Art and College 2: BFA vs BA? Art School vs Art Department?
The two most common arts degrees offered in the US are a BFA, or a bachelor's in Fine Art, and a BA, or a Bachelor of Arts. Both may be described in college materials as "Fine Art" or "Studio" program, but the BFA is the truly studio-based degree, with some academics, whereas the BA is truly an academic degree with some studio art in the curriculum.
Neither the BFA or BA degree will necessarily make YOU more or less of an artist/ more or less employable. And when I was younger I didn't feel that way, but my experience has demonstrated otherwise. It's not the degree—it's all you, whether you have the inclination or drive to pursue your work outside of class/ after school- whether you take and make opportunities, whether you have the discipline and tenacity to work through the ups and downs of your career—and that's true no matter what you choose to study in college- art, accounting, or astrophysics.
So how do you choose between the BFA or BA? Well, the first answer to that is whether or not you have a portfolio. Many BFA programs require one. Many BA programs do not. Second, do you want to spend most of your time in the studio or in an academic class? A BFA has 60-70 credits or more in the studio whereas a BA will typically require 25-35 studio credits. So if you go for the BFA, you'll spend about 75% of your time in the studio. If you go for your BA, you'll spend about 75% of your time in an academic setting.
Who do you want your peers to be? Do you want to be surrounded by artists 24/7 in the thick of it or do you want a more academic diverse student body? Third, ask yourself, what do you want to do for the next 4 years? Not life. 4 years. What do you think want your college experience to be like? It's not like you only get one shot at this- you can change your mind after you get there. Students do it all the time. It's the new norm.

Otis College Summer of Art Program
Otis College's Summer of Art is an intensive, four-week, pre-college program designed for serious young artists aged 15 years and older who wish to strengthen and enhance their art and design skills as well as build their portfolio.
Small classes ensure personalized, in-depth learning. Courses are taught by award-winning practicing professionals, many of whom teach in Otis' Bachelor of Fine Arts and Master of Fine Arts programs. Three units of college credit are awarded upon successful completion of the program.
At the end of the four weeks, with guidance from their instructors, students select their best work for the final exhibition, giving them the experience of being part of a gallery show while sharing their artwork with their peers, family and friends.
Situated in Los Angeles, California, the Otis Summer of Art program takes place during the month of July. Housing is available for students who are 15-17 years old.
Scholarships are available.

Dante Ventresca & Rebecca Hutton: The Invisible Learning Environment
Dante Ventresca is the Founder and Creative Director of Theater of Inclusion, which began in 2000 as way of bringing diverse people together to work on creative projects. Whether it be a theatrical performance, a large-scale mural, or just a thoughtful conversation, Ventresca crafts experiences that allow each individual to identify, practice, and contribute their strengths to a group project.
As the ninth of eleven children in his family, Ventresca learned early in life the value of teamwork and shared leadership. He combines these interpersonal skills with knowledge gained while obtaining his Bachelor in Fine Arts from Indiana University in 1982, to teach how skills and tools employed by artists can be used to solve problems in other areas of life.
Ventresca designs Theater of Inclusion retreats that address the development of soft skills in creative ways. This includes making temporary sculptures as part of a conflict resolution program for elementary school students and corporate team building through the creation of abstract paintings.
Ventresca's work has earned him the Creative Renewal Fellowship from the Arts Council of Indianapolis, two Individual Artist Project Grants from the Indiana Arts Commission, and a NUVO Cultural Vision award.
Rebecca Hutton is Theater of Inclusion's (TOI) innovative Chief Executive Officer. Her creative thinking, attention to detail, and genuine care for a client's experience set the tone for TOI's commitment to providing high quality experiences.
After studying ballet at Point Park College and performing with a professional modern dance company, Hutton returned to her hometown of Indianapolis, Indiana, where she began collaborating with her TOI business partner Dante Ventresca.
Believing that the arts are comprised of transferable skills such as organization, inquiry, problem solving, cooperation, and communication, Hutton has provided the guiding vision for Theater of Inclusion since 2000.
Hutton has administered TOI projects for the 2012 Indianapolis Super Bowl Host Committee, the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra, Indianapolis Museum of Art, and many other clients.
Her work has been recognized with numerous awards including the Creative Renewal Fellowship from the Arts Council of Indianapolis, the Indiana Governor's Award for Tomorrow's Leaders, and the Indianapolis Business Journal's Forty Under 40.
Big Idea: "The Invisible Learning Environment"
When we discuss learning environments we often talk about the design of physical space: where to put the walls, how to organize the chairs, how to create common spaces. But what about the relationships that take place within those walls? Can we be as intentional about how we treat one another? How do we design interaction expectations in order to facilitate meaningful, supportive working relationships? By teaching the mechanics of respectful behavior we can create richer learning experiences.
