Barriers Part 31 (Episode 11.1) with guest Sian Phillips
Mrs Dalgleish arrives unexpectedly at Mr Whitaker's Newcastle office. An unforgettable performance by Sian Phillips as Mrs Dalgleish. In the second volume of her autobiography, "Public Places: My Life in the Theatre, with Peter O'Toole and Beyond", Phillips writes of her time working on Barriers: "I read a script that made me laugh so hard I almost fell out of bed. It was one episode of a very long and successful TV series called Barriers...I was to play a slightly dazed, glamorous middle-European retired opera singer ... Who had dreamed up this extraordinary character? I turned back the pages and read 'William Corlett'. I looked him up. Former actor, theatre playwright, award-winning novelist, award-winning TV writer ... "It would be lovely to work again with Paul, one of the best actors in the country" (Paul Rogers - Mr Whitaker - had worked with Phillips before). "I picked up a dress from St Laurent, negotiated the hire of a sable coat for myself, and with no time to fit a wig, packed a Graham Smith turban" (More in Part 32)

Barriers Part 32 (Episode 11.2) with guest Sian Phillips
Mrs Dalgleish, Mr Whitaker and Billy have a picnic at Bamburgh. Billy learns more about his mother, and his grandfather, "the maestro Szabo". (See Part 31 also) Mrs Dalgleish, wrote Sian Phillips (in her autogiography), was "a widow who'd been married to a very small, rich man who left her lots of money". She had a chauffeur, "very young and beautiful, in sprayed on trousers". "In Newcastle, Maggie Bottomley, the producer, gave a lavish dinner for Paul [Rogers], Patti Lawrence (who was playing the secretary), William Corlett and myself. It was a riotous affair and we ate and drank too much ... I couldn't wait for morning when we would drive to Bamburgh Castle and begin shooting. Mr Corlett - Bill already - had made me laugh more than anyone I'd met for a very, very long time. "We had a wonderful time, freezing all over Northumbria (thank God for the sables). Maggie provided real champagne for the picnic scenes ... and every night Bill and I laid into huge dinners ... I felt I'd acquired a brother". (From 'Public Places - My Life in the Theatre, with Peter O'Toole and Beyond'.)
