Various news conference STORYLINE: Two days after a major victory in a key northern city of Mazar-e-Sharif, opposition forces claimed they captured their former headquarters of Taloqan as Taliban soldiers retreated toward Kabul and Islamic militia strongholds in the south, a senior official of the anti-Taliban Northern Alliance said on Sunday. Dr. Abdullah Abdullah, the foreign minister of Afghanistan's opposition government, told reporters that opposition forces on Sunday captured the provincial capitals of Taloqan, Bamiyan, Qala-i-Nau and Chekcheran, in addition to key districts in the northern provinces of Takhar and Baglan. Taloqan, the capital of Takhar province, fell Sunday after a fierce battle outside the city with Taliban forces. Once that line of defence crumbled, opposition fighters swiftly occupied the city, dr. Abdullah said. Dr. Abdullah Abdullah said he could not rule out an advance on the Afghan capital Kabul in the next few days. He added that the anti-Taliban forces have reinforced the front lines north of the capital Kabul with 5,000 more troops. Asked whether Northern Alliance forces grouped just north of Kabul would move forward in coming days, Foreign Minister Dr Abdullah Abdullah told a news conference: "We do not rule it out." He also would not be drawn on whether his forces would move into Kabul in the case of political vacuum in Kabul. "A political vacuum is a different situation and we have to consult with our Afghan partners and our international partners, mainly the UN," he said. Speaking in Jabal Saraj, Abdullah said he had been surprised at how quickly his forces had made gains in the north in the last 48 hours.
