The Strugglers - the cascade range
A great song by The Strugglers with images from the superb Polish movie, The Manuscript Found in Saragossa.
Under the spell of traveling again
To see how I am all that remains
Always in the process
Of pain mistaking progress
I drove alongside California skylines
Moving on before there was time to think twice
The stopping points I would find
Moving so fast, I could only question what was mine
And if I ever came up with an answer
Then it was the painful pieces of
Everything ever asked of me
Up to the mountains through the Cascade Range
Coming down in the hours through the plains
No other places between could show me anything
But theyre passing too fast to be seen
I miss the solid ground of a hometown
I can study to no end to find out
Its progress inside I needed to move
Oh to move, whats more, invisibly

For a while I didn't think my Broken Top flight could ever be topped. However, on this day I flew from Central Oregon to Detroit Lake crossing over Mt Jefferson and the Cascade Mountain Range. I'm not one to hoot and hollar, but I did find myself on several occasions yelling out in pure joy. Even though I flew it, lived it, recorded it and edited it, I've watched this video over 100 times finding something new to focus on and enjoy every time.
I covered 79 miles hitting a max elevation of 10,762 feet in 2hr 20mins, starting with 5 gallons of fuel and landing with 2 still onboard. I would have loved to fly longer, but it did get a bit bumpy near Detroit Lake causing a bit of air sickness along with some dry heaving. Even if I was air sick for the entire trip, I'd so do it again and I'm sure I will.
I can always use more flying buddies. If anybody is interested in meeting up or getting started in the sport of powered paragliding, just drop me a line. More information, photos and videos can be found on Byron's website at http://www.ppgfun.com
I'm never opposed to being sponsored or selling some of my raw footage. I can always use cash for more equipment, warm weather gear, camera's, computer's, editing software, fuel and of course travel so I can hit more locations. Just contact me if you're interested in donating to the cause or bartering a bit.
Video taken with GoPro Hero2
Settings were 720p/60fps
Edited on Final Cut Pro X at a frame rate of 23.98 after optimizing media from H.264 to ProRes 442 upon import. I am then able to take advantage of Conform Speed effects in FCPX dropping the speed to 40% when needed for my slow motion shots without effecting image quality.

======================
Many have asked about entering the sport, training, equipment, etc... Hope the following info helps.
Proper training...
Don't try learning on your own from watching a few videos.
Don't do a half day, 1 day or 3 day training.
Real training is a good 6-9 days and usually runs just over $2k.
If you find an instructor who will have you flying after the first day, run away. You should be on the ground for the first 3-5 days learning nothing but glider control. Only after you can control your wing with your eyes closed, then and only then should you add a motor. Yup, you will be flying and you want to be properly trained.
As for equipment, I'm happy to share what I fly and why. Like any sport, you have options. There is cheap equipment, equipment that lacks safety and higher end cadillac equipment. At the end of the day, I'm happy to fly with anybody who wants to fly regardless of choice.
As for equipment cost...
For what I fly, you can get into the sport on a good used setup for $7k-9k or $12k-$13k new which includes your motor, wing and reserve. Can't beat that price for personal flight. Best thing is it all packs up as small as 22x22x33 inches and fits in the trunk of your car if needed.
If you want more info, just hit me up or check out my brothers website. http://www.ppgfun.com/

The Cascade Mountains
The stunning Cascade Mountains of Washington State, from Mount Rainier to Mount Shuksan in spring and summer of 2012, including the North Cascades and the Stillaguamish and Sauk Rivers, along with Ruby Creek (part of the upper Skagit River). The North Cascade Mountains are sometimes referred to as the "American Alps" because of their incredible peaks and dramatic sharp spires.

Rocky Top Mountain HIke Cascade Range near Gates, Oregon
There used to be a fire lookout in the old days on Rockytop, but it since has been removed many years ago. We used to hike this mountain and hunt it cross country. Lately however, the Sierra Club has made a decent trail so anyone with enough breath and energy can make the climb. Its rated a difficult hike but if you take your breathers and water with you, you should make it. It is very similar in energy output as the hike up Diamond Head on Oahu. The day we made this hike, a hunter had wounded a bear and was on the run, so I carried a sidearm but usually I wouldnt think it necessary.
