Big Mama (빅마마) was a South Korean female singing group from M Boat, a former sister company of YG Entertainment.
Big Mama (빅마마) has made a name for themselves in Korea, as well as attracting attention abroad, due to their vow to concentrate more on their music than their appearances. Their debut came as a shock to many pop fans because of how their vocals would captivate many people to listen. They had exceeded in many ways. The group lasted for nine years, from 2003 through 2012. When Big Bang was about to debut, they had encouraged them to keep on going.
Before the formation of Big Mama, the members had been active within the music scene due to their vocal abilities. Shin Yeon Ah made her debut in the pop circuit by winning the black prize at the Riverside Song Festival in 1995. From that point onwards, until Big Mama’s debut, she worked as a lyricist and vocalist on radio, dramas and commercials. Lee Young Hyun won a prize at the same festival in 2000. Lee Ji Young had worked as a backing vocalist for the Han Sang-won band.
Big mama (Simplified Chinese: 大妈; Pinyin: dà mā) is a Chinese language neologism for an Internet censor on web bulletin board systems in the People's Republic of China. It can be vaguely compared to the Western Big Brother concept, though on a much lesser scale.
The name is derived from the name for the wife of the eldest uncle, who in traditional Chinese families has the responsibility to take care of everyone. The big mama is usually an employee of the company sponsoring the board whose job it is to remove politically sensitive postings. Big mamas act quite openly and are not reluctant to admit the fact that they are censoring and why they are doing so. The actions of big mamas are generally taken more with annoyance and amusement than with alarm, and there is often some humorous bantering with big mama.
