Fernando Corena (December 22, 1916 - November 26, 1984) was a Turkish-Swiss bass who had a major international opera career from the late 1940s through the early 1980s. He enjoyed a long and successful career at the Metropolitan Opera between 1954 and 1978, and was a regular presence at the Vienna State Opera between 1963 and 1981. His repertoire encompassed both dramatic and comic roles in leading and secondary parts, mainly within Italian opera. He was highly regarded for his performances of opera buffa characters and is generally considered one of the greatest basso buffos of the post-war era. He was heralded as the true successor to comic Italian bass Salvatore Baccaloni, and in 1966 Harold C. The mini-series of uploads from Wallberg's recordings of Donizetti's two great buffo operas continues :)! Adina and Nemorino surprisingly don't actually have a real "suspended-over-time" love duet (similar to, for example, "Tornami a dir"): their first number together narratively follows Adina as she gently pokes fun of Nemorino's sentimental outpourings; while their second duet, a part of the first Finale, finds both characters a bit angry and confused, so no love duettino there. Only in Adina's aria or, to be more precise, its' cabaletta do we get close to the traditional love scene. But the whole thing works without any obligatory nocturnal duettino. The first duet is quite unconventional, mainly due to the fact that it skips the central andante and, after the characters' statements, plunges straight into an impassioned but slowly moving stretta. The music is touching throughout: especially charming are the final two sections ("si, si, si/no, no, no" and the succeeding section) leading up to the climatic Cs from both characters. Lucia Popp and Peter Dvorsky seems to me almost perfect as, respectively, Adina and Nemorino :). Enjoy :)! Your comments will be appreciated.

Heidi Grant Murphy sings L'Elisir d'amore

The finale proper begins with Gianetta's entrance with a letter from Belcore's commander (talk about dramatical messenger; plus, the music is brilliantly "runny" in the strings). Belcore and his men are to leave the very next morning. But that doesn't really stop Adina who (and that's the second part of the all-important-event) announces that she will marry Belcore immediately which causes Nemorino great distress (plus, the wine has gotten out of his system a bit). The next section is the iconic "suspension-over-time": Nemorino's gentle, sighing, elegant line is contrasted with Belcore's and Adina's laughing, mocking short phrases (the soprano only joins the tenor's line for her two last couplets as she laments the loss of all possible hope of marrying Nemorino). Finally, time returns as all except Nemorino (and, secretly, Adina) rejoice at the news of the upcoming news; Nemorino is pushed aside with only his cries of "doctor! doctor!" audible. And that's the Act One Finale :)! Peter Dvorsky, Lucia Popp, Bernd Weikl are joined by the Gianetta of Judith Hobarth. Hope you enjoyed it :)! The next piece, Adina's big aria is coming soon.

This new mini-series (three in total) of uploads is dedicated to something of a most pleasant enigma of the musical world: two people, a married couple, who can be considered one of the truly best and complementary singing partnerships in the twentieth century. Both of French-Canadian heritage, both possessors of light, lyric voices of excellent technique; both most suited to classicist works of the 18th century; both extremely lovely people. I'm talking, of course, of Leopold Simoneau and Pierrette Alarie. Their recordings, both presented and available in other sources, testify to a personal and artistic relationship that can only be properly described as "the perfect vocal marriage". As an additional point of interest, I'm providing a short biography of Simoneau, the male part of the duo. Tenor, pefagogue and administrator, Simoneau studied at Levis College and Laval University before continuing voice studies in Montréal with Salvator Issaurel. There he met Pierrette Alarie. A year later he won the Prix Archambault; this led to studies in New York in 1945. He and Pierrette were married in 1946. He moved with his wife to Paris in 1949 to make their debuts at the Opéra Comique. The couple's reputation continued to grow following appearances at the Aix-en-Provence, Edinburgh, Glyndebourne, Vienna, Munich and Salzburg Festivals. Recently I acquired another two recordings of Donizetti's "Don Pasquale" and "L'elisir d'amore" into my collection. Both these pieces are well-known and don't need any kind of introduction. Saying that the works have received numerous recordings would be a very big understatement: according to one of the best sites for discographies, operadis-opera-discography.org.uk, there are, respectively, 62 and 77 recordings of the operas. I have several recordings of the operas with which I am pretty happy: Abbado's recording of "Don Pasquale" with Allen, Mei, Lopardo and Scimone's "L'elisir" with Carreras, Ricciarelli, Trimarchi and Nucci would have to be the highlights... At least, they were before I bought the two new ones. Heinz Wallberg was a German conductor. He became principal music director in Augsburg in 1954, and in Bremen in 1955, concluding in both posts in 1960. From 1964 to 1975, Wallberg was principal conductor of the Tonkünstler Orchestra, Vienna. He held the same post with the Munich Radio Orchestra from 1975 to 1982, and with the Essen Philharmonic from 1975 to 1991. From what I managed to read on him, most of his recordings are set firmly in Wagnerian operas and verisimo. And yet, in 1979 and in 1984, with the help of Bavaria Radio and BMG Music, he recorded Donizetti's comic masterpieces (in the order already given at the beginning)... One would imagine that the recordings are bound to be heavy, over-emphasized affairs... They aren't even close to these <b>...</b>

In Italian opera the Act One Finale seems to be the most important part of the whole evening: something very important is bound to happen just before or during the finale, so the whole finale is usually either devoted to something crucial happening between the main characters, to characters reacting to the event or, in some cases, to both things at the same time. Moreover, the emotions usual run very high with lower voices snarling effectively, sopranos and tenors brandishing high Cs and coloratura roulandes, the chorus and comprimarios confused, at best. The First Act Finale to "L'elisir d'amore" really isn't s break of traditon but it can claim fully its' originality of form and of music :)! Despite concert and recording practices, the present finale is actually formed out of three almost independent numbers (but they are connected into a cohesive whole): Adina's and Nemorino's second duet; the subsequent terzettino with Belcore and the finale proper (complete with the traditional "scene - andante - allegro" structure). The duettino starts after a short scene as Nemorino tries to make Adina believe that he is uninterested with her, while the latter is a bit shocked to see her faithful follower turn away from her. A classical contrasting succession of "andante - allegro" is made interesting by the fact that both movements use the same words to show the changing emotions of the characters: Adina is at first unable to understand the sudden change in Nemorino's behavior but <b>...</b>

Una furtiva lagrima (A furtive tear) is the romanza from Act II, Scene 2 of the Italian opera, L'elisir d'amore (The Elixir of Love) by Gaetano Donizetti. It is sung by Nemorino (Caruso) when he finds that the love potion he bought to win his dream lady's heart, Adina, works. Nemorino is in love with Adina, but she isn't interested in a relationship with an innocent, rustic man. To win her heart, Nemorino buys a "love potion" with all the money he has in his pocket. The "love potion" is actually a cheap red wine sold by a con business traveler. But when he sees Adina weeping, he knows that she has fallen in love with him and the "Elixir" works. Caruso created the role of Nemorino the first time in February 1901 at La Scala in Milan. The conductor was the famous Toscanini, but the notoriously critical and reserved audience of La Scala did not react at all ... until Caruso started singing - and he basically turned the performance from failure to success. The audience went wild and Caruso was compelled to repeat "Una furtiva lagrima" three times. L'elisir d'amore is one of the most frequently performed of all Donizetti's operas, and there are a number of recordings. It appears as number 12 on the Operabase list of the most-performed operas worldwide. It contains the popular aria "Una furtiva lagrima," one of the most famous and often-excerpted arias in all of opera.

The opening of this comic opera finds Nemorino, a poor peasant, in love with Adina, a beautiful landowner, who torments Nemorino with her indifference. When Nemorino hears Adina reading to her workers the story of Tristan and Isolde, he is convinced that a magic potion will gain Adina's love for him. He is afraid she loves the self-important Sergeant Belcore who appears with his regiment and immediately proposes marriage to Adina in front of everyone. The traveling quack salesman, Dulcamara (the self-proclaimed Dr. Encyclopedia), arrives, selling his bottled cure-all to the townspeople. Nemorino innocently asks Dulcamara if he has anything like Isolde's love potion. Dulcamara says he does, selling it to Nemorino at a price matching the contents of Nemorino's pockets.), an itinerant quack and purveyor of "elixirs" and other tonics, gestures to "Cochise" (Bruce Cooper), his sly trumpet playing assistant, to call together the townspeople as he sings his Act 1 (Scene 2) aria "Udite, udite, o rustici" ("Hear me, hear me, oh peasants") in a performance of the Cincinnati Opera's noted 1968 "Wild West" production of L'Elisir d'Amore in which the 1832 opera's setting was moved from a village in the Basque country to 1870s Texas.]]Unknown to Nemorino, the bottle contains only wine. And, in order to make a timely escape, Dulcamara tells Nemorino the potion will not take effect until the next day. Nemorino drinks it, feeling its effects immediately. Emboldened by the 'elixir' Nemorino encounters Adina, and although she teases him mercilessly, the audience senses that the attraction just might be mutual, were it not for the marriage proposal of the impressive and pompous sergeant. In fact, their wedding date had been set for six days hence. Nemorino's confidence that tomorrow he will win Adina by virtue of the elixir, causes him to act indifferently toward her. This upsets Adina, but she attempts to hide her feelings. Instead, she ups the ante as well by agreeing to Sergeant Belcore's alternate suggestion: that they marry immediately as he has just received orders that the regiment must ship off the next morning. Both Adina and the Sergeant gauge Nemorino's reaction to this news, the Sergeant with resentment, Adina with despair. Nemorino is, of course panicked, and cries out for Doctor Dulcamara to come to his aid.
Act 2
Adina's outdoor wedding party is in full swing. Dr. Dulcamara is there, and performs a song with Adina to entertain the guests. The notary arrives to make the marriage official. Adina is sad to see that Nemorino has not appeared. Everyone goes inside to sign the wedding contract. But Dulcamara stays outside, helping himself to food and drink. Nemorino appears, having seen the notary, realizes that he has lost Adina. He sees the Doctor and frantically begs him for more elixir, of the type that will work immediately. But because Nemorino has no money, the Doctor refuses, disappearing inside. The Sergeant emerges, alone, wondering aloud why Adina has suddenly put off the wedding and the signing of the contract. Nemorino spots his rival, but is powerless to do anything. The Sergeant asks about Nemorino's dejection. When Nemorino says he has no money Belcore immediately suggests that if he joins the army he'll be paid immediately. He produces a contract, which Nemorino signs (with an X) in return for the cash Belcore gives him on the spot. Nemorino privately vows to fly to Dulcamara for more potion, while Belcore muses that he has easily dispatched of his rival by sending him off to war.Later that evening the women of the village are gossiping that Nemorino is unaware that he has just inherited a large fortune from his deceased uncle. They spot Nemorino, who has clearly spent his military signing bonus, and has bought and consumed a large amount of 'elixir' (wine again) from Dr. Dulcamara. The women approach Nemorino with overly friendly greetings, the likes of which he has never seen. This is proof to Nemorino that this dose of the elixir has worked. Adina sees Nemorino in a jolly mood and, encountering Dr. Dulcamara, wonders what has gotten into him. Dulcamara, unaware that Adina is the object of Nemorino's affection, tells her the story of the smitten bumpkin who spent his last penny on the elixir, and even signed his life away, joining the army for money to get more, so desperate was he to win the love of some unnamed cruel beauty. Adina immediately realizes Nemorino's sincerity, and regrets teasing him. She falls for Nemorino, basking in the sincerity of his love. Dulcamara interprets this behavior as some sort of condition requiring a cure by one of his potions.
{|align=right | |} They depart. Nemorino appears alone, pensive, reflecting on a tear he saw in Adina's eye when he was ignoring her earlier. Based on that tear alone, he is sincerely convinced that Adina loves him. She enters, asking him why he has chosen to join the army and leave the town. When Nemorino says he's seeking a better life, Adina responds by telling him he is loved, and that she has purchased his military contract from Sergeant Belcore. She offers the cancelled contract to Nemorino, asking him to take it. He is free now. She says, however, that if he stays, he will no longer be sad. As he takes the contract Adina turns to leave. Nemorino believes she is abandoning him and flies in to a desperate fit, vowing that if he is not loved, if the elixir has not worked, and the Doctor has fooled him, then he might as well go off and die a soldier. Adina stops him and confesses that she loves him. Nemorino is ecstatic. Adina begs him to forgive her for teasing him. He does so with a kiss. The sergeant returns, seeing the two in an embrace. Adina explains that she loves Nemorino. The Sergeant takes the news in stride, noting that there are plenty of other women in the world. Dulcamara, his bags packed, pops out of a doorway, adding that he will happily provide elixir for the Sergeant's next conquest. A crowd has gathered by now, all agreeing that the elixir has done its job as they bid a fond farewell to the doctor.
