Sukkot -- It is one of the Biblical feasts mentioned in the Torah and one of the most important of the Jewish Holidays. Also known as the Feast of Tabernacles or the Feast of Booths, this appointed Festival is a time to remember when the children of Israel wandered in the wilderness, living in temporary dwellings after they left Egypt. Sukkot: Back to Basics
Sukkot is the happiest Jewish holiday. We live in huts, have parties, wave a lulav and etrog around and eat tons of food. What could be wrong with that?
King Solomon stars in the book of Ecclesiastes, which can get kind of gloomy. And we read it during Sukkot!
Hadara Levin-Areddy, a great Israeli singer/songwriter, connects the dots, singing about sadness, joy, and what's new under the sun.

Lyrics by Ben R.:
It's a beautiful night
We're looking for something fun to do
Hey baby
I think I wanna build a booth
Is it the stars in the sky?
Or is it these dancing Jews?
Well who cares, baby
I think we're livin' in a booth
Well, in my tabernacle
I got everything we need
For the show
With my Etro-oog
So, come on now
Who cares if it rains
Gotta whole lotta chains
Don't you know
This Schach doesn't go
It stays on, yo
Don't say no no no no no
Say lu lav lav lav lav lav
And we'll go go go go go
If you're shakin', like I'm shakin'
Cause it's a beautiful night
We're looking for something fun to do
Hey baby
I think I wanna build a booth
Is it the stars in the sky
Or is it these dancing Jews?
Who cares, baby
I think we're livin' in a booth
Campin out here
There's nothing to fear
We'll go far
Under the stars
It's all right girl.
If we wake up and the
Sukkah breaks up, that's cool
No, I won't blame you
Let's just run yo
Don't say no no no no no
Say lu lav lav lav lav lav
And we'll go go go go
If you're shakin, like I'm shakin'
U'shavtem mayim besasson (draw water with joy)
Mimaynei hayshua (from the wellsprings of salvation)
Waters overflow
From the fountains of salvation
Oooh....
Just dwell in booths
Say it right now baby,
Say it right now baby
Just dwell in booths
Say it right now baby,
Say it right now!

Sukkot Fun - Strange Sukkahs!
A 32ft tall Sukkah? Sukkah on a boat? On a camel? See them for real in this video clip! Filmed at the Sukkah exhibit at Neot Kedumim, the Biblical nature reserve in Israel, which features the many unusual Sukkahs described in the Mishna - some of which are "kosher" and some not.
This clip is from our "Jewish Holiday Celebration!" DVD. In the DVD, Rebbetzin Tap (Kerry Bar-Cohn) discovers a holiday apartment - with a different Jewish holiday behind every door! The shots of singing and dancing toward the beginning of this clip are a preview of the song "Shake The Lulav", which you can see in full on the DVD, available in Judaica stores or by visiting http://www.rebbetzintap.com.
Also, visit Neot Kedumim (located between Jerusalem & Tel Aviv) and see these Sukkahs and more for yourself! It's a great exhibit. Go to http://www.neot-kedumim.org.il for more info.

The Joys of Sukkot - The Four Species Market
Infolive.tv visited the Sukkot four species market where throngs gathered to purchase the species to adorn their sukkot. The sukkot holiday has a dual significance, historical and agricultural. It commemorates the forty year period the children of Israel wandered in the desert living in temporar shelters and is also referred to as the harvest festival. The four species represent four different kinds of Jews, those who study Torah and those who keep mitsvot.09/25/07

Vassar Sukkot Project
To celebrate Sukkot during Vassar's sesquicentennial year, Vassar art students designed and fabricated two creative variations on the traditional Jewish "sukkah." Rena Blumenthal, Assistant Director of the Office of Religious and Spiritual Life and the Rachlin Advisor to Jewish Students, developed the project with Tyler Rowland '00, adjunct assistant professor of art. The only limitations they placed on the students were the traditional guidelines based on Jewish law--that each sukkah had to have at least three walls and a roof made of organic materials through which the stars could be seen at night.
