Rudy Movie - Trailer (1993) Football
Daniel Eugene "Rudy" Ruettiger grows up in Joliet, Illinois; dreaming of playing college football at the University of Notre Dame. While achieving some success with his local high school team (Joliet Catholic), he lacks the grades and money to attend Notre Dame, not to mention talent and physical size. Ruettiger was much smaller than an average football player, standing just 5'6" (1.68 m) and weighing 165 lb (75 kg).
Ruettiger takes a job at a local steel mill like his father Daniel, Sr. (a Notre Dame fan); he prepares to settle down. But when his best friend Pete is killed in an explosion there, Rudy decides to follow his dream of attending Notre Dame and playing for the Fighting Irish.
He leaves for the campus, but fails to get admitted to Notre Dame. With the help of a local priest (who mistakenly thinks at first Rudy wants to become a priest), Rudy starts at a small junior college nearby named Holy Cross, hoping to qualify for a transfer. He also manages to get a part-time job on Notre Dame's groundskeeping staff and befriends D-Bob, a graduate student at Notre Dame and a teaching assistant at his junior college. The socially-awkward D-Bob offers to tutor Rudy if he helps him meet girls. Suspecting an underlying cause to Ruettiger's previous academic problems, D-Bob has Rudy tested, and Rudy learns that he has dyslexia. Rudy learns how to overcome his disability and becomes a better student. At Christmas vacation, Rudy returns home to his family's appreciation of his report card, but is still mocked for his attempts at playing football and also dumped by his girlfriend, who starts seeing one of his brothers.
During his final semester of transfer eligibility, Rudy is admitted to Notre Dame. He rushes home to tell his family. At the steel mill, his father announces it over the loudspeaker, "Hey, you guys, my son's going to Notre Dame!" After "walking on" as a non-scholarship player for the football team, Ruettiger convinces coach Ara Parseghian to give him a spot on the practice (or "scout") squad. An assistant coach warns the players that 35 scholarship players won't make the roster. But, Ruettiger exhibits more drive than some of his scholarship teammates.
Parseghian agrees to the young man's request to suit up for one home game in his senior year so his family and friends can see him as a member of the team. However, Parseghian steps down as coach following the 1974 season. Dan Devine succeeds him in 1975 and decides against giving Ruettiger a chance to appear at a home game. Led by team captain and All-American Roland Steele, the other seniors rise to his defense and lay their jerseys on Devine's desk, each requesting that Rudy be allowed to dress in their place. Devine relents and lets Ruettiger suit up for the final home game, against Georgia Tech.
At the final home game, Steele invites Ruettiger to lead the team out of the tunnel onto the playing field. As the game comes to an end, and Notre Dame is ahead, Devine sends all the seniors to the field, but refuses to let Rudy play, despite the pleas from Steele and the assistant coaches. Then, the Notre Dame bench starts a "Rudy!" chant that soon goes stadium wide, and the offensive team, led by tailback Jamie O'Hare, overrules Devine's call for victory formation and they score another touchdown instead. Devine finally lets Rudy enter the field with the defensive team on the final kickoff. He stays in for the final play of the game and sacks the opposing quarterback, and is carried off on the shoulders of his teammates.

Film Description: A young man learns to let nothing stop him from realizing his ambitions in this drama, based on a true story. Ever since he was a little boy, Rudy Ruettiger (Sean Astin) has dreamed of attending Notre Dame University, and playing on the Fighting Irish football team. However, Rudy's dream doesn't seem very practical; Daniel (Ned Beatty), his father, works in a steel mill and can ill afford to send his son to Notre Dame, while Rudy's grades are not especially impressive, and standing a shade over five feet tall and weighing a little over 100 pounds, Rudy is hardly built for the gridiron. However, with the help of Father Cavanaugh (Robert Prosky), a sympathetic priest, Rudy is admitted to nearby Holy Cross, and in his junior year manages to squeak into Notre Dame as a transfer student. Rudy works as an assistant to the football stadium's groundskeeper, Fortune (Charles S. Dutton), to pay his tuition (often sleeping in Fortune's office since he can't afford a room), studies diligently, and appears at tryouts for the football team. Rudy is made a member of the practice team, which means he's little more than a human tackling dummy, but Coach Ara Parseghian (Jason Miller) is impressed with Rudy's devotion and determination, and pledges that he'll allow him to dress for one game before he graduates, so his name can be recorded as an official member of the team. However, the arrival of a new coach and a tough season that allows for few unnecessary players may put a stop to Rudy's dreams within sight of the finish line. Rudy also stars Jon Favreau, Lili Taylor, and Scott Benjaminson.

Rudy Movie The Real Story Rudy Ruettiger Sean Astin
http://www.rudyinternational.com
Rudy is a 1993 American sports film directed by David Anspaugh. It is an account of the life of Daniel "Rudy" Ruettiger, who harbored dreams of playing football at the University of Notre Dame despite significant obstacles. It was the first movie which the Notre Dame administration allowed to be shot on campus since Knute Rockne, All American in 1940.
In 2005, Rudy was named one of the best 25 sports movies of the previous 25 years in two polls by ESPN (#24 by a panel of sports experts, and #4 by espn.com users).[1] It was ranked the 54th-most inspiring film of all time in the "AFI 100 Years" series.[2]
The film was released on October 13, 1993, by TriStar Pictures. It stars Sean Astin as the title character, along with Ned Beatty, Jason Miller and Charles S. Dutton. The script was written by Angelo Pizzo, who created Hoosiers (1986). The film was shot in Illinois and Indiana.

TunePlay - RUDY (1993) Jerry Goldsmith
Ladies, there are two genres with a good chance of making your man cry ... at least when no one's around. The inspirational sports film (such as ROCKY, THE NATURAL or BRIAN'S SONG), and those dealing with fathers & sons. Put 'em together as in FIELD OF DREAMS, THE ROOKIE (2002) or HOOSIERS; then stand back, pull on your galoshes, and watch the waterworks commence. Among the best of these "guy tear jerkers" is 1993's RUDY. Cited by both Sports Illustrated and ESPN as one of the "Greatest Sports Films of All Time"; on (count 'em!) two of the American Film Institute's "Top 100" lists ("Most Inspirational" and "Most Heroic"), and a favorite of comediennes ruminating on pent-up male emotions (Whitney Cummings does a hilarious bit), RUDY would emerge, like it's title character, as the "little movie that could". Not a huge hit at the time of it's October '93 release (returning $23 million on a modest $12 mill. budget) it's cult following would grow over the years after repeated cable and network airings as well as numerous VHS, DVD and Blu-Ray re-releases.
RUDY was based on the true story of Daniel "Rudy" Ruettiger, a pint-sized, athletically challenged, Irish-Catholic lad from a lower middle class American steel mill family who, in spite of a less than stellar academic history (he possessed dyslexia - at the time undiagnosed), possessed the heart and soul of a gladiator; that heart leading him to (against all obstacles and common sense) realize a life long dream of not only attending Notre Dame University, but playing on their legendary football team. From the film making duo of director David Anspaugh and writer Angelo Pizzo (the two of whom had collaborated on that earlier seminal male tear-jerker sports film HOOSIERS - 1986), RUDY starred a cast of seasoned character actors including Sean Astin in the title role, Charles S. Dutton, Lili Taylor, Jon Favreau and Vince Vaughn (both their film debuts), Robert Prosky, Jason Miller as legendary "Fighting Irish" coach Ara Parseghian, and Ned Beatty as Rudy's father - who has the climactic line which to this day chokes up every single male throat (father OR son) in the audience.
In addition to Anspaugh and Pizzo, RUDY would also bring composer Jerry Goldsmith back to the HOOSIERS fold. After (at the time) 13 Academy Award Nominations on films as diverse as PLANET OF THE APES, PATTON, PAPILLON, THE WIND AND THE LION, THE OMEN, POLTERGEIST and STAR TREK: THE MOTION PICTURE, Goldsmith would cite the emotional and energizing HOOSIERS (for which he received his 14th Oscar nom.) as one of his all time favorites. Over the next seven years he'd continually chide Anspaugh and Pizzo, asking them, "When are you going to give me another film like HOOSIERS?" - to which they ultimately responded with RUDY. In the best sports based character dramas (RAGING BULL, ROCKY and CHARIOTS OF FIRE among them) music must often speak FOR the central character who is often shy, uneducated or otherwise incapable of expressing the breadth of romance and poetry seeking to burst forth from their warrior's heart. And Goldsmith would give Astin's Rudy a similar musical gift. Not only dyslexic in the taking "in" of information, Rudy also has trouble conveying it - stumbling and stammering over his words in an attempt to explain his expansive feelings, so the score does it for him.
"Tryouts" and "Take Us Out" feature an exhilarating brass-powered "warrior" motif not unlike similarly toned fanfares in Goldsmith's medieval LIONHEART and FIRST KNIGHT. And after a lifetime of popular tunes (THE OMEN and STAR TREK: THE MOTION PICTURE two of the most recognizable themes ever), this "warrior" theme would surprisingly become one of his most famous and beloved, by not only film and film music fans, but the general public - it today still being used in film trailer after trailer, and even serving as the "Theme Music" for Senator John McCain's 2008 Presidential Campaign. For softer reflective moments (such as "To Notre Dame") a faint lush choir underscores the "spiritual quest" aspect of Rudy's expedition of the heart.

The True Rudy Story ( Part 1 )
Rudy is a 1993 film directed by David Anspaugh. It is an account of the life of Daniel "Rudy" Ruettiger who harbored dreams of playing football at the University of Notre Dame despite significant obstacles. It was the first movie the Notre Dame administration allowed shot on campus since "Knute Rockne: All American" in 1940. In 2005 "Rudy" was named one of the best 25 sports movies of the previous 25 years in two polls by ESPN (#24 by a panel of sports experts, and #4 by espn.com users)
