Why does a Catholic priest wear a collar? Oct. 3 (Wednesday Wisdom)
Why do Catholic priests wear a roman collar? This tradition developed in the 1500s. Priests already wore special clothes (the cassock) and the fashionable collars of the time were adapted for priestly use. The roman collar is still worn by priests today as a sign of their vocation and service to the Church.
When a priest is ordained in the sacrament of Holy Orders, he receives special graces and abilities. He can change bread and wine into the Body and Blood of Christ in the Mass and he can forgive sins in the sacrament of Penance. The priest is able to do these things because he acts "in persona Christi." That means the priest acts in the person of Christ. He is Jesus' special representative on earth, and so dresses in a special way so we can know that he is a priest.
Just as humans are both body and soul, so are the rituals and symbols of the Church a mix of internal and external signs. Husbands and wives wear wedding rings to show their union and devotion. Priests, deacons, and seminarians wear collars and other clerical clothing to show their union with Christ and His Church.
Everyone who sees a priest wearing a collar knows that he is part of the Catholic Church. It inspires people to think of eternal things, and so the priest can evangelize even with the way he dresses.
Plus, when a priest is recognized because of his collar, he can help in emergency situations. People will know who to ask for help or for the sacraments, especially Confession and Anointing of the Sick, if there is an emergency.
So the roman collar is sign of a priest's vocation and dedication. Whenever he wears his collar, the priest serves as a visible sign of God and the Church in the world.

Plant Medina - Do Clerical Collars Hinder Mission?
Some thoughts and reflections on wearing clerical collars in non-liturgical settings (outside of Sunday worship, hospital visits, and weekday services). What do you think? Would you be more likely to talk to a Pastor who has a collar on or would that make you not want to give them the time of day? Does it not matter?

The MOST HAUNTED places on Earth: Palermo Italy PARANORMAL EVIDENCE
The Capuchin Catacombs of Palermo (also Catacombe dei Cappuccini or Catacombs of the Capuchins) are burial catacombs in Palermo, Sicily, southern Italy. Today they provide a somewhat macabre tourist attraction as well as an extraordinary historical record.
Palermo's Capuchin monastery outgrew its original cemetery in the 16th century and monks began to excavate crypts below it. In 1599 they mummified one of their number, recently-dead brother Silvestro of Gubbio, and placed him into the catacombs.
The bodies were dehydrated on the racks of ceramic pipes in the catacombs and sometimes later washed with vinegar. Some of the bodies were embalmed and others enclosed in sealed glass cabinets. Monks were preserved with their everyday clothing and sometimes with ropes they had worn as a penance.
Originally the catacombs were intended only for the dead friars. However, in the following centuries it became a status symbol to be entombed into the Capuchin catacombs. In their wills, local luminaries would ask to be preserved in certain clothes, or even to have their clothes changed at regular intervals. Priests wore their clerical vestments, others were clothed according to the contemporary fashion. Relatives would visit to pray for the deceased and also to maintain the body in presentable condition.
The catacombs were maintained through the donations of the relatives of the deceased. Each new body was placed in a temporary niche and later placed into a more permanent place. As long as the contributions continued, the body remained in its proper place but when the relatives did not send money any more, the body was put aside on a shelf until they resumed payment.
The last friar interred into the catacombs was Brother Riccardo in 1871 but other famous people were still interred. The catacombs were officially closed in 1880 but tourists continued to visit. The last burials are from the 1920s. One of the very last to be interred was Rosalia Lombardo, then two years old, whose body is still remarkably intact, preserved with a procedure that was lost for decades, but was recently rediscovered. The embalming procedure, performed by Professor Alfredo Salafia, consisted of formalin to kill bacteria, alcohol to dry the body, glycerin to keep her from overdrying, salicylic acid to kill fungi, and the most important ingredient, zinc salts (zinc sulfate and zinc chloride) to give the body rigidity.[1][2] The formula is 1 part glycerin, 1 part formalin saturated with both zinc sulfate and chloride, and 1 part of an alcohol solution saturated with salicylic acid.
The catacombs contain about 8000 mummies that line the walls. The halls are divided into categories: Men, Women, Virgins, Children, Priests, Monks, and Professionals. Some bodies are better preserved than others. Some are set in poses; for example, two children are sitting together in a rocking chair. The coffins were accessible to the families of the deceased so that on certain days the family could hold their hands and they could "join" their family in prayer.
Famous people buried in the catacombs include:
Colonel Enea DiGuiliano (in French Bourbon uniform)
Salvatore Manzella, surgeon
Lorenzo Marabitti, sculptor
Filipo Pennino, sculptor
Son of a king of Tunis who had converted to Catholicism
Allegedly Velázquez, Spanish painter, was buried in the Fuensalida vault of the church of San Juan Bautista (Madrid, Spain), and within eight days his wife Juana was buried beside him.
Giuseppe Tomasi di Lampedusa is sometimes said to be buried in the catacombs, but he is buried in the cemetery next to them.

Mr Adnan Oktar's Views On The People Of The Book 1 (Harun Yahya)
For one thing, the fact that there are Christians and Muslims in the world is a great blessing for Muslims. For there need not have been any. They could have been atheists, irreligious people. But Allah bestowed the blessing of faith on them, and Christians feel a deep love for the Prophet Jesus (pbuh) and Jews for the Prophet Moses (pbuh). These faiths have been distorted, of course, and the Qur'an has told the members of those faiths of the deficiencies stemming from these distortions. The gaps and deficiencies in Christianity and Judaism are revealed in the Qur'an. Therefore, Christians are our brothers for they are of the old religion of Islam. We must treat them with love and affection. We must avoid any behavior that might exclude them. We must struggle shoulder to shoulder with them against Darwinism and atheism.
ADNAN OKTAR'S INTERVIEW FOR SEHER TV, IRAN (October 3, 2008)
... Devout Christians love Muslims. The fact that they believe in Allah, await the Prophet Jesus (pbuh), love the blessed Maryam and the other prophets, means they harbor a profound love for Muslims. So what needs to be done is for the devout people all over the world, to embrace one another very tightly. There are two forces in the world. There are those who do not believe in Allah, and there are those who do believe in Him. There is a struggle between the friends and enemies of Allah. We will join with the friends of Allah...
ADNAN OKTAR'S KRAL KARADENIZ TV INTERVIEW (February 20, 2009)
ADNAN OKTAR: Masonry does not have an attitude only against Muslims, because religious Jews in Israel are also crying out bitterly. There are Jews in other parts of the world that I am in contact with and they cannot walk around wearing a kippah. They are insulted, defamed and beaten. They cannot travel around freely, because there is infliction upon them in many parts of the world. Pious Christians are also in similar circumstances, for instance a nun may walk around in some regions of Italy but she cannot travel in many places without restraint. They either insult or offend her, or she is mocked. It is even harder to travel around in other parts of the world. Just consider a man in clerical clothing, he would face incredible suffering.
This means there is an atheist zionist plan to divide, oppress and do away with religious people. The atheist zionists and masons have a plan. This is the plan to eradicate all believers in Allah from over the earth because satan is not only against Islam but also against all believers in Allah. This is the goal of satan.
Therefore devout Christians and devout Muslims should unite against infidels, atheists and masons. If we do not get united, we will confront with alliance of masons. They are united against us just like atheist zionists. However, believers are divided. In that case their power could prevail over. Consider that all oppressed Muslims in various parts of the world come together along with devout Jews and devout Christians. Whose power would resist against that alliance! Then we should be on the side of unity, it is very important that believers protect and watch over one another.
2- OUTLOOK OF ISLAM ON THE PEOPLE OF THE BOOK
ADNAN OKTAR'S IRAN TV INTERVIEW (Istanbul, October 2007)
ADNAN OKTAR: Approach of Christianity towards the Jews is not that pleasant as described in the Bible, but the Qur'an tells us we must feel affection for the Jewish people, for the Jews. We must feel love for the Jews in general. I mean, if someone is a genuine Jew and sincerely wants to live by his faith, he is one of the People of the Book. And if one wishes, one can marry these people, marry their women. One can eat with them and have business relations and social relations with them, and live in the same part of town. We can live as brothers. In that sense, love for the Jews is a religious obligation. This is very normal and useful, and itself an act of worship. But the real danger, and the problem we face, is that unbelieving Jews portray themselves as devout and seek to rule the world, under the influence of satan and with their links to freemasonry. Otherwise, no harm comes to anyone from devout, sincere Jews, who merely live according to their own religion. They seek to abide by the commands of the Torah and Islam protects them

Meet the 24 new cardinals
October 20, 2010. Benedict XVI announced he will appoint 24 new cardinals on November 20th. Among them are two Americans Archbishops: Donald William Wuerl of Washington, D.C., and Raymond Leo Burke, prefect of the Tribunal of the Apostolic Signatura.
Other noteworthy appointees are the Archbishop of Aparecida, Brazil, Raymundo Damasceno Assis, Archbishop José Manuel Estepa Llaurens of Spain, Archbishop Emeritus of Quito, Ecuador, Raúl Eduardo Vela Chiriboga, and the Pope's current delegate to the Legionaries of Christ, Velasio De Paolis.
In total there are 15 Europeans, ten from Italy alone, four Africans, two Americans, two from Latin America and one from Asia.
Among the new cardinals is the Egyptian Antonios Naguib, Patriarch of Alexandria of the Copts, and the Archbishop of Warsaw, Poland, Kazimierz Nycz.
The Pope has also appointed senior Vatican officials such as the prefect of the Congregation for the Causes of Saints Angelo Amato and the prefect of the Pontifical Council for Culture, Archbishop Gianfranco Ravasi.
From the nominees, four are over 80 years old and therefore can not participate in a conclave. They include the Italians Elio Sgreccia and Domenico Bartolucci, the German Walter Brandmuller and Spaniard José Manuel Estepa Llaurens.
After the consistory, set for November 20th, the college of cardinals will hold 122 electors. Today there are 60 cardinals that have been named by Benedict XVI, 50 with voting powers and ten without.
This is the third consistory that Benedict XVI has celebrated in his papacy. The last was held in November 2007 when he named 23 new cardinals.
The new cardinals will receive the red biretta from the Pope on the 20th of November. The next day they will receive the cardinal's ring in a solemn ceremony in St. Peter's Basilica.
Only after completing these ceremonial rites can one enter a conclave.
When a conclave is called to elect a new Pope it is made up of a maximum of 120 cardinals. When a cardinal turns 80 he may retain his title but can no longer participate in a conclave.
Cardinals are identifiable by their red clothing—including their clerical robes the cassock and mozzetta, as well as their hats, the biretta and zucchetto. The color is meant to symbolize the cardinals' willingness "to shed blood for the increase of the Christian faith."
Cardinals are generally appointed to be members of specific Vatican agencies. They participate in consistories for important Church discussions, in addition to conclaves when selecting a new pope.
The pope is generally chosen from members of the College of Cardinals, though technically any unmarried Catholic male could be chosen.

Cook County Jail Mistakenly Release Convicted Killer
02/01/2013
The FBI has joined in the manhunt for convicted murderer Steven Robbins, who was allowed to walk out of Cook County Jail Wednesday night.
It appears to have been a clerical error, a very embarrassing clerical error, in a system that is still heavily reliant on the passage of paper.
"We let people down and we're going to fix this," Cook County Sheriff Tom Dart said Friday afternoon.
While the sheriff's police have some leads as to the possible whereabouts of this convicted killer, he remains at large.
"It was a clerical error," said Dart. "It appears at this point--I hate being definitive right now, because it has been less than 24 hours since we have been made aware that he was gone, and we spent most of the time looking for him, but our initial investigation appears to be a clerical error."
Robbins was convicted 10 years ago for a murder in Indianapolis. He was doing a 60-year prison sentence in Michigan City. Tuesday, he was driven from the prison to Chicago because of a 20-year-old outstanding criminal warrant in Cook County.
The intent was to clear the outstanding warrant from the books, so Robbins went to court in Chicago Wednesday. The warrant was formally quashed, the paperwork was carted out, and back to jail went Robbins, who should have been returned to Indiana, but what is seen in the jail is that the old Cook County charge had been dismissed, so Robbins, a convicted killer, was allowed to go free.
Robbins walked out in civilian clothing from Goodwill given to him by the jail. The state's attorney said there was no need to bring Robbins to Cook County in the first place.
"The sheriff's police and their extradition unit and fugitive warrant unit asked for us to bring him back, and they actually have the responsibility to bring him back," said Cook County State's Attorney Anita Alvarez, "and several days prior to him being brought here, one of our assistant state's attorneys told the Cook County sheriff's police that there was no need to bring him back because the case had been dismissed back in 2007."
Because no paperwork had gone back to the jail about Robbins coming from Indiana, all the people in the records room saw was that the guy's court case was dismissed.
So Robbins, like another 200 people every day, was release and he was released like the other 200, out the front door of the jail.
Robbins is considered dangerous. The FBI and Marshals Service are offering a combined reward of up to $10,000 for information that leads to the apprehension of Robbins.
The 44-year-old is 5'5", 190 pounds, with a tattoo on the right side of his neck that says "Nicole."

Khampa and Amdo people area are largely nomadic and their clothing is adapted to suit such a lifestyle. From generation to generation, Khampas have lived on the Henduan Mountain Range situated at the border of Sichuan, Yunnan, Qinghai, and Tibet. This high mountain range with deep valleys, intertwined rivers, and harsh natural environment, shapes the valiant but warm-hearted character of Khampa and their tradition and customs of striding down the mountains to embark on business. When Khampas strayed outside their homeland they were held in awe and fear. They were the warriors of Tibet who fought for many long years to protect their country and their faith. Today the proud Khampa spirit remains. Kham is a high altitude, bitterly cold area, with a long winter, short summer, and a huge temperature disparity between day and night. The robes worn by the Khampa people are consequently baggier and looser than those worn in the -Tsang area, making it easier for them to slip their arms in and out of their sleeves as they please. At night, their robes are untied at the waist and used as bedding. It is the custom for women, after easing out of their sleeves, to tie them at the back, while men tie them at the front. Amdo people generally wear their robes with the right sleeve hanging free. Being nomads, ornaments are a way to carry their wealth (cash) in a practical manner. Khampa people love to adorn themselves with jewelry and have a particular liking for agate, coral, amber, pearls, turquoise, ivory, gold and silver. Two necklaces, dating back 4,000-5,000 years, have been unearthed from Amdo's Karub Ruins. One is made up of 40 cuboidal stones and 20 cylindrical bone segments. Its style is fundamentally the same as those worn by the Khampa people today.
In Amdo and Kham, clothing accessories and ornaments are seen as a symbol of wealth and beauty. The poorest of people will trade all they have for a few ornaments, thereby giving them the confidence to hold their heads up before their peers. These days, the wealthier Khampa people would think nothing of spending hundreds of thousands of yuan on a single ornament.
Clothing ornaments range from those worn on the crown of the head, to the hair, ears, neck, chest, waists, wrists and fingers. They include hairpins, earrings, necklaces, amulet boxes, flint bags, sewing kits, purses, waist knives, bracelets and rings, made of gold, sliver, copper and ivory and inlaid with gem stones.
The clothing in Amdo falls into three styles: pastoral, agricultural and clerical. The clothes worn by herders are usually made from home produced fabric, such as sheep hide and home-woven woolen fabrics, the ornaments they wear are more sophisticated, elaborate and expensive than those of agricultural inhabitants. Agricultural areas utilize a greater scope of fabrics, such as leather, silk and wool, and the women wear fewer, more delicate ornaments than pastoral women. In Kham, both men and women wear their hair long, styled in such a way as to reflect gender, marriage status, and their region.
Amdo women, both in the city and nearby agricultural areas, plait their hair into braids and intertwine them with red silk thread to make a single braid. This hairstyle is worn with red silk thread to make a single braid. This hairstyle is worn with a piece of dark-red coral inlaid with a turquoise pinned to the crown. Women in pastoral areas prefer yellow amber hair ornaments. In Amdo's Garma, Lhatog and Gyamda, unmarried women wear a single piece of yellow amber in their hair, while married women wear at least three. Younger women wear a single plait, which they decorate with gem stones, shells and gold, and silver and jade ornaments, the total weight of which can add up to a few kilos.
Khampa men also plait their into a single braid, extended by a braid of woven red and black silk threads, then wound up around the crown, leaving red silk threads, hero strings, hanging over their forehead. Men in farming areas do not generally wear hair ornaments, while in pastoral areas, men wear a silver, diamond-shaped hairpin. More affluent men wear large rings or ivory rings around their braid. Khampa men and women in pastoral and agricultural areas wear Tibetan knives at their waist. Men in their holiday best wear two knives, one long and one short, together with a flint box. In some areas, men also wear a gilded amulet box. The long knife in silver sheath is engraved with a tiger, lion, dragon or phoenix. A woman's knife is shorter. It usually hangs beside a silver sewing kit at the belt. In the past Khampa men and women wore knives for use in their daily lives and for self-protection, with purposes of adornment carrying the lowest priority. In the wake of recent social development, wearing a knife these days is purely decorative rather than for practical purpose.
