Angela (Theme From 'Taxi') - Bob James (1978)
Robert McElhiney James (born December 25, 1939) is a jazz and jazz fusion keyboardist, arranger and producer. During the 1970s, Bob James played a major role in turning fusion jazz more mainstream. "Angela", the instrumental theme from the 1970s television sitcom "Taxi", is probably Bob James' most well-known work to date. It was featured on "Touchdown", a 1978 jazz album which was a commercial breakout album for him. The song was named after the guest character in the third episode of the first season ("Blind Date"), but after hearing the song, the producers made this the show's main theme, replacing their previous choice, which became this album's title track. The title of the album is a reference to it being his sixth solo album, a touchdown being worth six points in American football. In addition to his solo work and high-profile collaborations with artists such as Earl Klugh and David Sanborn, James is also the founding member of contemporary jazz supergroup Fourplay. Very influenced by pop and movie music, James has often featured soloists who add a jazz touch to his sound (most notably Grover Washington, Jr.). While best known for his fusion sound, James began in 1962, recording a bop-ish trio set for Mercury. Three years later, his album for ESP was quite avant-garde, with electronic tapes used for effects. James is recognized as one of the progenitors of smooth jazz. His music has also had a profound effect on the history of hip-hop and pop music, having been sampled often. Two of James' songs -- "Nautilus" from 1974's "One" and "Take Me To The Mardi Gras" from 1975's "Two" -- are among the most sampled in hip-hop history, sampled in thirty-two and forty-three hip-hop recordings, respectively. James' music has been most famously sampled by Eric B. & Rakim, Run-D.M.C., Ghostface Killah, Slick Rick, LL Cool J, The Beastie Boys, Missy Elliott, Will.i.am, Common, Wu-Tang Clan, Röyksopp, De La Soul, Warren G, André 3000, and N.W.A, among many others. TunePlay - TAXI (1978 - '83) Bob James
Ironically, while today considered one of the corners of a trio of "all time best workplace TV comedies" which established the genre (the other two being THE MARY TYLER MOORE SHOW and CHEERS), the critically acclaimed and multi-award winning TAXI (1978 - '83) limped through it's initial network run, the victim of fluctuating ratings which caused the show, after cancellation by ABC, to leap to rival network NBC during it's 5th and final season. Co-created by THE MARY TYLER MOORE SHOW's James L. Brooks, who also gave TV audiences ROOM 222, RHODA, LOU GRANT, THE SIMPSONS and THE TRACY ULLMAN SHOW (the last two as producer), and feature film audiences TERMS OF ENDEARMENT, BROADCAST NEWS and AS GOOD AS IT GETS (all as director), TAXI followed the comedic (and at times poignant) trials and tribulations of a group of drivers for the fictitious New York based Sunshine Cab Company, as they attempt to make ends meet and realize life dreams, while under the tyrannical (and more times than not, hilarious) reign of company dispatcher Louis DePalma (Danny DeVito).
Judd Hirsch's Alex Reigert was the heart, soul and core of the series. A compassionate, dry witted pragmatist, who'd earlier in life lost an affluent office job (as well as a wife through divorce), his "school of hard knocks" became the university to which every other character would eventually come for advice. Bobby Wheeler (Jeff Conaway) was the shallow would-be actor who slowly develops a conscience. Elaine Nardo (Marilu Henner - upon whom every guy in America between 12 and 112 had a schoolboy crush), was the single mother with aspirations of a career in art. Tony Banta (Tony Danza) - the kind hearted, if intellectually challenged, boxer who's license has been pulled by the sport commission as he's been knocked out one too many times. "Reverend" Jim Ignatowski (Christopher Lloyd), a burned out relic of 60's era drug culture, who from time to time displays amazing intellectual and artistic abilities. Mechanic Latka Gravas (Andy Kaufman), a shy immigrant from a (presumably) Eastern European? Nation. And Simka Gravas (Carol Kane), Latka's eventual wife who, while just as shy, often displays more brio than her husband in standing up to Louis' verbal abuses.
TAXI's immensely popular jazz / funk score was composed by legendary keyboardist and producer Bob James. James' early career saw him as session musician for the likes of Sarah Vaughn and Stanley Turrentine before going solo in the mid 1970s. Since then (founding his own Tappen Zee label) he's become one of the founders of the "smooth pop jazz" movement; as well as the creative force behind a series of lps, and (among others) acclaimed team-ups with guitarist Earl Klugh, saxophonist David Sanborn, and leading member of Fourplay - featuring Nathan East, Lee Ritenour and Harvey Mason. He'd also be listed in music history as the artist who's work has been sampled by more hip hop artists than any other. "Nautilus" (from his 1974 album "One") alone has found it's way into the musical warp and weft of songs by Eric B. & Rakim, Soul 2 Soul, Run-D.M.C. and Slick Rick; while others have become the breakbeats for popular tunes by Crash Crew, LL Cool J, The Beastie Boys, Missy Elliot, Will.i.am and more.
Ironically his most recognizable piece - "Angela", the theme to TAXI, was not James' original choice as the show's main title. He'd originally intended the more up-tempo "Touchdown" for that purpose. The charmingly melancholy "Angela" was actually penned for the first season episode "Blind Date". But at the last minute the producers felt it, more so than "Touchdown", was reflective of the vibe apropos for the tone of the series.
The selections on our TunePlay TAXI suite are from James' 1983 Columbia / Tappen Zee release THE GENIE: THEMES AND VARIATIONS FROM "TAXI". They are taken from an analog lp source, and as such there is, here and there, a bit of mild distortion.

Taxi Opening and Closing Theme 1978 - 1983

Taxi is an American sitcom that originally aired from 1978 to 1982 on ABC and from 1982 to 1983 on NBC. The series, which won 18 Emmy Awards, including three for "Outstanding Comedy Series", focuses on the everyday lives of a handful of New York City taxi drivers and their abusive dispatcher. The series, produced by the John Charles Walters Company, in association with Paramount Television, was created by James L. Brooks, Stan Daniels, David Davis, and Ed. Weinberger.
The show focuses on the employees of the fictional Sunshine Cab Company, and its principal setting is the company's fleet garage in Manhattan. Among the drivers, only Alex Rieger, who is disillusioned with life, considers cab-driving his profession. The others view it as a temporary job that they can leave behind after they succeed in their chosen careers.
Bob James wrote the opening theme, "Angela", which was originally intended for a sequence in episode #3 ("Blind Date"). The producers liked this slower, more melancholy tune better than the up-tempo opening theme they had initially chosen ("Touchdown"). Both songs are on James's 1978 album, Touchdown.
In 1983, James released The Genie, an LP containing much of the incidental music he had written for Taxi during its run.

Duck Sauce "Barbra Streisand"
Duck Sauce, the eminent producer duo comprised of A-Trak and Armand Van Helden, are primed to drop their second official single, “Barbra Streisand” on October 12th. If 3 million YouTube views of last year’s debut “aNYway” are any indicator, the official release of “Barbra Streisand” will be met with rabid anticipation as fan-recorded bootlegs have fueled blog excitement all summer.
"Barbra Streisand" continues to perfect the Duck Sauce sound, which joyously mashes classic disco house with forward-thinking dancefloor energy and expert production. A-Trak and AVH are bona fide DJ heroes whose team-ups are fueled by anything-goes samples, an almost childlike sense of fun, and 100% NYC attitude. This approach has made Duck Sauce fans-for-life out of partygoers around the globe, and will continue to convert anyone within earshot of "Barbra"'s instantly addictive, whistling hook.
For the video, director So Me (Justice, Kid Cudi, MGMT) uses the song to soundtrack a hyperactive, ecstatic New York City travelogue. Shot over a week of long nights out with A-Trak and Armand (including live footage from the Fool's Gold "Day Off" labor day block party), the clip is a pop-art adventure starring commandeered taxis and hotdog stands, sexy strangers, and a who's-who of famous friends: rappers, producers, indie rockers, graffiti writers and nightlife icons all take turns adding their own special sauce to the song, turning "Barbra Streisand" into one of this year's must-rewind clips.
Watch the video and see just how many cameos you can catch, then pick up the "Barbra Streisand" single (featuring striking sleeve art from Fool's Gold art director Dust La Rock) on October 12th.
