Yesterday two friends of East Jesus stopped by to visit. As they pulled up, I noticed they had some kind of strange device attached to the top of their car. It turned out to be what they called a Rail Rider, basically a self-built go kart specially designed to run on abandoned railroad tracks. I've seen a few of these vehicles online, but they were all pedal powered. This one was powered by a Honda motor, and boasted speeds of up to 30 mph. Greg and Troy were nice enough to take me along on their adventure the next day. While we didn't get to go as high up into the mountains as we'd hoped (no train tunnels -- dang!), it still made for an excellent adventure, and I can't thank them enough for helping me knock one more item off my bucket list. Dinosaur Tracks in Texas

Dinosaur tracks, 113 million years old, can be seen at Dinosaur State Park, near Glen Rose, Texas. Few people actually see the tracks because the water must be low. The best time to see them is in August when it is very hot. The trackway dates to the Cretaceous period and was an important clue for paleontological theories about how and where dinosaurs walked. The riverbed tracks are only visible when the water is low. I arrived early in the morning when it was still cool. The water was and the stream, the Paluxy River, was very low. All the tracks were visible. The site was once an ancient beach. Were the dinosaurs frolicking on the beach? Not likely. It is possible to imagine that the tracks showed that a three-toed meat eater was stalking a plant eater.

This led us to the creation of a cool hip hop/classical mash-up, but again we could not get permission. Instead of scrapping the great ideas, we used them to create an original tune. You will hear influences and inspiration from other artists. Try and guess them. On the recording, Steven Sharp Nelson laid down over 100 tracks including cello textures never known possible. Every single sound on the video was made using only the instruments shown: piano, cello, mouth percussion and kick drum. We utilized some cool effects on lots of stuff...for example the U2-style delay on Steve's pizzicato at the beginning. The extra string on the electric cellos (the black cello has an extra high string and the white cello has an extra low string) allowed us to cover the full range of the orchestra. The deep bass drum sound is a bump on the body of the cello with a little help from some effects. The shaker sound was created by Steve rubbing rosin on his bow. The record scratch is Steve scratching a quarter on the strings...you get the idea. This railroad track is CUT OFF from this other pair of railroad tracks which itself is still active. This abandoned railroad track then divides into two track with one disappearing within the weeds and apparently ends at this water tower and the other track reaching Forest Park. This abandoned railroad track stretches from North Riverside to Forest Park in Illinois.

Metro Kids English / Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority (Metro). A rail safety video presented by Los Angeles Metro, "Tracks are for Trains" is meant for young children below the age of 10. Focusing on the Metro Blue Line and Metro Gold Line at street level, the video was developed to assist in train-the-trainer programs after partnerships were formed with 10 school districts along Metro rail lines. It features Metro Rail's former Rail Executive Gerald Francis. The video has won 11 national awards: The Aurora Awards—Three Platinum Best of Show awards for Directing, Use of Music, and Public Service and one Gold Award for original music; Five Finalist Awards from the international Telly Awards; and a World Gold Medal from the prestigious New York Festivals against competition from 58 countries. Additionally, the video won a First Place Award from APTA.
