At present the planet operates outside that safe space, as witnessed by the enormous number of people who are undernourished. http://www.euronews.com/ American diplomacy is moving this weekend from the South Korean capital Seoul to Beijing and Tokyo, as tension surrounding North Korea\'s ongoing military threats continues. There are fears that Pyongyang may use Monday\'s birthday of the country\'s founder to launch a missile.

US Secretary of State John Kerry is visiting China on Saturday and then Japan on Sunday in a bid to defuse the tension and reassure allies. He is expected to put more pressure on Beijing to work harder to tame its belligerent neighbour.

Before leaving South Korea, he promised that Washington would defend its allies in the region if necessary.

Embedded within Chinese leaders\' convoluted, yet vague statements to Washington about North Korea is a simple message: Talk with Pyongyang.

U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry\'s weekend discussions with officials in Beijing offered up the usual encouraging but familiarly noncommittal language on North Korea, emphasizing Beijing\'s desire to strike a balance between easing tensions on the Korean Peninsula while not appearing to side against its prickly communist ally Pyongyang.

But while neither side offered details of their exchanges, Beijing is communicating its strong desire for some form of direct contact between the U.S. and North Korea as a means of defusing the ongoing crisis over North Korea\'s nuclear threats that have prompted a massive show of force by the U.S. and South Korea.

World Scientists Urge Key Actions for Achieving Food Security in a Changing Climate http://ccafs.cgiar.org/commission/reports/ To achieve food security in a changing climate, the global community must operate within three limits: the quantity of food that can be produced under a given climate; the quantity needed by a growing and changing population; and the effect of food production on the climate. At present the planet operates outside that safe space, as witnessed by the enormous number of people who are undernourished. If current trends in population growth, diets, crop yields and climate change continue, the world will still be outside this 'safe operating space' in 2050. Humanity must urgently work to enlarge the safe space and also move the planet into the safe space. The Commission on Sustainable Agriculture and Climate Change has a produced a set of concrete policy actions to transform the food system. http://www.euronews.com/ American diplomacy is moving this weekend from the South Korean capital Seoul to Beijing and Tokyo, as tension surrounding North Korea's ongoing military threats continues. There are fears that Pyongyang may use Monday's birthday of the country's founder to launch a missile. "We are all united in the fact that North Korea will not be accepted as a nuclear power. The rhetoric that we are hearing from North Korea is simply unacceptable by any standard," he said. Pyongyang has turned that rhetoric on Tokyo, which has authorised the military to destroy any North Korean missile that threatens Japanese territory. State media said Japan was in North Korea's line of fire, promising "nuclear flames." Tourists visiting the demilitarised zone dividing the two Koreas were joined by four former South Korean spies who spent time in the North, during and after the Korean War. They and modern military experts alike are in the dark as to the reality behind the stark nuclear threats still emanating from Pyongyang. "It is more serious than the past," said one of the ex-spies, 62-year-old Park Young-Rae. "At that time a reasonable man was ruling North Korea, but North Korean leadership is not reasonable nowadays, so we are more worried." The judge in the retrial of former Egyptian president Hosni Mubarak has withdrawn from the case and referred it to another court, abruptly ending the first session on Saturday. Judge Mustafa Hassan Abdullah announced his decision at the start of the retrial at a police academy on the outskirts of Cairo, where the 84-year old former president had earlier been flown in by a helicopter. The judge said he had decided to refer the case to the Cairo appeals court as he felt "unease" in reviewing the case. Protests and clashes erupted both inside and outside the courtroom as the judge made his announcement. Mubarak is facing retrial on charges of complicity in the murder of protesters killed in the uprising that unseated him. Mubarak, wearing brown-tinted glasses, waved from inside the courtroom cage in his court appearance. He was airlifted to the court from a Cairo hospital. His two sons and former interior minister, currently held in prison for separate cases, were also in the courtroom cage. Mubarak, his interior minister Habib al-Adly and six security chiefs are in the dock again facing these charges. The toppled despot's sons Gamal and Alaa -- once symbols of power and wealth -- will also be retried on corruption charges. Another defendant, business tycoon Hussein Salem, is being tried in absentia. Three thousand soldiers and police officers were deployed to secure the court, in addition to 150 armored vehicles, Interior Minister Mohamed Ibrahim said, according to news site Egypt Independent.

Embedded within Chinese leaders' convoluted, yet vague statements to Washington about North Korea is a simple message: Talk with Pyongyang. U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry's weekend discussions with officials in Beijing offered up the usual encouraging but familiarly noncommittal language on North Korea, emphasizing Beijing's desire to strike a balance between easing tensions on the Korean Peninsula while not appearing to side against its prickly communist ally Pyongyang. But while neither side offered details of their exchanges, Beijing is communicating its strong desire for some form of direct contact between the U.S. and North Korea as a means of defusing the ongoing crisis over North Korea's nuclear threats that have prompted a massive show of force by the U.S. and South Korea. "North Korea wants to talk, so why not talk?" said Shen Dingli, a regional security expert and director of the Center for American Studies at Shanghai's Fudan University. The question for China, Shen said, is how to make such discussions come about, adding that China is unlikely to make such calls too explicit for fear of putting either side in an embarrassing quandary.
