chrysanthemums to be placed on the buffer stops at the line's terminus at Barnstaple Town station. The message with it read."Perchance, it is not dead but sleepeth". 77 years later to the day, you can see it is very much alive. The mile of track in use at the moment will soon be added to by another eight miles or so. The longer term aim is to re-open the entire 19 miles from Banstaple to Lynton. The short stretch already gives a taste of the beautiful scenery the line will offer. This is not a pipe dream and I was struck by the very professional set up of the whole thing, so much so, I joined as a member!..Replica locos are in the process of being buit, two original coaches are being restored and civil engineers Arup are on board to asses reinstatement or repair of the line's bridges and track bed ect. Two of the engines seen, "Brittomart" and "Lilla" are visiting from the North Wales Ffestiniog Railway. These are industrial engines that spent thier working lives in Welsh slate quarries. The four original locos that worked the L&B; were much bigger affairs. The Ffestiniog have built a replica called "Lyd" Have a ...

BBC HARDtalk - Lynton Crosby - Political strategist (2/7/12)
Electoral politics is a blood sport and some of the toughest fighters in the game are the campaign strategists who hone and sell their candidates' message. Lynton Crosby is widely regarded as one of the masters of the darker political arts; he ran winning campaigns in his native Australia for former prime minister John Howard. In the UK, he twice helped Boris Johnson win the London Mayor's office. Opponents on the left have accused him of using grubby, divisive methods to further a conservative agenda. Is bare-knuckle politics good for democracy? Credits Interviewed Guest - Lynton Crosby Presenter - Stephen Sackur www.bbc.co.uk

Lynton & Lynmouth Cliff Railway & Flood Memorial Hall October 2012
The unique water powered cliff railway, opened in 1888, was funded by the wealthy London publisher George Newnes who had a holiday home, although it was more of a mansion, high on the hill above the town. He also sponsored the Lynton and Barnstaple Railway, the Southern Railway running in board from the town's closed station can be found in the garden of the Exmoor museum in the town. Newnes also gifted the impressive town hall. The water is captured from the East Lyn river and piped about a mile to the top station, water is let in to a tank below the passenger cabin. When it is time to depart, the operator of the bottom car lets some water out of his tank, which flows into the sea. The then heavier top car pulls the bottom one up. There are other water powered railways in the world but these reuse the same water, pumping it back to the top. At the bottom is the small village of Lynmouth which was devastated by a flood on 15th August 1952. An incredible 9 inches of rain had fallen on Exmoor during the previous 24 hours. Water, boulders and mud, surged down the East and West Lyn rivers which meet at Lynmouth. 34 lives were lost, some in surrounding villages and settlements

Donna Lynton - If I Never Sing Another Song
In my heyday Young men wrote to me Everybody seemed to have time to devote to me Everyone I saw all swore they knew me Once upon a song Main attraction, couldn't buy a seat The celebrity, celebrities were dying to meet I've had every accolade bestowed on me And so you see If I never sing another song It wouldn't bother me I had my share of fame You know my name If I never sing another song Or take another bow I would get by, but I'm not sure how Always posing, but you love it all Though you have to learn to act like you're above it all Everything I did the world applauded Once upon a star Framed citations, hung on every wall Got a scrapbook full of quotes, I can recall them all There were times I felt the world belonged to me And so you see If I never sing another song It wouldn't bother me I had my share of fame You know my name If I never sing another song Or take another bow I would get by, but I'm not sure how But I'm not sure how But I'm not sure how
