Suicide Attacks In honor of Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel in Afghanistan
PLS subscribe for the best in news and entertainment...thanks for watching. At least 18 Afghans -- including a policeman and several children -- were killed in two deadly suicide attacks, one of which struck the city of Kabul as newly appointed US Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel was visiting a nearby military base.
The first attack happened around 9 a.m. Saturday outside the gate to the Afghan Ministry of Defense headquarters in Kabul.
According to General Zahir Azimi of the Afghan National Army, the suicide attacker rode a bicycle towards the gate before detonating his explosives.
Nine civilians were killed in the attack.
The aftermath of the scene was chaotic. The explosion was so strong it left large shrapnel holes in nearby concrete blast walls.
While ambulances rushed in, sirens wailing, to reach the wounded, Afghan soldiers in full body armor quickly cordoned off the area.

Eyewitnesses report hearing several rounds of gunfire after the initial explosion, though it is unclear whether Afghan soldiers were firing at a specific target.
"I was near the Defense Ministry compound when there was a powerful explosion," Abdul Ghador, an eyewitness, said.
"I saw dead bodies and wounded victims lying everywhere. Then random shooting started," he said. "It was a very powerful explosion and there were a lot of vehicles in the area."
Hagel was in the middle of a security briefing at a nearby military base when the explosion went off.
According to a Pentagon spokesperson, the briefing continued uninterrupted.
Reporters traveling to Kabul to cover Hagel's visit -- his first official visit as Secretary of Defense -- were in the middle of a briefing at Camp Eggers, a different military base from the one where Hagel was at, when the explosion occurred.
They were whisked to a secure room in the basement while the base was put on lockdown.
"We're in a warzone," Hagel later told reporters. "I've been in war, so shouldn't be surprised when a bomb goes off or there's an explosion."
A Taliban spokesman quickly claimed responsibility for the attack.
"The attack was a message to him," Zabiullah Mujahid said in an email.
Half an hour after the Kabul explosion, a suicide bomber struck a joint Afghan patrol in Khost province.
One policeman and eight teenage boys on their way to school were killed in the attack.

The latest in its tradition of bespoke cars, the Veneno is the fastest, most powerful Lamborghini ever built. At the Geneva Motor Show, where it was revealed Monday night, Lamborghini CEO Stephan Winkelmann made sure to rev the engine as he drove the car out on stage.
Rest assured, the Veneno, which is named for an infamous fighting bull, sounds like a Lamborghini.

But why build a car for just three people?
"It gives you a high degree of freedom in terms of the design, you can test materials and new technologies, it has a halo effect on the other products," said Winkelmann. "Last but not least, you're fulfilling dreams, at least for a few people."
A carmaker like Lamborghini isn't immune from the travails of the economy, but sales of high-end cars, like many luxury products, have been surprisingly resilient. And a one-off like the Veneno creates a lot of buzz - or a halo - for the rest of the brand. Lamborghini is also part of the highly successful Volkswagen Group, which is weathering the European storm better than others.
Two of the buyers - both Americans - were in Geneva to get their first look at the car, having signed the contract long ago.
Antoine Dominic, who is the principal in a Lamborghini dealership on Long Island, and Kris Singh II, a Floridian who is the managing director of investment firm Tequesta Investments, both have collections of exotic cars and both plan to actually use the car.
Under the hood: Powering the Veneno is a 12-cylinder engine and a 7-speed transmission with five different driving modes. Lamborghini says the Veneno can reach speeds of 220 miles per hour (355 kilometers per hour) and accelerates from 0-60 mph in 2.8 seconds.
Outside: The body is carbon-fibre to keep the car as light as possible and allow for that quick acceleration. The shape is angular and muscular, with cut-outs sprinkled throughout and a back fin that fades into the roof. The rear looks like the bottom of a rocket ship, and the car nearly kisses the ground it sits so low.
Inside: Scissor doors open up to reveal an interior also clad in carbon-fiber. The feel is suede-like throughout, but the dashboard has a fairly standard look. You don't feel as if you're about to take off.
Cheers: The customers are thrilled - though they have yet to actually get behind the wheel. "It's rolling artwork, it's like owning the Mona Lisa," said Singh. "I look forward to driving it."
Dominic said that can be hard since it turns so many heads. He plans to take it out at 5 AM on a Sunday when he finally gets it.
Open questions: Lamborghini is billing the Veneno as a race car that just happens to be street legal - but how closely they've hewn to racing technology is unclear. "It sounds like they're trying to use the cache of a racing vehicle but not go the whole way," said Paul Newton, an analyst with IHS. Automotive.

O'Reilly Slams AP's 'Biased' Romney Photo: Obama Benefiting From Nonexistent 'Fair' Reporting
On his show Tuesday night, Bill O'Reilly took to his Talking Points segment to join in on criticism of the Associated Press' recent photo of Mitt Romney (which made for jokes aplenty). Taking aim at the media in general, O'Reilly further chastised the AP and others for focusing on the outrage du jour instead of the battle between "capitalism and quasi-socialism."
RELATED: AP's 'Unflattering' Romney Photo Elicits Chuckles, Jokes...And Criticism
O'Reilly called the photo a "foolish shot" that makes Romney "the butt of stupid jokes. Pardon the pun." It's "a cheap shot," he said. And clearly not the picture of objectivity. The AP, which is one of the largest news wires in the country, is "biased against Mitt Romney." Newspapers all across the country carry AP stories and photos every day, and thus this is a "huge advantage" for President Obama, O'Reilly remarked.
But "perhaps the best example of what the national media has become in America," O'Reilly said, is the Big Bird debacle. In repeatedly hitting Romney for his remarks about cutting funding to PBS, Obama "apparently thinks he has an opportunity with this controversy," he said — particularly noting Obama's line about Romney wanting to let Wall Street "run wild."
Obama and those who share his view on the topic are choosing to throw the baby out with the bathwater, O'Reilly argued. Instead of reforming Wall Street with effective oversight, they are attacking it.
Within that issue lies the central point the media should really be concentrating on, O'Reilly said: the "battle between capitalism and quasi-socialism." That's "the real story" in this election, he asserted.
But the AP and others are now "so invested" in reelecting Obama, O'Reilly said, that "fair, responsible and insightful reporting has nearly vanished." And Obama's benefiting from it.

Mississippi HIV baby cured by treatment
A Mississippi baby born with HIV more than two years ago appears to be the first documented case of a child's being cured of the virus, according to doctors and scientists.
The unidentified child has now been "functionally cured" and has been off medication for about a year with no signs of the HIV infection. If the child remains healthy, it would mark only the second time in the world's history that a person has been cured of HIV, which is the virus that causes AIDS.
The landmark case was announced Sunday at the 2013 Conference on Retroviruses and Opportunistic Infections in Atlanta.
Dr. Deborah Persaud of Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore was one of the lead researchers and author of the report, which was released by The Foundation for AIDS Research (amfAR).
The infant was diagnosed with HIV at birth to a mother who did not receive prenatal care or HIV treatment, Dr. Rowena Johnston, director of amfAR, told ABC News.
The infant was transferred to the University of Mississippi Medical Center and started on antiretroviral treatment about 30 hours after birth. Doctors took the apparently unusual step of prescribing three aggressive drugs (AZT, 3TC, nevirapine) at once after birth.
Johnston points to the early intervention of the three medications as the difference-maker.

Initial HIV viral load tests were high and then expectedly decreased in the first month. Viral loads were detectable three times and became undetectable by one month of age.
The baby was on treatment and in care until 12 to 15 months of age, at which point the baby was lost to follow-up after doctors lost contact with the mother and the baby stopped receiving any medication. The baby returned for care at 23 months of age.
Surprisingly, viral loads were still undetectable, despite being off treatment for almost a year.
Johnston said the results were all the more shocking because doctors do not usually recommend stopping treatment at any time in children with HIV from birth.
The results surprised Dr. Hannah Gay, a pediatric HIV specialist at the University of Mississippi, who was treating the child.
"My first thought was to panic. I thought, 'Oh my goodness, I have been treating a child who is not actually infected,'" she said.
A battery of "highly sensitive" tests confirmed the absence of HIV, according to a news release.
Dr. Anthony Fauci, with the National Institutes of Health, cautions that more studies are needed before calling the results a breakthrough.
"You have to be careful because this is just a single case and although the data looked pretty convincing that you got to be careful that this may not be broadly applicable to other situations," Fauci told ABC News Radio.
In Mississippi, Gay gives the child a check-up every few months. "I just check for the virus and keep praying that it stays gone," she told The Associated Press.
The mother's HIV is being controlled with medication and she is "quite excited for her child," Gay added.
The only other documented case of an HIV cure to date remains that of Timothy Brown, the so-called "Berlin patient."
