Chinese leadership takes on an increasingly assertive tone
With its growing economic might, China is seen as increasingly turning away from the West and its demands for reform. This shift was reflected in some tough talk this weekend by the Chinese premier, as the annual meeting of China's parliament drew to a close. For more, Daljit Dhaliwal interviews Michael Kulma. http://worldfocus.org/blog/2010/03/15/chinese-leadership-takes-on-an-increasingly-assertive-tone/10075/

Frequencies for relaxed alertness.
Binaural beats or binaural tones are auditory processing artifacts, or apparent sounds, the perception of which arises in the brain for specific physical stimuli. This effect was discovered in 1839 by Heinrich Wilhelm Dove, and earned greater public awareness in the late 20th century based on claims that binaural beats could help induce relaxation, meditation, creativity and other desirable mental states. The effect on the brainwaves depends on the difference in frequencies of each tone: for example, if 300 Hz was played in one ear and 310 in the other, then the binaural beat would have a frequency of 10 Hz.
The brain produces a phenomenon resulting in low-frequency pulsations in the amplitude and sound localization of a perceived sound when two tones at slightly different frequencies are presented separately, one to each of a subject's ears, using stereo headphones. A beating tone will be perceived, as if the two tones mixed naturally, out of the brain. The frequencies of the tones must be below 1,000 hertz for the beating to be noticeable. The difference between the two frequencies must be small (less than or equal to 30 Hz) for the effect to occur; otherwise, the two tones will be heard separately and no beat will be perceived.
Binaural beats are of interest to neurophysiologists investigating the sense of hearing.
Binaural beats reportedly influence the brain in more subtle ways through the entrainment of brainwaves and have been claimed to reduce anxiety and to provide other health benefits such as control over pain.
Isochronic tones are regular beats of a single tone used for brainwave entrainment. Similar to monaural beats, the interference pattern that produces the beat is outside the brain so headphones are not required for entrainment to be effective. They differ from monaural beats, which are constant sine wave pulses rather than entirely separate pulses of a single tone. As the contrast between noise and silence is more pronounced than the constant pulses of monaural beats, the stimulus is stronger and has a greater effect on brain entrainment.
Isochronic tones work by emitting sound at regular intervals. This excites the thalamus and causes the brain to duplicate the frequency of the Isochronic tones, changing its thought patterns.
The thalamus (from Greek θάλαμος, "inner chamber") is a midline symmetrical structure within the brains of vertebrates including humans, situated between the cerebral cortex and midbrain. Its function includes relaying sensory and motor signals to the cerebral cortex, along with the regulation of consciousness, sleep, and alertness. The thalamus surrounds the third ventricle. It is the main product of the embryonic diencephalon.

Walking Dead: The Game free download for Nokia (Symbian), iPhone/iPad, Android and Windows Phone smartphones. Download at http://tinyurl.com/WalkingDeadMobileGame with game info and screenshots. Enjoy!
· Game description
The game takes place in the same fictional world as the comic, with events occurring shortly after the onset of the zombie apocalypse in Georgia. However, most of the characters are original to the game, which centers on university professor and convicted murderer Lee Everett, who helps to rescue and subsequently care for a young girl named Clementine. Kirkman provided oversight for the game's story to ensure it corresponded to the tone of the comic, but allowed Telltale to handle the bulk of the developmental work and story specifics. Three characters from the original comic book series make in-game appearances; Hershel Greene, Shawn Greene and Glenn Rhee.
Unlike many point-and-click adventure games, The Walking Dead does not emphasize puzzle solving, but instead focuses on story and character development. The story is affected by both the dialogue choices of the player and their actions during quick time events, which can often lead to, for example, certain characters being killed, or an adverse change in the disposition of a certain character or characters towards Lee. The choices made by the player carry over from episode to episode.

I was hired to shoot a 30 second spot for a local Rhode Island television network. This network broadcasts most of the Providence College Friars' basketball games.
The purpose of this commercial was to promote the station's coverage of the college team in a dramatic way with a religious tone.
I shot everything in one day. I walked the PC campus with my Sony EX1 with the Letus Extreme, tripod, my bag of lenses and my home made dolly. I shot for about six hours in clear but very cold conditions. Later that day, I drove five miles to the Dunkin Donuts Center and shot the game footage.
To get the sweet statue shot, I asked a guy on campus with a blower if he would stir up a small tornado full of leaves and he helped me out.
I color graded with Magic Bullet Looks and slowed the 60 fps overcranked footage even more with Twixtor.
The actual spot will be thirty seconds. I posted this four minute piece on my website because I simply had too much footage!

NICTA Big Picture Seminar - October 2009
Senator Lundy gave a significant speech for the NICTA Big Picture seminar series on Government 2.0: co-designing a better democracy. It is a 45 minute speech, and covers open government, open data, Gov 2.0, her Public Spheres initiative and much more. We hope you enjoy.
Full details at http://www.katelundy.com.au/2009/11/25/nicta-speech-government-2-0-co-designing-a-better-democracy/
----
Big Picture Seminar
If the first incarnation of the internet saw the democratisation of information and made us all publishers, the second incarnation of the internet, Web2.0, is the democratisation of innovation and decision-making, and will make us all co-designers of civil society in the 21st century.
This brings with it a great deal of responsibility, perhaps more than most people realise. The role of our Government during this phase of evolution for our system of democracy becomes incredibly important as it will set the tone for how and why citizens could and would engage.
Any period of significant change presents opportunities as well as risks. For Government, a high bar is set by citizens as to their expectations. In this way, these opportunities and risks are amplified through the prism of politics.
Today, I will discuss some of the opportunities and risks that present themselves to the Australian Federal Government as the uses of the internet continue to consolidate around Web2.0 tools and functions.
We describe the opportunity Web2.0 presents to Government as Gov2.0 and I believe that Gov2.0 offers the best opportunity for a forward-thinking, future-oriented government to co-design with the citizens of this country, the government of the future: Government that in enabling, empowering and encouraging of citizens to fully participation in the society in which they live.
Foundation policies:
I am not surprised ICT is once again a leading public policy item of great interest and discussion. At the highest levels of Australian politics we are seeing an enormous shift in the mainstream use of technology, in particular through social media and online networks.
The delivery of new ICT skills and social and economic infrastructure through the Labor policies of the Digital Education Revolution (DER) and the National Broadband Network (NBN) creates a transformational environment for Australia.
I’m both professionally and personally very proud of these policies because they address two necessary foundations of capability and capacity: investing in the skills of next generation AND a universal high bandwidth network. With these transformative policy foundations in place we can begin a conversation about what we can do with the internet, with data, with our collective intellect to improve our lives in a sustainable way, take care of those in need and save our planet from the ravages of climate change.
Governments have a responsibility to provide the leadership to achieve these aspirations. Government is both the initiator of new ideas as well as responders to ideas emerging from the community. How these ideas get traction and enter public discourse is changing as internet usage grows and people take control over their sources of information and how they engage.
More Australians are engaging with the government online and everyday more people are getting their news online than any other way.
Social media tools have changed the game, as a broad demographic range of people start connecting to each other, and sharing knowledge directly, rather than relying on the government and traditional media for information.
Online communications – particularly over the past two or three years – have created a thirst for more genuine dialogue with government, for the sorts of transparent, real time and many-to-many communications that people enjoy every day with each other on social media platforms such as Facebook, Youtube or even Twitter.
Many of these social media tools are hyped up in the traditional media at the moment, and I hear people questioning their usefulness, reflecting on the banality of much of the discourse. I can tell you as someone who is actively experimenting and trying to engage through these tools, that there is a lot of value to be found, particularly when you put social media to work for a specific purpose.
Most people in my experience are more than happy to contribute meaningfully to a conversation, so long as the outcome is meaningful, which means being prepared to act upon the good advice received. It can be a risky business but, as Machiavelli says:
All courses of action are risky, so prudence is not in avoiding danger (it's possible), but calculating risk and acting decisively. Make mistakes of ambition and not mistakes of sloth. Develop the strength to do bold things, not the strength to suffer.
Machiavelli
This is a major challenge for government. So it is inspiring to see government departments and agencies have already been experimenting with social media tools, with no major disasters

Toccata
Toccata is an interactive on-screen installation based on the illusion of playing with the forces of a physical environment. When the visitor walks by, a textile reacts to movement, changing its form and giving the perception of modifying the equilibrium of the environment. An arpeggio of sine tones and noises is generated to give supporting feedback to the user’s physical movement and to make the user experience more immersive.
The application has been developed using openframeworks and Box2d, a 2 dimensional physics simulator engine. The 3d effect is an illusion created by connecting particles as well as overlaying transparency.

Eminence Tone Center ~ Best Guitar / Amp Demo & Reviews underway!
What's inside?
Boys & Girls - New for 2012 (and the latter part of 2011) will be the addition of an Eminence Tone Center A/B/C/D guitar cabinet. I have worked directly w/ Eminence on this, all in effort to give you best of breed demos!
As you know, I'm always trying to improve what I do - and rather than have 1 cabinet for all of my demos, I am now able to pick / choose the speaker that is most appropriate!
Heck - we all know how important speakers are, and how easy they are to replace, so taking that into consideration, my demos will now be tweaked for optimum tone & performance!
Inside my Tone Center is the following (hand-picked by yours truly!)
Top Left -- The brand new ReignMaker™ with patent-pending FDM™ technology (built in modulator knob to adjust speaker output and amplifier interaction).
Top Right -- Patriot Series Texas Heat (for an American sound as big as Texas!)
Bottom Left -- Legend Series V12 (an all-time fav, also found in Soldano speaker cabinets!)
Bottom Right -- Red Coat Governor - Eminence's own take on the Celestion Vintage 30.
For those peeps wanting to know which Eminence Speakers sound most like Celestions -- check out this cross reference guide :

Low Thia Khiang: Focus now on working with the PAP - 27May2012
SINGAPORE: The Workers' Party (WP) wants to move on from the Hougang by-election and work with the ruling People's Action Party (PAP) for a better Singapore.
WP's Secretary-General Low Thia Khiang struck a conciliatory tone on Sunday morning in contrast to the strong words he had for the PAP on Saturday night.
He made this comment ahead of a victory parade to thank voters, following WP's win in the Hougang by-election on Saturday.
Hundreds of supporters lined the streets of Hougang Avenue 5 to welcome their new parliamentary representative Png Eng Huat who defeated PAP's Desmond Choo in the by-election.
At one point, the teams from the Workers' Party and People's Action Party exchanged greetings.
Before the victory parade, Mr Low was asked by reporters about Deputy Prime Minister Teo Chee Hean's response to his criticisms of the way the PAP ran its campaign.
Mr Teo had said he was surprised by Mr Low's accusations of "character assassination."
Mr Low said it was time to move on and noted Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong's call to re-focus on long-term issues.
He said: "I have noted what he said. I think The Workers' Party will move on from this election and work together with the ruling party for the betterment of Singapore."
Mr Low was also asked about party unity, especially after minutes on the circumstances surrounding Mr Png's position on the nomination for Non-Constituency MP had been leaked.
He said he was not about to start a "witch hunt".
"What's important is, what you're doing, what's your motivation, what you want to do. I think these are important factors to me. And I do trust people and party because if you don't trust people, how do you work? Of course, there's also the risk of being played out. That's life. So you play me out, so be it. I think that's luck, I'll move on.
As for Dr Poh Lee Guan, who picked up a Political Donation Certificate without the party's knowledge and claimed that he had no intention to run in the by-election but was just a "spare tyre", Mr Low said the Central Executive Council will have to decide if any disciplinary action will be taken.
For now, the spotlight returns to the incoming MP for Hougang.
MP-elect for Hougang SMC Mr Png Eng Huat has pledged to serve residents well.
"I want to thank them, I will work hard. And also this nine-day campaign is very tiring. The campaign doesn't really start during the nine days. It started when I was appointed Aljunied Constituency Committee. So it wasn't just the nine days per se. So it's a long, long campaign. So I hope to at least now get to work with the mandate."
With the by-election over, the real work for Mr Png begins now. At the national level, Mr Png has said that he will bring up the issues of education, transport, and the plight of low-wage workers in Parliament.
And at the local level, voters said they hope that Mr Png will be able to carry out his campaign promises of bringing upgrading to Hougang.
