Bob Wills - Steel Guitar Rag 1936
Bob Wills was born in Kosse, Texas in 1905. In 1929 he started the Wills Fiddle Boys in Ft. Worth, then came to the attention of perennial Texas Gubernatorial candidate Pappy Lee O'Daniel who ran the Light Crust Flour Mills in Saginaw, Texas just north of Ft. Worth. Wills lept to fame playing as the Light Crust Doughboys but after several years the band tired of the gig as they were also expected to load flour trucks during the day. In '34 the band moved to Tulsa to get away from Pappy Lee and formed the Texas Playboys. They invented western music with a jazz beat known as Western Swing. Some of his music was dead-on jazz while other songs were straight western-his genre was hard to pin down. On clear channel 50,000 watt KVOO in Tulsa The Playboys broadcast from Cain's Ballroom on North Mainand they played it all. In 1968 Wills was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame as the King of Western Swing- and as Willie Nelson crooned-he's still the King. Wills died in Tulsa in 1975.
Leon McAuliffe, his steel guitar player featured on this record, was born in Houston, Texas in 1917. He played with Bob Wills band until WWII and after the war formed his own group in Tulsa.

Bob Wills Breakdown +
Bob Wills shows his master showmanship as both bandleader and musician in this short known as Fiddlin' Man.
Backing the king of western swing, the gum-chewing pianist, the expressionless guitarist, and the giddy drummer make playing with Wills look easy.

Bob Wills and the Texas Playboys - Roly Poly
Ah Haa . . . Bob Wills and the Texas Playboys doing "Roly Poly," a 1946 Columbia Records release all about "daddy's little fatty." "Roly Poly, eatin' corn n' taters, hungry every minute of the day." A real Western Swing classic. I can't think of another song that hits on a similar subject . . .

A big thanks to Matthews MSE (www.msegrip.com) especially to Bob Kulesh, Tyler & Ed Phillips for their generous support and patience of this lengthy endeavor. Most of the linear motion control shots were captured using their FloatCam DC Slider, a wonderful piece of engineering for the time lapse world.
'Nightfall' is a three minute tour of light through the City of Angels.
I shot "Nightfall" in an attempt to capture Los Angeles as it transitioned from day to night. As you probably know, LA is an expansive city so shooting it from many different angles was critical. Usually I was able to capture just one shot per day with a lot of driving, exploring, and scouting in between but the times sitting in traffic or a "sketchy" neighborhood often lead to new adventures and interesting places.
Nightfall in particular is my favorite time to shoot time lapse. Capturing the transition from day to night while looking back at the city as the purple shadow of Earth envelopes the eastern skyline and the warm distant twinkling halogen lights spark to life and give the fading sun a run for her money- this will never grow old or boring to me.
In this piece, it was important to me for the shots to both capture and accentuate the movement of light through the day and night and the use of multiple motion control techniques allowed me to do so.
I hope you enjoy watching it as much as I enjoyed creating it.
An English translation of the lyrics-
"It is late. I am looking for my other home, taking an unfamiliar path: a small trail near the factories and the city, cutting through the forest. I can barely see nature when suddenly, night falls. I am engulfed by a world of silence, yet I am not afraid. I fall asleep for a few minutes at the most, and when I wake up, the sun is there and the forest is shining with a bright light.
I recognize this forest. It is not an ordinary forest, it is a forest of memories. My memories. The white and noisy river, my adolescence. The tall trees, the men I have loved. The birds in flight, and in the distance, my lost father.
My memories aren't memories anymore. They are there, with me, dancing and embracing, singing and smiling at me.
I look at my hands. I caress my face, and I am 20 years old. And I love like I have never loved before."

"THE HEART & SOUL OF NEW YORK CITY"
A K1X film by Kevin Couliau
Yes, it's about that time. Rain, sleet and snow have made way for the sun, long evenings and fresh sneakers. Early may, when Europe's hardwood champions have been crowned and the NBA playoffs shift into full gear, marks the inofficial start of the real basketball season: the streetball season! That's when reputations are made, nicknames are born and every ballplayer naturally gravitates towards that "thump", "thump" sound of his or her home court. Playground basketball is where it all started. Playground basketball is where talent is honed and friendships are made. It's where neighborhoods gather and where skills and sweat are a currency. That's especially true for the mecca of basketball, New York City. Nowhere else do streetball tournaments, players and games attract a quasi-religious following. Dollars, pride and bragging rights are on the line. Believe the hype!
The idea for a visual love letter to NY basketball was born when Red Cafe's unreleased track "Heart & Soul" established itself as an instant office-favorite at K1X headquarters in Munich (Germany) last spring. Niels Jager (K1X Go-To Guy): "The tune was on replay 24/7. And one day it hit us: let's build a statue for NYC streetball!" Red Cafe's ode to the city that never sleeps is a Pete Rock production that boasts all the makings of a hip hop classic. K1X, who has been active in the outfitting of several high profile NYC streetball tournaments for several years, was all the more surprised to find out that this beast of a tune was not yet a prime focus of Red Cafe's record label. Shake Down quickly agreed to let K1X shoot a poetic clip for the song, whose lyrics are a glowing personification of K1X's appreciation for street basketball: The Heart & Soul of New York City.
French streetball documentarist Kevin Couliau (Asphalt Chronicles), who spent the summer of 2009 in the five boroughs hunting down supreme blacktop action, was a natural choice to capture the raw essence of NYC and its rich streetball culture. As was the Canon 5D Mark II as Couliau's weapon of choice. Art director / director / producer Thibaut de Longeville (director of the acclaimed "Just For Kicks" sneaker culture documentary) and motion graphic designer Vincent Dumond of 360 Creative in Paris added their visual expertise to the project and took care of elegant motion graphics and bona fide post production.
The outcome of this work will celebrate its world premiere on May 1st 2010 on k1x.com. The clip features action from K1X affiliated tournaments in Harlem ("Together We Chill" and "Kingdome Classic") and the Lower East Side ("Lower Manhattan Classic") as well as a variety of other city courts and an impressive array of cameos by iconic players, opinion leading heads and a bunch of regular dudes. Bobbito Garcia, who got an early preview of the clip last winter had this to say: "It's so beautiful, man. It's snowing tonight but it made me look forward to the coming summer months again."
World Premiere: Witness "The Heart & Soul of New York City" on May 1st 2010 on k1x.com!

The Great Camera Shootout 2011: Episode 1 ~ "The Tipping Point"
In the most scientific camera comparison to date, "The Great Camera Shootout 2011: a documentary of the Single Chip Camera Evaluation (SCCE)" premieres with Episode 1: ''The Tipping Point." The first episode of the 3-part web series examines three SCCE Tests: The Dynamic Range Test, The Under Exposure Test and The Over Exposure Test.
Robert Primes, ASC, designed and administered the full series of tests. "That's right," says Web Series Director Steve Weiss,"We didn't want people to think that these tests were biased in any way. So Bob created the SCCE as an independent organization to conduct the testing." Additionally, Bob Primes designed the tests with his own technicians and selected the cameras to be tested.
The impressive 12-Camera line-up includes: 35mm Kodak 5213 & 5219 Film, Arri Alexa, RED ONE M-X, Weisscam HS-2, Phantom Flex, Sony F-35, Sony F3, Panasonic AG-AF100, Canon 5D Mark II, Canon 1D Mark IV, Canon 7D and Nikon D7000. In addition to the SCCE tests, the web series features commentary from some of the top DPs in the industry, which was filmed at worldwide screening locations in Sydney, Amsterdam, New York, London, Las Vegas (NAB) and Hollywood "You'll hear from indie filmmakers, event shooters, commercial DPs, directors and corporate filmmakers," says Steve Weiss, "Although you are not watching these tests in a 2K theatrical setting, hearing such commentary from people in the ASC, BSC, ACS, CSC, NSC, ICG and the SOC, will help you evaluate the significance of these tests."
This first episode of the series looks at the dynamic range and usable latitude of each camera. "We need to see how these cameras record real scenes," says Jens Bogehegn. Thus, Bob Primes, ASC, designed an under-exposure scene and an over-exposure scene. In regards to methodology, the camera master had to set their camera to record the widest dynamic range and they were not allowed to change any settings between the two scenes. The combination of both of these scenes will show the usable dynamic range of each camera. The featured scenes are shot by Michael Bravin and lit by Matt Siegel and Nancy Schreiber, ASC.
***The featured tests include three scenes: a back-lit test chart shot by Michael Bravin, an under-exposure scene lit by Matt Siegel and an over-exposure scene lit by Nancy Schreiber, ASC.

Bob Wills & His Texas Playboys - Trouble In Mind (1936)
Bob Wills was the driving force behind Western Swing, a form of Country & Western that fuses Jazz, Hillbilly, Blues, Big Band Swing, and many more rhythm forms together creating a truly Unique, Diverse and Unforgettable sound. Wills' shrewd mix of horns, fiddles and steel guitar made for a swinging sound that grabbed the public's ear during the mid 1930s and 1940s.
Bob Wills was born into a family of fiddlers on March 6, 1905. His father, John Wills regularly won Texas fiddling competitions. Bob learned how to play fiddle and mandolin from his father. As a young man, Wills performed at house dances, medicine shows and in 1929 made his debut on the radio. With commercial sponsorship, Wills' bands performed on radio in the early 1930s as "Aladdin's Laddies" (for the Aladdin Lamp Co.) and "The Light Crust Doughboys" (for Light Crust Flour). Following a salary dispute, Wills renamed his band the Texas Playboys and relocated to Tulsa, Oklahoma, where he had a live radio show. This exposure led to a contract with the American Recording Corporation - later absorbed into Columbia Records.
In September 1935, Bob Wills and His Texas Playboys recorded their first songs in a makeshift recording studio in an old Dallas Warehouse. From that point on, The Texas Playboys became an overnight sensation and recorded prolifically and made such classics as "Steel Guitar Rag", "Maiden's Prayer", "Take Me Back to Tulsa" and Wills' signature song, "San Antonio Rose". Their biggest hit, was "New Spanish Two Step", which topped the country charts for 16 weeks in 1946. The Texas Playboys always had fine singers like Tommy Duncan and Leon McAuliffe, and Wills punctuated the tunes with jive talking, falsetto asides and cries of "Ah-ha!" He'd call out soloists by name and instrument, good-naturedly goading them on to rollicking solo performances.
In terms of personnel, The Texas Playboys expanded and contracted over the years, according to Wills' desires and the whims of the market. At one point the Texas Playboys were 22 pieces strong, although the band more typically numbered between 9 and 18 members. There were personnel changes and musical shifts as Wills struggled to adapt to the changing face of America in the postwar era. Nonetheless, there was always a solid core of loyal regulars in The Texas Playboys. After leaving Columbia in 1947, Wills continued to record prolifically for such labels as MGM, Decca, Longhorn and Kapp. The group also toured the country and often performed at a Wills-owned dancehall in Sacramento, California.
In 1968, Wills was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame. A year later, he suffered a debilitating stroke. There were reunions and recording sessions with many of the old Texas Playboys in 1971 and 1973. Wills' final stroke came in his sleep following the first day of a recording session in December 1973 that resulted in the double album "For the Last Time". Confined to a wheelchair, he'd reprised his role as bandleader that day with a group of musicians that included former Texas Playboys. He never regained consciousness and died 18 months later on May 13, 1975.
Wills has been revered by such country-music legends as Waylon Jennings, Willie Nelson, George Straight, and Merle Haggard who made a 1976 remake of Bob's 1941 hit "Cherokee Maiden". The contemporary Western Swing group, Asleep at the Wheel has also cut a pair of tribute albums that have kept Wills' name before the public. Every year, Bob Wills Day is celebrated on the last Saturday in April in Turkey, Texas.

Bob Wills - Lone Star Rag
In this clip, from a 1940's B Western, Bob Wills and the Texas Playboys, on stage to entertain the locals, are introduced by Tex Ritter. The King of Western Swing then launches into a rendition of his classic 'Lone Star Rag.'
"They're good, aren't they?"
Tex Ritter responds, "Best in the West."
Too right, too right.

Bob Wills - Oklahoma
In this clip, from the B Western "Take Me Back to Oklahoma," Bob Wills and the Texas Playboys croon in perfect harmony 'Oklahoma we love you,' with Wills' signature backup calls.
Riding with Tex Ritter, they sing together 'Calamity Kate.'
But, clearly, the King of Western Swing makes Ritter pale in comparison, in our opinion.
