Partially Examined Life podcast - Frege - The Logic of Language
This is an excerpt from a prior episode of The Partially Examined Life podcast, discussing selected essays of Gottlob Frege. You can find the entire unabridged Frege podcast, along with dozens of others discussing philosophers from Aristotle to Wittgenstein, at the Partially Examined Life website: www.partiallyexaminedlife.com About PEL The podcasters were all graduate students in philosophy at the University of Texas at Austin back in the Clinton years. They all left the program at some point before getting their doctorates and have consequently since had time to get outside that whole weird world of academia and reflect on it and the various philosophical topics with a different, and probably much more lazy, perspective.

Articulate: a Conversational Interface for Visual Analytics
'Articulate' is a methodology that uses natural language to interact with visualizations. It is part of 'Project Lifelike' - a research initiative to provide a more natural alternative for interacting with computers. As computing becomes more accessible through the Internet, and more recently mobile phone applications, there is renewed interest in organic and seamless ways to harness the power of this technology. Human speech is a promising and attractive approach. 'Articulate' is a system that applies natural language processing and machine learning techniques in the area of data visualization and analysis. Its goal is to automatically translate natural language queries into meaningful representations of data. 'Articulate' incorporates a natural language parser with machine learning algorithms to translate spoken language. The user's input sentence is parsed into a syntactic tree tagged with part-of-speech labels, from which a feature vector can be extracted to represent the query. Based on this set of features, a supervised learning algorithm identifies the intended visual analytic task, which is used to guide a graph generation algorithm in determining the appropriate visualization to present to the user. The ultimate goal of this research is to allow users to employ advanced visualization techniques without the burden of first having to learn a complex or cumbersome user interface. 'Articulate' is a step towards a time when computers will understand the user's <b>...</b>

Class Description - Morphology and Syntax
This class deals with selected aspects of English and other languages. It is subdivided into two parts. The goal of the first part of the class is to introduce the basic morphological concepts that are used to describe and explain the internal structure of words. Why can we say book-sell-er-s but not *sell-s-er-book? What is the typical morphological structure of an analytic language? How do synthetic languages realize inflection? The second part emphasizes all those aspects of English grammar where English is radically different from other languages, eg the formal and functional properties of English verbs, subject and object selection, clause internal and external operations.

Costa Concordia Accident. cruise ship italy Ship Captain. CJB We ' implies that there was more than one person present at the time he left the ship (which there probably was, but not confirmed at this stage who they were) The captain is the highest ranking officer on board a cruise ship, so he should be using the pronoun I, but he doesn't want to take ownership or responsibility for his negligence (crashing the ship), so he instead uses ' We ' to try and deflect some of the blame onto others, who are not introduced... probably because they could verify (or dismiss) the captains claims that he was indeed the last one off the ship.

Students have been crammed into larger class sizes while the quality of teaching has deteriorated, in large part due to a lack of funding from local and federal governments. John Ralston Saul, one of Canada's most celebrated authors and essayist, has warned us that "Canada's democracy... is eroding with every dime deducted from education budgets." I have stated previously that I believe as a collective we must understand that democracy can only exist in a society with an educated populace, and the right for self-governance can only be obtained through knowledge. I also believe that as long as the Internet remains Neutral, we, as a global community, can make a difference. We can fill the gap left behind by our governments and be proactive in educating our children. Sharing our communal experiences and knowledge is the essence of the Internet and chycho.com is proud to be a part of this movement. The information contained and conveyed through this medium is what will shape our future, and this site was created to represent a unique personal perspective and to contribute in bringing about positive changes. Oracle Analytic Functions
Learn Advanced Oracle Analytic Functions. SQL is a language that allows you to perform queries to answer a wide range of questions about your data. While standard SQL is quite powerful, there are many questions that it cannot answer at all or that it can only answer with complex and inefficient SQL workarounds. Questions about running totals, percent of total, and ranking within a group fall into this area. Also, more complex issues such as Top-N within a group and aggregates over a range also fall in this arena. These questions can be easily answered via a new class of SQL statements called Analytic Functions. This presentation will show you how to use Oracle's Analytic Function extensions to SQL to answer these questions simply and efficiently.

Engineering Data Analysis (with R and ggplot2)
Google Tech Talk (more info below) June 6, 2011 Presented by Hadley Wickham, Assistant Professor, Dobelman Family Junior Chair, Department of Statistics, Rice University. ABSTRACT Data analysis, the process of converting data into knowledge, insight and understanding, is a critical part of statistics, but there's surprisingly little research on it. In this talk I'll introduce some of my recent work, including a model of data analysis. I'm a passionate advocate of programming that data analysis should be carried out using a programming language, and I'll justify this by discussing some of the requirement of good data analysis (reproducibility, automation and communication). With these in mind, I'll introduce you to a powerful set of tools for better understanding data: the statistical programming language R, and the ggplot2 domain specific language (DSL) for visualisation.

Analytic Epistemology
This clip discusses some of the schools of thought in contemporary analytic epistemology. First, the clip mentions Bertrand Russells dislike for the standard notion of what constitutes "knowledge" in philosophy, believing it to be to much too vague. Then there is a brief summary of GE Moore's "Proof of an External World" and his views on foundationalism. The clip then mentions Ludwig Wittgenstein's idea that "meaning is use" within social contexts, and that philosophical obstacles are really just miscommunication within "language games." Simply put, Wittgenstein thought that there were no such things as genuine philosophical problems, and that philosophy was merely a byproduct of linguistic misunderstandings. The clip then discusses the differences between foundationalism and coherentism and WVO Quine's notion of the seamless "web of belief." Quine was a strong proponent of the natural sciences, and thought that findings in the natural sciences could shed significant light onto age-old philosophical questions concerning the nature of the mind and knowledge. The clip then summarizes "The Gettier Problem" which challenged the Platonic definition of knowledge as "justified true belief," and then ends with definitions of internalism/externalism, and Alvin Goldman's causal theory of knowledge.

Medical Records Text Analytics Solution for Health Plans
Medical Record Text Analytics for Health Plans - Delivers the capability to read free form text in medical records such as chart notes, operatory notes, physician correspondence, admission notes, discharge notes, consult notes, nuclear medicine reports, pathology lab reports, and so forth to discover both content and context, then analyze the results and transform those findings into actionable, context based structured data. This data can then be used to provide a dashboard to streamline medical review of claims pended for additional information and be loaded into a data warehouse and combined with existing claims data to enhance insight into medical management, provider quality, pay for performance, wellness programs, etc.. As part of the process, the solution can also be used to assign Snomed CT, LOINC, ICD, & CPT/HCPCS coding to free form text in medical records.
