Somalia's port city Kismayo
It is not quite business as usual in the streets of Somalia's port city Kismayo. Some shops remain closed and people walk the streets cautiously. There is an air of uncertainty on the streets with people not knowing what's next for the countries third largest port city and once stronghold of the al Shabaab militant group.
The al Qaeda linked group fled their economic hub as the Somali National Army (SNA) and allies with support from Kenyan solders from the African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) rolled in and captured the city on Tuesday (2 October.)
SOUNDBITE (English) Col Cyrus Oguna, KDF Spokesman:
"The situation is Kismayo is relatively stable, however there is still a lot of work that needs to be done. You get the impression that the people do not feel very secure about the new dispensation, so as you walk across town you get the impression that they are kind of apprehensive about the new forces that are on the ground, but yes the security is improving but a lot more need to be done."
The SNA and pro government forces are patrolling the streets and alleys of the city in an effort to beef up security. They have launched search operations to weed out suspected al Shabaab fighters and supporters still believed to be hiding in the city and passing on information to the group. Two men arrested by the SNA today (4 October) are believed to have been involved on the grenade explosions that happened on Tuesday (2 October).
SOUNDBITE (English) Abdi Noor, Somali Nation Army Soldier
"These guys are in town, yesterday when they threw a bomb into our car, we found one of them, so that one is giving us the full information about these guys, where they stay and all. There are about two hundred of them still in town, we are investigation and we keep struggling to get all two hundred."
. Although the al Shabaab extremist group retreated from the city, they have vowed retaliatory attacks. AMISOM troops are supporting the government forces and defending strategic locations like the airport and the seaport.

The quest to cleanse Kismayo
http://www.ntv.co.ke
While there is growing concern over homeland security, back in Somalia, the government there and Amisom troops are reporting another victory in the war against the Al-Shabaab. The troops have secured the town of Wanla Weyn on the Afgoye to Baidoa corridor. The capture comes just a day after troops begun their 211 kilometer advance from Afgoye to Baidoa. The move is expected to prevent fleeing Al-Shabaab insurgents from seeking refuge in the Shabelle region. In Kismayo however troops continue with efforts to try and make the city safe for residents. SOMALI'S KISMAYO town seized from Al Shabaab, SOMALI NATIONAL ARMY TROOPS REMAIN
Published on Feb 9, 2013
In August 2012, Somali government forces backed by AMISOM troops from the Kenyan contingent launched an amphibious landing into Kismayo town putting to an end Al-Shabaab's five-year stay in the strategic southern town.
Six months later, the town is fully under the control of Kenyan troops and forces from the Somali national army. However, security remains the biggest threat for the locals. AMISOM argues that explosions emanating from hand grenades and improvised explosive devices that used to be rather common in Kismayo town have drastically reduced.
Meanwhile, the current interim administration in Kismayo town hopes to improve the security of its people by liberating the entire Juba region from the Al-Shabaab fighters. They say that Al-Shabaab threat still remains until they lose all the areas they control.
As for AMISOM and the local administration, all they hope for now is that the people of Kismayo will return to their homes and rebuild the town after decades of civil war.

Kismayo Hospital suffers effects of civil war
http://www.youtube.com/superlattestnews
Six months after the port city of Kismayo in Somalia was liberated from the Al-Shabaab fighters, locals in the town are still suffering from lack of basic and vital health services.
We toured the strategic coastal city of Kismayo, located some 500kms south of the capital Mogadishu. Our first visit was Kismayo General Hospital, the only functional health institution in Somalia's third biggest town.
