Financially strapped Afghan farmers cultivate poppies for heroin.

Full Story:

April is the traditional poppy-harvesting season in Afghanistan\'s Helmand Province.

Financially strapped Afghan farmers are continuing to cultivate the deadly source of opium and heroin as the UN admits defeat in its attempts to encourage them to grow other, legal crops.

Afghanistan supplies about 90 percent of the world\'s opium, from which heroin is made.

There is a foreign-funded scheme attempting to wean farmers off growing poppies by offering incentives such as subsidized seeds and fertilizer to grow legal crops.

But this local farmer says without the extra income from poppies, he can\'t feed himself or his family.

And the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime said the international community and Afghan government had failed in its attempts to tackle Afghanistan\'s drug problem.

Disappearing Arctic Sea Ice - Melting Polar Ice Cap | Earth Science Footage Video
Arctic Sea Ice Max is 5th-Lowest on Record - This animation shows the seasonal change in the extent of the Arctic sea ice between March 1, 2012 and February 28, 2013. The annual cycle starts with the maximum extent reached on March 15, 2012. Every summer the Arctic ice cap melts down to its minimum extent before colder weather builds the ice cover back up. This new ice generated on an annual basis is called \'first-year\' ice and is thinner than the older sea ice. The perennial ice is the portion of the ice cap that spans multiple years and represents its thickest component. On September 13, 2012, the sea ice minimum covered 3.439 million square kilometers, that is down by more than 3.571 million square kilometers from the high of 7.011 million square kilometers measured in 1980. The annual maximum extent for 2013 reached on February 28 reached an extent of 15.09 million square kilometers.

World Scientists Urge Key Actions for Achieving Food Security in a Changing Climate http://ccafs.cgiar.org/commission/reports/

To achieve food security in a changing climate, the global community must operate within three limits: the quantity of food that can be produced under a given climate; the quantity needed by a growing and changing population; and the effect of food production on the climate. At present the planet operates outside that safe space, as witnessed by the enormous number of people who are undernourished. If current trends in population growth, diets, crop yields and climate change continue, the world will still be outside this \'safe operating space\' in 2050. Humanity must urgently work to enlarge the safe space and also move the planet into the safe space. The Commission on Sustainable Agriculture and Climate Change has a produced a set of concrete policy actions to transform the food system.

http://www.euronews.com/ U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry is in Beijing as part of his four day East Asia tour. Along with strengthening relations between the United States and China, he will also discuss the deepening Korean Peninsula Crisis.

Kerry hopes to persuade China\'s top leaders to put pressure on North Korea to scale back its rhetoric and eventually return to talks over it nuclear programme.

While John Kerry holds talks in China, NATO General Anders Fogh Rasmussen has visited the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) that divides North and South Korea. This is his first visit to the area since taking office.

It is hoped that China can help to reach a solution to the crisis because of its unique position as Pyongyang\'s main trading partner, financial backer and diplomatic ally. However, the country has been reluctant to put pressure on Pyongyang fearing the instability that could come with the end of the regime.

Financially strapped Afghan farmers cultivate poppies for heroin. Full Story: April is the traditional poppy-harvesting season in Afghanistan's Helmand Province. Financially strapped Afghan farmers are continuing to cultivate the deadly source of opium and heroin as the UN admits defeat in its attempts to encourage them to grow other, legal crops. Afghanistan supplies about 90 percent of the world's opium, from which heroin is made. There is a foreign-funded scheme attempting to wean farmers off growing poppies by offering incentives such as subsidized seeds and fertilizer to grow legal crops. But this local farmer says without the extra income from poppies, he can't feed himself or his family. And the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime said the international community and Afghan government had failed in its attempts to tackle Afghanistan's drug problem. [Jean-Luc Lemahieu, United Nations Office On Drugs And Crime Country Representative]: "We have seen enormous inflow in this country over the last decades, and with regards to the drug control situation, we still see increases of the opium cultivation, so we cannot say in any way, based on the facts, that we have succeeded. We have failed." The country's drug trade lines insurgents' pockets with more than $100 million U.S. dollars annually and is earning traffickers billions more. The judge in the retrial of former Egyptian president Hosni Mubarak has withdrawn from the case and referred it to another court, abruptly ending the first session on Saturday. Judge Mustafa Hassan Abdullah announced his decision at the start of the retrial at a police academy on the outskirts of Cairo, where the 84-year old former president had earlier been flown in by a helicopter. The judge said he had decided to refer the case to the Cairo appeals court as he felt "unease" in reviewing the case. Protests and clashes erupted both inside and outside the courtroom as the judge made his announcement. Mubarak is facing retrial on charges of complicity in the murder of protesters killed in the uprising that unseated him. Mubarak, wearing brown-tinted glasses, waved from inside the courtroom cage in his court appearance. He was airlifted to the court from a Cairo hospital. His two sons and former interior minister, currently held in prison for separate cases, were also in the courtroom cage. Mubarak, his interior minister Habib al-Adly and six security chiefs are in the dock again facing these charges. The toppled despot's sons Gamal and Alaa -- once symbols of power and wealth -- will also be retried on corruption charges. Another defendant, business tycoon Hussein Salem, is being tried in absentia. Three thousand soldiers and police officers were deployed to secure the court, in addition to 150 armored vehicles, Interior Minister Mohamed Ibrahim said, according to news site Egypt Independent.

World Scientists Urge Key Actions for Achieving Food Security in a Changing Climate http://ccafs.cgiar.org/commission/reports/ To achieve food security in a changing climate, the global community must operate within three limits: the quantity of food that can be produced under a given climate; the quantity needed by a growing and changing population; and the effect of food production on the climate. At present the planet operates outside that safe space, as witnessed by the enormous number of people who are undernourished. If current trends in population growth, diets, crop yields and climate change continue, the world will still be outside this 'safe operating space' in 2050. Humanity must urgently work to enlarge the safe space and also move the planet into the safe space. The Commission on Sustainable Agriculture and Climate Change has a produced a set of concrete policy actions to transform the food system. This is his first visit to the area since taking office. It is hoped that China can help to reach a solution to the crisis because of its unique position as Pyongyang's main trading partner, financial backer and diplomatic ally. However, the country has been reluctant to put pressure on Pyongyang fearing the instability that could come with the end of the regime. Court clashes erupt after judge in Mubarak retrial withdraws
Court clashes erupt after judge in Mubarak retrial withdraws
