Lover Man (from "Bird" - 1988)
Bird is a 1988 American biographical film, produced and directed by Clint Eastwood with the screenplay written by Joel Oliansky. The film is a tribute to the life and music of jazz saxophonist Charlie "Bird" Parker. It is constructed as a collage of scenes from Parker's life, from his childhood in Kansas City, through his marriage to Chan Richardson, to his early death at the age of thirty-four.
Forest Whitaker's performance as Parker earned him the Best Actor award at the 1988 Cannes Film Festival and a Golden Globe nomination. In addition, the film also won an Academy Award for Best Sound.
Bird and Lover Man
"A recording for the Dial label from July 29, 1946, provides evidence of his condition. Prior to this session, Parker drank about a quart of whiskey. According to the liner notes of Charlie Parker on Dial Volume 1, Parker missed most of the first two bars of his first chorus on the track, "Max Making Wax." When he finally did come in, he swayed wildly and once spun all the way around, going badly off mic. On the next tune, "Lover Man", producer Ross Russell physically supported Parker in front of the microphone. On "Bebop" (the final track Parker recorded that evening) he begins a solo with a solid first eight bars. On his second eight bars, however, Parker begins to struggle, and a desperate Howard McGhee, the trumpeter on this session, shouts, "Blow!" at Parker. McGhee's bellow is audible on the recording. Charles Mingus considered this version of "Lover Man" to be among Parker's greatest recordings despite its flaws. Nevertheless, Parker hated the recording and never forgave Ross Russell for releasing the sub-par performance (and re-recorded the tune in 1953 for Verve, this time in stellar form, but perhaps lacking some of the passionate emotion in the earlier, problematic attempt)."

1988 Three - Point Shootout Larry Bird vs Dale Ellis
It's 1988, All-Star Saturday in Chicago. Bird had won the first two three-point contests and is looking for the three-peat. Again, again, again... for the third consecutive time Larry Bird won the three-point contest, this time with his finger he said "I'm the number one".

04.03.1988 - Mavs @ Celtics - Larry Bird highlights
Lot of threes and great passes by Bird in this one. Larry set his career high in threes made with 7 and threes attempted with 10.
Quality is poor I know, but can't do anything about it.

Michael Jordan v Larry Bird 1988
1988 was an incredible year for Michael Jordan. He won his first MVP, Defensive Player of the year, All Star MVP, the Slam Dunk Contest, his second straight scoring title and led the Bulls to 50 wins. But at that time the best team in the East was still Larry Bird's Boston Celtics.
The Celtics won this game. Bird had 44 points to Jordan's 39. Jordan got his revenge 3 days later though in a Bulls victory over the Celtics. Jordan had 46 points and the Bulls won 50 games for the first time in a season.
I've done something a little different this time. Instead of just showing Jordan's highlights, I've shown Birds as well because this was a classic shoot out.
Enjoy

Larry Bird - 33/7/8 vs. Jordan's Bulls (1988)
Bird put on a shooting clinic in the first half and then a passing one in the second half. You see a nice variety of Bird's passing repertoire in this game as he made several blind, no look, touch and left handed passes.
Like with most of the Celtic-Bull games in the '86-'88 stretch, Bird outplayed Jordan easily and extended both his individual and team dominance in heads up matches.

Bird catches fire in the third quarter and even throws down a facial dunk at the end. There was a stretch where he scored 11 straight and I thought it was best to leave it unedited.

Reading a newspaper, I saw a picture of birds on the electric wires. I cut out the photo and decided to make a song, using the exact location of the birds as notes (no Photoshop edit). I knew it wasn't the most original idea in the universe. I was just curious to hear what melody the birds were creating.
I sent the music to the photographer, Paulo Pinto, who I Googled on the internet. He told his editor, who told a reporter and the story ended up as an interview in the very same newspaper.
Here I've posted a short video made with the photo, the music and the score (composed by the birds).

A big thanks to Matthews MSE (www.msegrip.com) especially to Bob Kulesh, Tyler & Ed Phillips for their generous support and patience of this lengthy endeavor. Most of the linear motion control shots were captured using their FloatCam DC Slider, a wonderful piece of engineering for the time lapse world.
'Nightfall' is a three minute tour of light through the City of Angels.
I shot "Nightfall" in an attempt to capture Los Angeles as it transitioned from day to night. As you probably know, LA is an expansive city so shooting it from many different angles was critical. Usually I was able to capture just one shot per day with a lot of driving, exploring, and scouting in between but the times sitting in traffic or a "sketchy" neighborhood often lead to new adventures and interesting places.
Nightfall in particular is my favorite time to shoot time lapse. Capturing the transition from day to night while looking back at the city as the purple shadow of Earth envelopes the eastern skyline and the warm distant twinkling halogen lights spark to life and give the fading sun a run for her money- this will never grow old or boring to me.
In this piece, it was important to me for the shots to both capture and accentuate the movement of light through the day and night and the use of multiple motion control techniques allowed me to do so.
I hope you enjoy watching it as much as I enjoyed creating it.
An English translation of the lyrics-
"It is late. I am looking for my other home, taking an unfamiliar path: a small trail near the factories and the city, cutting through the forest. I can barely see nature when suddenly, night falls. I am engulfed by a world of silence, yet I am not afraid. I fall asleep for a few minutes at the most, and when I wake up, the sun is there and the forest is shining with a bright light.
I recognize this forest. It is not an ordinary forest, it is a forest of memories. My memories. The white and noisy river, my adolescence. The tall trees, the men I have loved. The birds in flight, and in the distance, my lost father.
My memories aren't memories anymore. They are there, with me, dancing and embracing, singing and smiling at me.
I look at my hands. I caress my face, and I am 20 years old. And I love like I have never loved before."

Bird (44pts/11rebs/8asts) vs. Drexler (36pts/8rebs/8asts) (1988)
Larry and Clyde put up a great show at The Boston Garden, both coming close to triple doubles. Although Portland has the lead for most of the game and Drexler has one heck of a 3rd quarter, Larry Bird wins the game for Boston with some clutch 4th quarter baskets. All points, rebounds and assists from both Bird and Drexler are included. February 24, 1988.

Bird shooting lights out vs. Warriors. Like usual he had a well rounded game with 10 rebounds and 5 assists.
Rare sight of Sampson in a Warriors uniform. The single Sampson highlight might let on that he still possessed most of his athleticism but there was a clear difference from his former days. There was one play where he couldn't even get up to finish an open alleyoop dunk (got rejected by the rim). After his brief stint with the Warriors, his career was essentially over.
