Bolshoi Ballet-1913-Yekaterina Geltzer and Vasiliy Tikhomirov-Pas de deux-Amazing film !
Yekaterina Vasilyevna Geltzer (November 2, 1876 - December 12, 1962) / Екатери́на Васи́льевна Ге́льцер was a prima ballerina of the Bolshoi Ballet who danced in the theatre from 1898 to 1935. She worked with Marius Petipa, Sergei Diaghilev, and Reinhold Glière. After the Russian Revolution of 1917, she helped to preserve the art of ballet in Russia. She was the first ballet dancer to receive the title of "People's Artist of Russia" (1925). Her most famous post-revolutionary role was a Chinese dancer in the premiere of Gliere's Red Poppy. This production was staged by her husband Vasily Tikhomirov for her 50th birthday. In 1943, she was awarded a Stalin Prize and also received an Order of Lenin and an Order of the Red Banner of Labour. Once backstage at the Bolshoi Theatre, and well past the age of 60, Geltzer was heard telling her colleagues "help me get myself up en pointe, after that I know what to do." Vasiliy Dmitriyevich Tikhomirov (1876--1956) / Васи́лий Дми́триевич Тихоми́ров was a dancer (from 1895) and a choreographer (from 1913) with the Bolshoi Ballet of Moscow, Russia. His most distinguished production was The Red Poppy (1927), with his wife Yekaterina Geltzer in the main role. He and Geltzer were buried in the Novodevichy Cemetery. The Bolshoi Theatre (Russian: Большо́й теа́тр, tr. Bol'shoy Teatr, IPA: [bɐlʲˈʂoj tʲɪˈatr] is a historic theatre in Moscow, Russia, designed by architect Joseph Bové, which holds performances of ballet and opera. The theatre's original name was the Imperial Bolshoi Theatre of Moscow, while the St. Petersburg Bolshoi Theatre (demolished in 1886), was called the Imperial Bolshoi Kamenny Theatre. Franz Peter Schubert (German pronunciation: [ˈfʁant͡s ˈʃuːbɐt]; 31 January 1797 -- 19 November 1828) was an Austrian composer. In a short lifespan of less than 32 years, Schubert was a prolific composer, writing some 600 Lieder, ten complete or nearly complete symphonies, liturgical music, operas, incidental music and a large body of chamber and solo piano music. Appreciation of his music while he was alive was limited to a relatively small circle of admirers in Vienna, but interest in his work increased significantly in the decades immediately after his death. Felix Mendelssohn, Robert Schumann, Franz Liszt, Johannes Brahms and other 19th-century composers discovered and championed his works. Today, Schubert is ranked among the greatest composers of the early Romantic era and, as such, is one of the most frequently performed composers of the early nineteenth century. Boris Shtokolov, "Gremin's Aria" Eugene Onegin
Boris Shtokolov (1930-2005 was one of the great basses of the 20th century. Not too well known in the US because so many great singers of the Soviet period did not sing abroad, and all too often their recordings were not known here either. But ask any Russian opera lover who the greatest basses in opera were in the 20th century, and, be assured, you will hear about Boris Shtokolov! He sang for 30 years, between 1959 and 1989 at the Mariinsky, starring in such roles as Ruslan, Don Basilio, Boris Godunov, The Demon, Prince Gremin, Mefistofele, and others. So popular and respected was he that he was awarded the titles of People's Artist of the Soviet Union, State Prize of the USSR, the Order of Lenin, The Order of the Patriotic War, and others! Truly a Russian superstar of opera! He also did a lot of folk singing, as did Chaliapin before him.- published: 11 Jan 2014
