Description: The techniques, symbolism and culture surrounding hand-dyed cotton and silk garments known as Indonesian Batik permeate the lives of Indonesians from beginning to end: infants are carried in batik slings decorated with symbols designed to bring the child luck, and the dead are shrouded in funerary batik. Clothes with everyday designs are worn regularly in business and academic settings, while special varieties are incorporated into celebrations of marriage and pregnancy and into puppet theatre and other art forms. The garments even play the central role in certain rituals, such as the ceremonial casting of royal batik into a volcano. Batik is dyed by proud craftspeople who draw designs on fabric using dots and lines of hot wax, which resists vegetable and other dyes and therefore allows the artisan to colour selectively by soaking the cloth in one colour, removing the wax with boiling water and repeating if multiple colours are desired. The wide diversity of patterns reflects a variety of influences, ranging from Arabic calligraphy, European bouquets and Chinese phoenixes to Japanese cherry blossoms and Indian or Persian peacocks. Often handed down within families for generations, the craft of batik is intertwined with the cultural identity of the Indonesian people and, through the symbolic meanings of its colours and designs, expresses their creativity and spirituality.

K1Xclusive & *folorunsho present: The DCAC Batik Edition by K1X
After the great success of K1X's initial DCAC Sierra Leone series in 2011, K1Xclusive is ready to take this unique collaboration - between a young African artist collective, the *folorunsho project and basketball brand K1X - to the next level...
For this project, 20 street kids from Freetown (Sierra Leone) created a stunning variety of patterns using traditional (and improvised) batik techniques. These extremely personal fabrics were then manufactured into 20 one-of-a kind sneakers each. Everyx pair of the handmade pieces is absolutely unique and limited to 20 pairs per style (sizes 5,5 thru 12) at a retail price of €230. The shoes come with a documentary photo book that illustrates the creation process - and gives a revealing glimpse into the lives of adolescents in Freetown, Sierra Leone. The profits of this limited footwear edition go back directly to the inspiring creators, who are looking to ameliorate their circumstances of living. These young men, who are known as the "Lion Base" crew, grew up in excruciating circumstances and have become a creative brotherhood thru shared experiences and common interests. The proceeds will help 20 hustling adolescents to afford shelter as well as schooling.
* All folorunsho products are non-profit oriented, as all winnings reimburse the Sierra di Lion Sharity

The Process of Making Batik - Artisans at Work
Batik art has been around for over 2000 years, and is especially popular and developed to a sophisticated level in Java Island, Indonesia.
It is an art made through a many stage process which involves drawing a design in hot wax then hand-dying. This process repeated for every color, then dipping in boiling water to removing the wax.
UNESCO (2009): Indonesian Batik is a Preserved Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

Intel Visibly Smart - Batik Fractal
In this Visibly Smart film, contemporary Indonesia is revealed through the eyes of batik fabric and clothing designer, Nancy Margried. Batik is a fabric dyeing and printing method dating back as far as the 6th century and remains a treasured cultural symbol of Indonesia. UNESCO designated Indonesian batik as a Masterpiece of Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity in 2009. Nancy's Bandung-based design atelier, Batik Fractal, is reinventing batik design with 3D modeling software her team created while maintaining much of the traditional production process. The film illustrates how everyday people can realize their creative ambitions while remaining true to their culture through the use of technology.
