Wood Ridge apartment hearing postponed

A specially called meeting of the Building and Standards Commission has been canceled, postponing a hearing about a troubled Southeast Austin apartment complex where a walkway collapsed in May.

One of the four commissioners scheduled to attend could not make it to the 6:30 p.m. meeting Tuesday, citing personal reasons, said Chip Somerville, attorney for Wood Ridge’s prospective buyer. Four of the seven commissioners are needed to hold a meeting.

Last month, commissioners wanted the city, the owner and potential buyer of the apartments at 1900 Burton Drive to come back with a resolution Tuesday about the fines the apartment has accrued because of code violations.

The owner David Andrew of La Jolla, Calif., has offered to pay $220,000 of the more than $465,000 in fines, but Somerville said that his client could not pay the rest.

The fines — which accrue by $15,000 per week — began after a walkway collapse in May that displaced more than 160 residents. No one was injured.

Shortly after the incident, the property was hit with about 700 code violations. City inspectors found all of the complex’s 15 second-story walkways to be substandard or in need of repairs, with five “in imminent danger of collapse.”

The commissioners will revisit Wood Ridge at their next regularly scheduled meeting April 24, Somerville said.
