The semahane (whirling-dervish hall) at the centre of this tekke (dervish lodge) was erected in 1491 and renovated in 1608 and 2009. It's part of a complex including a meydan-ı şerif (courtyard), çeşme (drinking fountain), türbesi (tomb) and hamuşan (cemetery). The oldest of six historic Mevlevihaneleri (Mevlevi tekkes) remaining in İstanbul, the complex was converted into a museum in 1946.
The Mevlevi tarika (order), founded in the central Anatolian city of Konya during the 13th century, flourished throughout the Ottoman Empire. Like several other orders, the Mevlevis stressed the unity of humankind before God regardless of creed.
Taking their name from the great Sufi mystic and poet, Celaleddin Rumi (1207–73), called Mevlana (Our Leader) by his disciples, Mevlevis seek to achieve mystical communion with God through a sema (ceremony) involving chants, prayers, music and a whirling dance. This tekke 's first şeyh (sheikh) was Şemaî Mehmed Çelebi, a grandson of the great Mevlana.
Dervish orders were banned in the early days of the Turkish republic because of their ultraconservative religious politics. Although the ban has been lifted, only a handful of functioning tekkes remain in İstanbul, including this one and the İstanbul Bilim Sanat Kültür ve Eğitim Derneği in Fatih. Konya remains the heart of the Mevlevi order.
Beneath the semahane is an interesting exhibit that includes displays of Mevlevi clothing, turbans and accessories. The mahfiller (upstairs floor) houses the tekke 's collection of traditional musical instruments, calligraphy and ebru (paper marbling).
The hamuşan is full of stones with graceful Ottoman inscriptions, including the tomb of Galip Dede, the 17th-century Sufi poet whom the street is named after. The shapes atop the stones reflect the headgear of the deceased, each hat denoting a different religious rank.

Sufism is the mystical Islamic belief and practice in which Muslims seek to find the truth of divine love and knowledge through direct personal experience of God. Sufi whirling is a form of physically active meditation which is still practiced by the Sufi Dervishes of the Mevlevi order. It is a customary dance performed within the worship ceremony, through which Dervishes aim to reach the source of all perfection. This is sought through abandoning one's ego or personal desires, by listening to the music, focusing on God, and spinning one's body in repetitive circles, which has been seen as a symbolic imitation of planets in the Solar System orbiting the sun.
The Dervish’s camel's hair hat represents the tombstone of the ego; his wide, white skirt represents the ego's shroud. At the beginning of the service, by holding his arms crosswise, the Dervish represents the number one, thus testifying to God's unity. While whirling, his arms are open: his right arm is directed to the sky, ready to receive God's beneficence; his left hand, upon which his eyes are fastened, is turned toward the earth. Revolving from right to left around the heart, the whirler embraces all humanity with love. The ball of the left foot never leaves the floor.
The Sheikh leads the ritual with strict regulations. To begin, the Sheikh stands in the most honored corner of the dancing place, and the dervishes pass by him three times, each time exchanging greetings, until the circling movement starts. If a Dervish should become too enraptured, another Sufi, who is in charge of the orderly performance, will gently touch his frock in order to curb his movement. The dance of the Dervishes is one of the most impressive features of the mystical life in Islam, and the music accompanying it is beautiful. Bob and I both thought it was mesmerizing.

Event Details:
According to the Global Terrorism Index, religious extremism has become the main driver of terrorism in recent years. This narrative is repeatedly promoted by government ministers, however, a growing body of academic work holds this position to be fundamentally flawed. A better account of terrorism would acknowledge the geopolitical, economic and, perhaps most importantly, a historically accurate Islamic perspective.
Islam has become associated in the minds of many with an extremism that promotes not only terrorism, but coerciveness in many forms: male dominance, narrow dogmatic thinking, religious and political tyranny. In order to counter the mentality that breeds coercion and violence, we need to restore the understanding of Islam as a spiritual practice that transforms the ego (nafs).
Join us for a fascinating discussion with Sheikh Kabir Helminski on extremism as a pathology of the ego with a religious justification. All human endeavours and institutions are prone to degradation because of egoism. The real and original Islam was and is a remedy for this spiritual disease.
Speakers:
Kabir Edmund Helminski is co-founder and co-director of the Threshold Society a non-profit educational organisation and has been working within the Mevlevi tradition of Sufism for about thirty years alongside his wife Camille Helminski. He has developed programmes that provide a structure for practice and study within Sufism and spiritual psychology and is author and/translator of numerous books and volumes of Sufi literature including many works of Rumi, and two books on Sufism: Living Presence, A Sufi Way to Mindfulness and the Essential Self (1992) and a collection of essays, The Knowing Heart (1999).
Kabir began the study of Sufism with Suleyman Hayati of Konya and was officially recognized as a Shaikh of the Mevlevi Order of Sufism in 1990, by the late Celalettin Celebi, former Head of the Mevlevi Order. From 1980 until 1999 he was the director of Threshold Books, one of the foremost publishers of Sufi literature. Between 1994 and 2000 he toured with the whirling dervishes of Turkey bringing the spiritual culture of the Mevlevis to more than 100,000 people. His books have been translated into Spanish, Italian, Dutch, German, Turkish, Russian, and Indonesian. He has an M.A. in transpersonal studies from the Institute of Transpersonal Studies and an honorary Ph.D. in literature from Selçuk University Konya Turkey. He has lectured at hundreds of institutions and in 2009 was named as one of the 500 Most Influential Muslims in the World by the Royal Islamic Strategic Studies Center in association with Georgetown University. He is one of the signatories of "A Common Word Between Us and You", an open letter by Islamic scholars to Christian leaders, calling for peace and understanding. He resides with his family in Louisville Kentucky USA.

On April 12th, Biscayne Bay campus once again witnessed a sensational Persian concert, this time Davod Azad the renowned world music artist. Being a follower of Persian Sufi and Mysticism school of thought, Azad boards the audience on an unworldly ship, on a voyage to another dimension in time. The audience explored a specific genre of traditional Persian music called Khaneghahi.
The concert consisted of two acts, starring Davod Azad on Tanbour, Taar and Oud (Persian string instruments), accompanied by Reza Filsoofi, a well-known Miami-based instrumental artist, on Tonbak, Daf and drums (Persian drum instruments).
The first act consisted of six pieces in Shour, Mahour and Shooshtari (Persian musical modal systems). Azad elaborated on the pieces and explained that Khaneghahi music is the apparatus to connect the audience to the divine being. Mentioned is the path of Sufis to affiliate with the unity of existence.
The second act contained seven pieces in Bayat-Esfahan, Shour and Nava (Persian musical modal systems). The poetry of Azad, infused with the delicacy of Filsoofi created a hypnotic trance atmosphere, which dwelled relentlessly. The crowd, old and young, oblivious of time and place, waxed and waned with the music. The verse Ma'shoogh Leili Leili (my lover Leili, Leili) was repeated and repeated by Azad. Filsoofi stroke passionately on Daf. The rhythm went higher and higher and hearts beat faster and faster. One could almost glimpse a group of dervishes entering the concert hall one after another: With their hands crossed on their chests and wearing cloud white gowns, they bow respectfully to the audience and start to whirl into Sa'ma (Sufi dance). Spiritual poems flowed in the hall, inundated with divinity:
Without love, the world is an entire pain...
My lover came to me at last...
A moaning heart is a sign of love...
The history of Sufism dates back to the ancient times in Iran. However it was officially acknowledged in the 9th century A.D. Sufi hymn is a devotional music owing its poetry and philosophy to the all-time Iranian poet Rumi. Accredited by other famous Iranian poets and theologians such as Hafez, Abū Sa`īd Abū-l-Khair and Attar among many others, Sufism is mainly defined as an eternal philosophy of existence that pre-dates religion. Some also believe it is the mystical dimension of Islam. Regardless of its definition, Sufism is a school of self-realization. Sufis believe in the possibility of embracing oneness and the divine presence of God in this life, not in another, not in heavens.
Sa'ma or the whirling dance of the Sufis is a ceremony performed in remembrance of God. Sa'ma means listening to the sounds of this world and another (the realm of God). The whirling dervish is on a pilgrim within; his Ka'ba (the holy house of God for Muslims) is his own being:
O pilgrims, thou art where? Thou art where?
The beloved is neigh, come hither, come hither
"Rumi"
Each order of Sufism, based on their culture, language, and customs has its own style and Mugham (Persian music modal systems). Structure is based on quaternary (Hayullah Mugham) or binary (Da-eem Mugham) rhythms. It is usually kept simple to accord with the Sa'ma dance (the primary role of Khaneghah music).
Davod Azad is one of the pioneers in introducing the Nimatullahi Order in Iran. As a composer, vocalist and instrumentalist he has led a solo career performing in Iran, North America, Europe, Bhutan, Australia, India, etc. as well as many international venues and radio stations such as Radio Culture House in Austria. He is the first to have fused the Iranian traditional music with western classical (Bach) resulting in the album "Divan of Rumi & Bach". Being an absolute enthusiast of collaborative music, he has played along versatile musical forms such as Jazz, Blues, western and eastern classical. His tours are widely received worldwide and his fans embody heterogeneous nationalities and races.
Reza Filsoofi, also an instrumentalist, is a local Iranian artist in South Florida. He has gained his knowledge from master musicians in Iran and ever since has been performing and teaching both in Iran and the United States. He stages numerous events and festivals in an effort to introduce Persian classical music to both Iranians living abroad and non-Iranian audiences. He has formed the first official traditional Persian ensemble in Florida named "Caravan Ensemble" as well as collaborating with other musicians.
Having generously welcomed the international artists and musicians, Biscayne Bay campus is looking forward to the future events for the upcoming moths hosted by Iranian Cultural Society of South Florida.

Central Anatolia: Cappadocia:In a spectacular landscape, the Göreme valley and its surroundings contain rock-hewn sanctuaries, providing evidence of Byzantine art, as well as dwellings, troglodyte villages and underground towns – the remains of a traditional human habitat dating back to the 4th century. The Greeks were called Rumi and they settled in this area on the 3rd century AD. Konya: cradle of many civilizations. Here In 1273, the Sufi Mevlevi Order was established and its Whirling Dervishes are among the most famous symbols of the city and Turkey. Salt Lake: the second largest lake in Turkey producing 70% of the salt used. Black Sea Region: Safranbolu: From the 13th century was an important caravan station on the main East–West trade route. Ankara: the Capital of Turkey, with the famous museum for the Anatolian Civilization. Mediterranean Region: Adana, Iskenderun and Antakya (Cilicia in the ancient times). Southeastern Anatolia: The towns of Gaziantep, with the best Mosaic Museum the Zeugma, Salinurfa (Urfa) the city of the Prophets (Abraham included) and Harran where the first Islamic University was founded – all with a history dating back to 6th millennium. Mount Nemrut: The mausoleum of Antiochus I (69–34 B.C.), who reigned over Commagene, after the breakup of Alexander's empire, is one of the most ambitious constructions of the Hellenistic period. The syncretism of its pantheon, and the lineage of its kings, which can be traced back through two sets of legends, Greek and Persian, is evidence of its dual culture. Even here, in the depths of Anatolia, the Greek spirit is still quite vivid and dominant. No Greek can ponder around here, without feeling a sense of pride, familiarity and affection.
Music: Turkish Ethnic Music, Instrumental Gulumcan, by Ahmet Ozgul and Turay Dinleyen. The last two pieces are from the soundtrack from the film “A touch of Spice”. Composer Evanthia Reboutsika. Music Copyright owned by the original artists

Jalāl ad-Dīn Muhammad Rūmī (Persian: جلالالدین محمد رومی), also known as Jalāl ad-Dīn Muhammad Balkhī (جلالالدین محمد بلخى), Mawlānā (مولانا, "our master"), Mevlânâ, Mevlevî (مولوی Mawlawī, "my master"), and more popularly simply as Rūmī (1207 – 17 December 1273), was a 13th-century Persian poet, jurist, Islamic scholar, theologian, and Sufi mystic. Rumi's influence transcends national borders and ethnic divisions: Iranians, Tajiks, Turkish, Greeks, Pashtuns, other Central Asian Muslims, and the Muslims of South Asia have greatly appreciated his spiritual legacy for the past seven centuries. His poems have been widely translated into many of the world's languages and transposed into various formats. Rumi has been described as the "most popular poet" and the "best selling poet" in the United States.
Rumi's works are written mostly in Persian, but occasionally he also used Greek, Arabic, and Turkish in his verse. His Mathnawī, composed in Konya, remains one of the purest literary glories of the Persian language. His works are widely read today in their original language across Greater Iran and the Persian-speaking world. Translations of his works are very popular, most notably in Turkey, Azerbaijan, the United States, and South Asia. His poetry has influenced Persian literature, but also Turkish, Punjabi, Hindi, and Urdu, as well as the literature of some other Turkic, Iranian, and Indo-Aryan languages including Chagatai, Pashto, and Bengali.
His full name is "Jalāl ad-Dīn Muḥammad Balkhī" (Persian: جلالالدین محمد بلخى Persian pronunciation: [dʒælɒːlæddiːn mohæmmæde bælxiː]) or "Jalāl ad-Dīn Muḥammad Rūmī" (جلالالدین محمد رومی Persian pronunciation: [dʒælɒːlæddiːn mohæmmæde ɾuːmiː]). He is widely known by the sobriquet Mawlānā/Molānā (Persian: مولانا Persian pronunciation: [moulɒːnɒː]) in Iran and popularly known as Mevlânâ in Turkey, but also Turkish: Celâleddin Muhammed Belhi, Celâleddin Muhammed Rûmi, and Mevlevi in Modern Turkish. Mawlānā means "our master" in the Arabic language. According to the authoritative Rumi biographer Franklin Lewis of the University of Chicago, "[t]he Anatolian peninsula which had belonged to the Byzantine, or eastern Roman empire, had only relatively recently been conquered by Muslims and even when it came to be controlled by Turkish Muslim rulers, it was still known to Arabs, Persians and Turks as the geographical area of Rum. As such, there are a number of historical personages born in or associated with Anatolia known as Rumi, a word borrowed from Arabic literally meaning 'Roman,' in which context Roman refers to subjects of the Byzantine Empire or simply to people living in or things associated with Anatolia." The terms مولوی Mawlawi (Persian) and Mevlevi (Turkish) which mean "my master" in Arabic are more often used for him.
Rumi was born to native Persian-speaking parents, originally from the Balkh city of Khorasan, in present-day Afghanistan. He was born either in Wakhsh, a village located on the Vakhsh River in the greater Balkh region in present-day Tajikistan, or in the city of Balkh, located in present-day Afghanistan.
Greater Balkh was at that time a major centre of Persian culture and Sufism had developed there for several centuries. Indeed, the most important influences upon Rumi, besides his father, are said to be the Persian poets Attar and Sanai. Rumi in one poem express his appreciation: "Attar was the spirit, Sanai his eyes twain, And in time thereafter, Came we in their train" and mentions in another poem: "Attar has traversed the seven cities of Love, We are still at the turn of one street". His father was also connected to the spiritual lineage of Najm al-Din Kubra.
He lived most of his life under the Persianate Seljuq Sultanate of Rum, where he produced his works and died in 1273 AD. He was buried in Konya and his shrine became a place of pilgrimage. Following his death, his followers and his son Sultan Walad founded the Mevlevi Order, also known as the Order of the Whirling Dervishes, famous for its Sufi dance known as the Sama ceremony. He was laid to rest beside his father, and over his remains a splendid shrine was erected. A hagiographical account of him is described in Shams ud-Din Ahmad Aflāki's Manāqib ul-Ārifīn (written between 1318 and 1353). This hagiographical account of his biography needs to be treated with care as it contains both legends and facts about Rumi. For example, Professor Franklin Lewis, University of Chicago, in the most complete biography on Rumi has a separate section for the hagiographical biography on Rumi and actual biography about him.
Rumi's father was Bahā ud-Dīn Walad, a theologian, jurist and a mystic from Balkh, who was also known by the followers of Rumi as Sultan al-Ulama or "Sultan of the Scholars".
