Helmsdale

Helmsdale (Scots: Helmsdal,Scottish Gaelic: Bun Ilidh) is a village on the east coast of Sutherland, in the Highland council area of Scotland. The modern village was planned in 1814 to resettle communities that had been removed from the surrounding straths as part of the Highland Clearances.
Helmsdale is a fishing port at the estuary of the River Helmsdale, and was once the home of one of the largest herring fleets in Europe. The river itself is well known for its fishing. West Helmsdale lies across the river from the main village above the railway station; Old Helmsdale is immediately to the north while East Helmsdale is a settlement less than a mile to the east.
The village is on the A9 road, at a junction with the A897, and has a railway station on the Far North Line. Facilities include an independent youth hostel, a heritage centre, an art gallery, and an inn.
Helmsdale river, (Gaelic Ilidh), is noted by Ptolemy as Ila, which remains an obscure name. The Gaelic name for the village, Bun Ilidh, means Ilie-foot. Norse settlers called the strath Hjalmundal, meaning Dale of the Helmet, from which the modern village name Helmsdale is derived.

River Helmsdale
The River Helmsdale (sometimes known as the River Ullie) is one of the major east-flowing rivers of Sutherland in the Highlands of Scotland. It flows broadly southeastwards from Loch Badanloch down the Strath of Kildonan (otherwise known as Strath Ullie), gathering the waters of the Bannock Burn on its left and the Abhainn na Frithe on its right before discharging into the Moray Firth on the North Sea at the town of Helmsdale. Other significant tributaries of the Helmsdale include the left-bank Suisgill Burn and the right-bank Craggie Water. Loch Achnamoine which is just over 1km in length, lies on the line of the river 1 mi / 1.5km downstream of Loch Badanloch. Loch Badanloch is one of a complex of three interconnecting lochs - the other two being Loch nan Clàr and Loch Rimsdale which gather waters from the moors on the southern edge of the Flow Country via the Allt an Lòin Tharsuinn, Allt Lòn a' Chùil and Rimsdale Burn.

Sutherland
Sutherland is a registration county, lieutenancy area and former county of Scotland. It is now within the Highland council area. In Gaelic the area is referred to according to its traditional areas: Dùthaich Mhic Aoidh (or Dùthaich 'Ic Aoidh) (NW), Asainte (Assynt), and Cataibh (East). However, Cataibh will often be used to refer to the area as a whole.
The county town, and only burgh of the county, was Dornoch. Other settlements include Bonar Bridge, Lairg, Brora, Durness, Embo, Tongue, Golspie, Helmsdale, Lochinver, Scourie and Kinlochbervie.
Sutherland became a local government area in 1890, and the county was abolished in 1975, when the Sutherland district was created as one of eight districts of the Highland Region. The region was created at the same time as the district. The district was abolished in 1996, when the region became a council area.
The name Sutherland dates from the era of Norse rule and settlement over much of the Highlands and Islands, under the rule of the jarl of Orkney. Although it contains some of the northernmost land in the island of Great Britain, it was called Suðrland ("southern land") from the standpoint of Orkney and Caithness.

Earl of Sutherland
Earl of Sutherland is a title in the Peerage of Scotland. It was created circa 1230 for William de Moravia. The Earl of Sutherland is also the Chief of Clan Sutherland. The original line were known by the surname "de Moravia", who were also considered the senior line of the Clan Murray.
Elizabeth, Countess of Sutherland, married Adam Gordon, whose surname belonged to several of the next Earls of Sutherland. The title was again held by a long string of men, until the death of William Gordon, 18th Earl, without sons, when the title passed to his daughter Elizabeth.
Elizabeth, 19th Countess of Sutherland then married George Granville Leveson-Gower in 1785; he inherited the title of Marquess of Stafford from his father in 1803. The Marquess held vast lands and wealth, having inherited from his father, the first Marquess of Stafford, from his maternal uncle, the second Duke of Bridgewater, and also holding much property associated with the Earldom of Sutherland, which belonged to his wife. He was made Duke of Sutherland in 1833.

Norsemen
Norsemen is used to refer to the group of people as a whole who spoke what is now called the Old Norse language belonging to the North Germanic branch of Indo-European languages, especially Norwegian, Icelandic, Faroese, Swedish and Danish in their earlier forms.
The meaning of Norseman was "people from the North" and was applied primarily to Nordic people originating from southern and central[citation needed]Scandinavia. They established states and settlements in areas which today are part of the Faroe Islands, England, Scotland, Wales, Iceland, Finland, Ireland, Russia, Canada, Greenland, France, Ukraine, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, and Germany.

Thomas Telford
Thomas Telford FRS, FRSE (1757–1834) was a Scottish civil engineer, architect and stonemason, and a noted road, bridge and canal builder.
Telford was born on 9 August 1757 at Glendinning, a hill farm 3 miles west of Eskdalemuir Kirk, in the rural parish of Westerkirk, in Eskdale, Dumfriesshire. His father John Telford, a shepherd, died soon after Thomas was born. Thomas was raised in poverty by his mother Janet Jackson (d.1794).
At the age of 14 he was apprenticed to a stonemason, and some of his earliest work can still be seen on the bridge across the River Esk in Langholm in the Scottish borders. He worked for a time in Edinburgh and in 1782 he moved to London where (after meeting architects Robert Adam and Sir William Chambers) he was involved in building additions to Somerset House there. Two years later he found work at Portsmouth dockyard and — although still largely self-taught — was extending his talents to the specification, design and management of building projects.
In 1787, through his wealthy patron William Pulteney, he became Surveyor of Public Works in Shropshire. Civil engineering was a discipline still in its infancy, so Telford was set on establishing himself as an architect. His projects included renovation of Shrewsbury Castle, the town's prison (during the planning of which he met leading prison reformer John Howard), the Church of St. Mary Magdalene, Bridgnorth and another church in Madeley. (Called in to advise on a leaking roof at St Chad's Church Shrewsbury in 1788, he correctly warned the church was in imminent danger of collapse; his reputation was made locally when it collapsed 3 days later, but he was not the architect for its replacement).

Christine Cowie, is a local lass born in Old Caithness Road into the well known and respected Mackay fishing family. Christine has spent her whole life in Education teaching across all sectors from Primary and Secondary to Further and Higher Education latterly. She graduated Bachelor of Science in Chemistry and Mathematics from the University of Aberdeen 1967 and holds postgraduate qualifications in Health Education, Education Industry Links, Guidance and Counselling, a Higher National Diploma in Professional Development and is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy. She was Assistant Head Teacher at Golspie High School before joining the University of the Highlands and Islands as a Maths Lecturer where she has worked at the North Highland College, Thurso, for the past 13 years. Away from her professional duties she has been a committed and active member of the Helmsdale Bunillidh Church of Scotland, is a member of the Session Board, Singing Group, convener of the Ladies Fellowship and Fabric Convener amongst other roles. She is also a member of the board of Timespan Heritage and Arts Centre and is an enthusiastic member of the Heritage and Fund Raising Committees there. She also serves on the Helmsdale Medical Equipment Committee. Christine enjoys spending time with her family, growing flowers, vegetables and fruit in her polytunnel, enjoying time at their cabin caring for her herd of pet deer and the rest of her time is spent attending meetings. Sir Michael Wigan formally opened the 2011 season on the River Helmsdale, Sutherland on Thursday 13th January, along with Icelandic guest Orri Vigfusson, Chairman of the North Atlantic Salmon Fund. Three-times world Spey casting champion Scott Mackenzie gave an impressive demonstration to an enthusiastic crowd on Kilphedir Pool, Beat 1 and hooked and released a grilse kelt during the casting session. Anglers were given tuition by Scott and Ron Sutherland of Helmsdale Tackle, using the latest rod designs from Scott's new range of fly rods. The statutory season starts from January 11th, and the first fish was taken on opening day by Torrish Estate's gamekeeper, Richard Bain, a fine fresh-run 8 pound springer, carefully released after photographing. With such an early start and the record catches in the north last season, the hope is that there will be a continued improvement in early spring runs this year. Mike Shepley

Helmsdale (Scots: Helmsdal,[1] Scottish Gaelic: Bun Ilidh)[2] is a village on the east coast of Sutherland, in the Highland council area of Scotland. The modern village was planned in 1814 to resettle communities that had been removed from the surrounding straths as part of the Highland Clearances.
Helmsdale is a fishing port at the estuary of the River Helmsdale, and was once the home of one of the largest herring fleets in Europe. The river itself is well known for its fishing. West Helmsdale lies across the river from the main village above the railway station; Old Helmsdale is immediately to the north while East Helmsdale is a settlement less than a mile to the east.
The village is on the A9 road, at a junction with the A897, and has a railway station on the Far North Line. Facilities include an independent youth hostel, a heritage centre, an art gallery, and an inn.

Toponymy[link]
Helmsdale river, (Gaelic Ilidh), is noted by Ptolemy as Ila, which remains an obscure name. The Gaelic name for the village, Bun Ilidh, means Ilie-foot. Norse settlers called the strath Hjalmundal, meaning Dale of the Helmet, from which the modern village name Helmsdale is derived.
Culture and sports[link]
Helmsdale is famous for its Highland Games which are always the 3rd Saturday in August. Best known is the evening Marquee Dance where the village population of 700 more than doubles thanks to visitors attending the dance.
It is home to Bunillidh Thistle F.C. and Helmsdale United.
History[link]
Helmsdale Castle, the remains of which were demolished in 1970s in order to build the new A9 road bridge, was the location of the murder of the 11th Earl of Sutherland in 1567.[3] The previous bridge, which still stands, was designed by Thomas Telford[4]
The last force-fire in Helmsdale was about 1818.[clarification needed][citation needed]
Gold rush[link]
Two tributaries of the river experienced a gold rush in 1869. The history of Kildonan's gold started in 1818, when a single nugget of gold was found near the Suisgill and Kildonan burns. Scotland ensured its place in the history books late in 1868, when a brief announcement in a local newspaper stated that gold had been discovered at Kildonan in the county of Sutherland. The credit for the discovery goes to Robert Nelson Gilchrist, a native of Kildonan, who had spent 17 years in the goldfields of Australia. On his return home, he was given the permission by the Duke of Sutherland to pan the gravels of the Helmsdale River and he prospected all the burns and tributaries.[5]
World War II[link]
During World War II, the Royal Air Force built Loth Chain Home radar station at Crakaig a few miles South West of Helmsdale. There was also an RAF Chain Home Low radar station Navidale about a mile North East of Helmsdale. During the Cold War there was a Composite Signals Organisation radio monitoring station in Helmsdale itself, the CSO is associated with GCHQ.
New developments[link]
The Highlands and Islands Council announced on 3 August 2008 plans to modernise and catalyse industry in Helmsdale and its surrounding areas, this included a £3.5 million re-vamp of the harbour and the development of two battery processing factories. Work on the harbour is set to begin in Spring 2009 while the battery plants are expected to open before May 2009. It is hoped up to 50 new jobs will be created.
