Of very few individual songs can it be said, ‘This changed the course of popular music.’ ‘A Day In The Life’ is one such song.
Recorded in January and February 1967, a large orchestra was assembled for the amazing additional flourishes and fills, although at first the 40 classically trained musicians struggled with the concept of what they were being asked to play.
George Martin and Paul conducted the orchestra and helped to create a finished track that was more than just different, it was utterly unique. Starting from John’s beautiful song, the end result was something simply unbelievable.
As you can see from the film, this was no ordinary recording session. The classical musicians, who had been asked to wear evening dress, took it upon themselves to wear fake noses, funny hats and generally enter into the spirit of the occasion. Filmed between 8pm and 1am with guests including Mick Jagger and Keith Richards, the occasion provided some of the inspiration for what transpired during the recording and filming of ‘All You Need Is Love’ for the Our World project.

Title: Day Tripper - Recorded Aug 29,1966 during The Beatles last concert at Candlestick Park in San Francisco.A crowd of 25,000 saw the Beatles final concert which began at 8:00 pm.The support acts,in order of appearance,were the Remains,Bobby Hebb,the Cyrkle and the Ronettes.The Beatles played from 9:27 until precisely 10:00 pm on a stage five feet high and fully encaged by a six foot high wire fence surounded by security and police.After the Philippine fiasco the previous month,the Beatles had already all agreed that after the American part of the tour was over they did not want to go out on the road again,at leasdt in the forseeable future.Although not announced publicly,they told Brian Epstein of their decision on the BOAC flight to London after a four-day stopover in New Delhi.Recognising the concert's significance,John carried a camera up on stage and took photographs of the other Beatles between songs,as well of himself at arms-length.Paul,also realizing that this would be their last show,asked NEMS press officer Tony Barrow to make an audio cassette recording of the performance for posterity.However,without the cassette being flipped,it ran out before the final song finished.Barrow had Sotheby's auction the tape in 1988 and a bootleg album of the last concert started circulating shortly afterward.

It was released by Capitol Records in the United States on 21 October 1977 (catalogue number SKBL-11711) and on Parlophone in the United Kingdom on 19 November 1977 (PCSP 721). The compilation peaked at #24 in Billboard's Top LPs & Tape chart during a 31-week stay that began on 12 November 1977. The RIAA certified the album with sales of three million units in 2000 even though the compilation was deleted in the late 1980s. Day Tripper Bass Cover
Recorded with a Hofner 500/1 '62 Reissue Violin Bass
McCartney's bass on this track is very stellar. I have no clue how he can sing and play this song at the same time as the bass line is very intricate. Notice the slight variation on the rhythm he uses during the second chorus.
I use flatwound strings on the Hofner to produce low bass sounds.

A very interesting clip that dates to November 12, 1963. On this day the Beatles were scheduled to perform at the Guildhall, Portsmouth, England. However, Paul was suffering from stomach flu and the concert had to be cancelled. As you can see in this clip (filmed backstage at the Guildhall for the Southern Television show "Day By Day"), Paul gets more and more uneasy as the interview goes on. Towards the end of the interview John notices that there is somethng wrong with Paul and tries to make some kind of contact with him.

Title: Day Tripper - Recorded Aug 29,1966 during The Beatles last concert at Candlestick Park in San Francisco.A crowd of 25,000 saw the Beatles final concert which began at 8:00 pm.The support acts,in order of appearance,were the Remains,Bobby Hebb,the Cyrkle and the Ronettes.The Beatles played from 9:27 until precisely 10:00 pm on a stage five feet high and fully encaged by a six foot high wire fence surounded by security and police.After the Philippine fiasco the previous month,the Beatles had already all agreed that after the American part of the tour was over they did not want to go out on the road again,at leasdt in the forseeable future.Although not announced publicly,they told Brian Epstein of their decision on the BOAC flight to London after a four-day stopover in New Delhi.Recognising the concert's significance,John carried a camera up on stage and took photographs of the other Beatles between songs,as well of himself at arms-length.Paul,also realizing that this would be their last show,asked NEMS press officer Tony Barrow to make an audio cassette recording of the performance for posterity.However,without the cassette being flipped,it ran out before the final song finished.Barrow had Sotheby's auction the tape in 1988 and a bootleg album of the last concert started circulating shortly afterward.

McCartney's bass on this track is very stellar. I have no clue how he can sing and play this song at the same time as the bass line is very intricate. Notice the slight variation on the rhythm he uses during the second chorus.
I use flatwound strings on the Hofner to produce low bass sounds.

As you can see in this clip (filmed backstage at the Guildhall for the Southern Television show "Day By Day"), Paul gets more and more uneasy as the interview goes on. Towards the end of the interview John notices that there is somethng wrong with Paul and tries to make some kind of contact with him.

I eliminated the second verse and refrain. Harrison used his newly acquired Sonic Blue Strat – I used a 2006 Highway 1 Stratocaster played through a Vox AD15VT set to AC30TB w/ no effects. Min Bass, Min Mid, Max Treble with Fender .010-.046 Super Bullets. Lennon used his Rick 325, which I don’t have, I used a 1966 Gretsch Country with .010 -.046 nickel plated wire wound strings. The amp was close-mic recorded with a Tascam DR07 digital recorder and then mixed with the backing tracks created from the original recording. Compression and EQ were added during mixing. The volume pedal for the rising notes in the bridge was simulated using an automated fader during mixing. No tabs.
For the E chord during the verse, Lennon plays it up at the 7th fret O799XX and then momentarily hits the E7th with O797XX. You can hear him clearly practicing this between studio takes 1 and 2. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9OB3zsE4X1Y at 2:15.
Pan full left to hear the backing performances of Lennon and Harrison. Pan full right to hear the overdub performance of Harrison throughout the song and Lennon during the bridge only.
The electric guitars are played through a Vox AD15VT set to AC30TB with min bass, min mid and max treble and the amp is close mic recorded with a Tascam DR01 hand-held digital recorder. I eliminated the second verse and refrain. Harrison used his newly acquired Sonic Blue Strat – I used a 2006 Highway 1 Stratocaster played through a Vox AD15VT set to AC30TB w/ no effects. Min Bass, Min Mid, Max Treble with Fender .010-.046 Super Bullets. Lennon used his Rick 325, which I don’t have, I used a 1966 Gretsch Country with .010 -.046 nickel plated wire wound strings. The amp was close-mic recorded with a Tascam DR07 digital recorder and then mixed with the backing tracks created from the original recording. Compression and EQ were added during mixing. The volume pedal for the rising notes in the bridge was simulated using an automated fader during mixing. No tabs.
For the E chord during the verse, Lennon plays it up at the 7th fret O799XX and then momentarily hits the E7th with O797XX. You can hear him clearly practicing this between studio takes 1 and 2. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9OB3zsE4X1Y at 2:15.
Pan full left to hear the backing performances of Lennon and Harrison. Pan full right to hear the overdub performance of Harrison throughout the song and Lennon during the bridge only.

We have set aside a day this month to switch her over to her new big girl bed. There are going to be a lot of transitions in her life coming in the next 2-3 months so we're taking things slow and steady.
