Chapter: 2 // Review Question: Define key demographic terms and identify regions in which high and low extreme examples of each can be found.
Short Answer:
Many high and low extreme examples of demographic terms often reflect whether those countries are categorized as more a developed country or lesser developed country. For example, crude birth rate, defined as the total number of live births in one year per 1,000 people alive in society, tend to be higher in LDCs like countries in sub-Saharan Africa and low in European countries, most of which are MDCs. The same pattern is followed by total fertility rate, the average number of children a woman will have throughout her childbearing years, with the most of the high extremes being in many LDCs located in sub-Saharan Africa and Southwest Asia and lows being found MDCs, like the United States and China. Considering that MDCs have more access to medical technology, it makes sense that low infant mortality rates, defined as a total number of deaths among infants under 1 year of age for every 1,000 live birth, are found in countries like Canada and the United States while high infant mortality rates are in sub-Saharan African countries. There are several exceptions to trend, one being the crude death rate, defined as the total number of deaths in one year per 1,000 people alive in society, which is lowest in United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, and Libya but highest in Mozambique, Zambia, and Afghanistan.

Not many know but Iran has a lower birth rate than the United States. Turkey and many other Muslim countries do as well. While Muslims are often stereotyped as breeding like rabbits -- the birth rates in the Arab and Muslim world have fallen rapidly. Personally I think due to climate change and factors related to it being harder to farm and ranch food.
The only exception to this is in Africa -- not North Africa but sub-Saharan Africa. Africa is a population bomb in the making. There are potentially over a billion if not BILLIONS of people if current demographic and population and birth trends continue on that continent.
Many will be climate refugees due to climate change. Others due to war, famine, disease, etc.
If Europe has a brain it'll cut off the flow now -- before that African population bomb hits the continent and starts bankrupting welfare states.
But Iran had a 70% fertility decline. Most of the rest of the Arab world had a 40-50% decline -- higher than what we saw in Europe over the last 30-40 year period.

Demographics of Libya include population density, ethnicity, education level, health of the populace, economic status, religious affiliations and other aspects of the Libyan population. No complete population or vital statistics registration exists in Libya. Of the over 6,000,000 Libyans that lived in Libya prior to the Libyan Crisis, more than a million were immigrants. The estimates in this article are from the 2010 Revision of the World Population Prospects which was prepared by the Population Division of the Department of Economic and Social Affairs of the United Nations Secretariat, unless otherwise indicated.
The Libyan population resides in the country of Libya, a territory located on the Mediterranean coast of North Africa, to the west of and adjacent to Egypt. Most Libyans live in Tripoli, the capital of the country and first in terms of population city and Benghazi, Libya's second largest city. Ethnically, the Libyan population is largely a mixture of Arab and Berber ethnicities. According to DNA studies, 90% [citation needed] of the Arab Libyan population descended from the Arab-Berber inter-ethnic mixture and the remaining 10% are Phoenicians, black Africans (especially in the south of the country) and other North African, Asian and European peoples.

Libya
Libya (Arabic: ليبيا Lībiyā) is a country in the Maghreb region of North Africa bordered by the Mediterranean Sea to the north, Egypt to the east, Sudan to the southeast, Chad and Niger to the south, and Algeria and Tunisia to the west. The three traditional parts of the country are Tripolitania, Fezzan and Cyrenaica. With an area of almost 1.8 million square kilometres (700,000 sq mi), Libya is the fourth largest country in Africa, and is the 16th largest country in the world. Libya has the 10th-largest proven oil reserves of any country in the world.
The largest city and capital, Tripoli, is located in western Libya and contains over one million of Libya's six million people. The other large city is Benghazi, which is located in eastern Libya.
Libya has been inhabited by Berbers since the late Bronze Age. The Phoenicians established trading posts in western Libya, and Ancient Greek colonists established city-states in eastern Libya. Libya was variously ruled by Persians, Egyptians and Greeks before becoming a part of the Roman Empire. Libya was an early center of Christianity. After the fall of the Western Roman Empire, the area of Libya was mostly occupied by the Vandals until the 7th century, when invasions brought Islam and Arab colonization. In the sixteenth century, the Spanish Empire and the Knights of St John occupied Tripoli, until Ottoman rule began in 1551. Libya was involved in the Barbary Wars of the 18th and 19th centuries. Ottoman rule continued until the Italian occupation of Libya resulted in the temporary Italian Libya colony from 1911 to 1943. During the Second World War Libya was an important area of warfare in the North African Campaign. The Italian population then went into decline. Libya became an independent kingdom in 1951.

Not many know but Iran has a lower birth rate than the United States. Turkey and many other Muslim countries do as well. While Muslims are often stereotyped as breeding like rabbits -- the birth rates in the Arab and Muslim world have fallen rapidly. Personally I think due to climate change and factors related to it being harder to farm and ranch food. The only exception to this is in Africa -- not North Africa but sub-Saharan Africa. Africa is a population bomb in the making. There are potentially over a billion if not BILLIONS of people if current demographic and population and birth trends continue on that continent. Many will be climate refugees due to climate change. Others due to war, famine, disease, etc. If Europe has a brain it'll cut off the flow now -- before that African population bomb hits the continent and starts bankrupting welfare states. But Iran had a 70% fertility decline. Most of the rest of the Arab world had a 40-50% decline -- higher than what we saw in Europe over the last 30-40 year period. Not many know but Iran has a lower birth rate than the United States. Turkey and many other Muslim countries do as well. While Muslims are often stereotyped as breeding like rabbits -- the birth rates in the Arab and Muslim world have fallen rapidly. Personally I think due to climate change and factors related to it being harder to farm and ranch food.
The only exception to this is in Africa -- not North Africa but sub-Saharan Africa. Africa is a population bomb in the making. There are potentially over a billion if not BILLIONS of people if current demographic and population and birth trends continue on that continent.
Many will be climate refugees due to climate change. Others due to war, famine, disease, etc.
If Europe has a brain it'll cut off the flow now -- before that African population bomb hits the continent and starts bankrupting welfare states.
But Iran had a 70% fertility decline. Most of the rest of the Arab world had a 40-50% decline -- higher than what we saw in Europe over the last 30-40 year period.

Not many know but Iran has a lower birth rate than the United States. Turkey and many other Muslim countries do as well. While Muslims are often stereotyped as breeding like rabbits -- the birth rates in the Arab and Muslim world have fallen rapidly. Personally I think due to climate change and factors related to it being harder to farm and ranch food.
The only exception to this is in Africa -- not North Africa but sub-Saharan Africa. Africa is a population bomb in the making. There are potentially over a billion if not BILLIONS of people if current demographic and population and birth trends continue on that continent.
Many will be climate refugees due to climate change. Others due to war, famine, disease, etc.
If Europe has a brain it'll cut off the flow now -- before that African population bomb hits the continent and starts bankrupting welfare states.
But Iran had a 70% fertility decline. Most of the rest of the Arab world had a 40-50% decline -- higher than what we saw in Europe over the last 30-40 year period.

وعجت مواقع التواصل الاجتماعي خاصة صفحة "أخبار السيدة زينب" على الفيسبوك، بصور عشرات العسكريين وهم يحملون أعلام حزب الله داخل المقام، في مراسمَ أقيمت بعد قتل القيادي البارز في الحزب مصطفى بدر الدين الجمعة الماضية.
وأظهرت الصور حضور عدد من الشخصيات العسكرية الكبيرة في نظام الاسد، من بينهم وفق ما أشارت الصفحة، "ممثلين عن رئيس النظام بشار الأسد، وما يعرف بقوى الأمن الداخلي، والحرس الجمهوري، وقيادة جيش التحرير الفلسطيني، وممثلين عن الأجهزة الأمنية والداخلية، وشخصيات عسكرية".

ويقول السكان إن النظام يسعى لتكرار سيناريو التهجير الجماعي بالقصف اليومي والحرب النفسية.
فبعد تهجير الآلاف من سكان غوطة دمشق الغربية وبلدات أخرى كالتل والهامة وقدسيا، يتخوف قاطنو الغوطة الشرقية من مصير مشابه يروج له نظام الاسد، ويلوح به في وجه أكبر معاقل معارضيه في محيط العاصمة دمشق.
فيوم الجمعة الماضي أعلنت وسائل إعلام مقربة من النظام فتح معبر مخيم الوافدين المجاور لمدينة دوما للراغبين في مغادرة الغوطة الشرقية من المدنيين والمسلحين بعد تسليم أسلحتهم، مع تحديد أوقات معينة لعمل المعبر، مبررة ذلك برغبة النظام و"مركز المصالحة الروسي" في مساعدة المدنيين الذين "يمنعهم مسلحو جبهة النصرة من المغادرة".

When coupled with trends like rising sectarianism, the dark side of individual empowerment, the diffusion of power, and demographic shifts, the outlook for the region remains murky: ISIS and other terrorist groups are upending regional security; Iran is moving closer to having a nuclear weapons capability; Libya is disintegrating; and the “promise” of the Arab Spring has clearly been unfulfilled.
While ISIS’s advances have led to the formation of an international coalition led by the United States to counter this virulent extremist group, some of the underlying causes of ISIS’s rise and growth – state failure, political illegitimacy, and economic underdevelopment – remain unaddressed. Too often, the West attends to the region in reaction to its ills, with a view to containing them. We have asked one of the region’s most visionary thinkers to discuss the positive purposes, which those who must lead the Middle East into its future want the West to understand and to support.
Please join the Atlantic Council on Wednesday, February 11 from 4:00 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. for a discussion on the major strategic issues at stake in the Middle East and a long-term assessment of the opportunities and challenges for 2015 and beyond.

In 2008, demographer Richard Cincotta predicted that between 2010 and 2020 the states along the northern rim of Africa -- Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Libya, and Egypt -- would each reach a demographically measurable point where the presence of at least one liberal democracy (and perhaps two), among the five, would not only be possible, but probable. Recent months have brought possible first steps to validate that prediction.
Cincotta, a consultant with the Environmental Change and Security Program and demographer-in-residence at the Stimson Center, discussed his predictions based on a method described in the ECSP Report 13 article, "Half a Chance: Youth Bulges and Transitions to Liberal Democracy." Discussant Mathew Burrows, counselor at the National Intelligence Council, said Cincotta's work demonstrates that "the demographic tool is essential" to analysts and policymakers.
