Joyce DiDonato plays Francesca Cuzzoni
Joyce DiDonato plays the part of the legendary soprano Francesca Cuzzoni, whom Haendel threatened to defenestrate for her capriciousness! She sings one of her tunes, "Crude furie degli orridi abissi" and we hear the orchestral introduction of "Morirò ma vendicata" (both on her latest album "Furore!")

About the opera and the role: "Opera Giulio Cesare in Egitto was first performed at the King's Theatre, Haymarket, London, on 20th of February 1724 with legendary alto castrato Senesino (Francesco Bernardi) performing the title role, Francesca Cuzzoni as Cleopatra. The opera was an immediate success. Handel revived it (with changes) in 1725, 1730, and 1732; it was also performed in Paris, Hamburg, and Brunswick. Like Handel's other works in the opera seria genre, Giulio Cesare fell into oblivion in the 19th century. In the 20th century, it was revived (in heavily altered form - reorchestrated and revamped with the male castrato roles transposed down for a baritone, tenor or bass) in Göttingen in 1922 by the Handel ...

But due to the technical inefficiencies the sound was very poor. I meant to redo it but never did because of all the other projects I lost myself in. But when I listened to this recent performance of Scholl on radio, I had to get back to my original idea. The sound is still not the top quality one. But it is remarkable, even more so than the recording, the precision he sings with. Sung at the very end of the program, live performance of this aria clearly shows his extraordinary control and precise coloratura without falling behind the tempo or losing his projection. As an added value, his variations in the da capo are impressive yet not exaggerated. This should be a good answer to all the ...

Marisa Galvany - Da Tempeste (1969)
By Request! One of my favorite voices A real Soprano Sfogato, Marisa Galvany in recital singing Handel's famous aria, written for the soprano Francesca Cuzzoni, from the opera "Giulio Cesare". Marisa's heroic coloratura really brings the sense of "storminess" as opposed to the simple pretty singing most lyric coloratura sopranos apply when singing this aria.

Or mi perdo di speranza (Siroë, HÄNDEL) - Simone Kermes (score animation)
No copyright infringement intended. The amazing red-headed German soprano, Simone Kermes (www.simone-kermes.de has ruffled a lot of feathers with her eccentric performing style, which had been criticised as evoking a rock performance rather than a Baroque concert. Nevertheless hers is a formidable voice, with surprising amount of colours and thrust for a very slender (I refrain from saying "girlish". "Soubrette-ish", perhaps) timbre. Here she sings "Or mi perdo di speranza", the finale from the first act of Händel's Siroë, Re di Persia. This excerpt is from Miss Kermes' wonderful 2009 album "La Diva", a collection of Händel arias sung by the legendary Francesca Cuzzoni (en.wikipedia.org Petrucci page for Siroë: imslp.org Libretto for Siroë: www.haendel.it Amazon page for "La Diva: Arias for Cuzzoni": www.amazon.com

George Frideric Handel - L'amor che per te sento
Alessandro (Alexander the Great, HWV 21) is an opera written for the Royal Academy of Music (1719) composed by George Frideric Handel in 1726. Paolo Rolli was the librettist and based the story on Ortensio Mauro's La superbia d'Alessandro. This was the first opera where Handel had cast together in the same opera the famous singers Faustina Bordoni, as Rossane, and Francesca Cuzzoni, as Lisaura. Handel made use of their real-life professional rivalry in his treatment of the story.[1] The original cast also included Francesco Bernardi. Handel had originally planned Alessandro to be his first contribution to the 1725-1726 season of the Royal Academy. However, Bordoni did not arrive in London in time to stage Alessandro, and Handel substituted his own Scipione in March and April of 1726 until her arrival. The opera received its first performance on 5 May 1726 at the King's Theatre, London.[2] The story is based around Alexander the Great's journey to India, where he meets Poro, the king of India, who was the subject of another Handel opera of that name.

Handel: Life of a Pop Icon This unique documentary marks the 250th Anniversary of Handel's death: April 14, 2009. George Frideric Handel (1685-1759) was the first musician to become a pop icon. His hits like, 'Hallelujah', 'Sarabande' or the Coronation Anthem 'Zadok the priest', which re-emerged in the Champions League Hymn are ear-catchers all over the world and his musical genius and business acumen were brilliant alike. His personality was as eccentric as it was mysterious. His life story abounds in amazing anecdotes -- he was, by the way, the first composer in history about whom a biography was written. The film is a high-class documentary consisting of 60% re-enactment which show dramatic and hilarious anecdotes from Handel's life including historic personalities like Italian cembalo virtuoso Domenico Scarlatti, German composer Johann Mattheson and opera diva Francesca Cuzzoni and spooky quack John Taylor. The re-enactments are embedded in the story of Handel's life, filmed at original locations in Germany, Italy and Great Britain, which combine to make this powerful and witty documentary. Handel - G. Cesare in Egitto "Cara Speme" Marianne Rorholm
George Frideric Handel Giulio Cesare, HWV 17 Cara speme, questo core Act I, Scene 2 Libretto by Nicola Francesco Haym, after Giacamo Francesco Bussani. This is not my most favorite version but, since I uploaded another aria from the same production, I will follow suit.. I wish I had the one with Lorraine Hunt Lieberson, she is my favorite for this aria.. I want to upload a few more arias from this production of Cesare.. After that I want to post the different versions.. I just love Handel operas, Cesare in particular... About the opera and the role: Opera Giulio Cesare in Egitto was first performed at the King's Theatre, Haymarket, London, on 20th of February 1724 with legendary alto castrato Senesino (Francesco Bernardi) performing the title role, Francesca Cuzzoni as Cleopatra and the castrato Gaetano Berenstadt in the role of Ptolemy, or Tolomeo as he is called in the Italian libretto. Sesto (or Sextus) is the son of Cornelia and Pompey who has been killed by the Egyptians to show their loyalty to Caesar. The part of Sesto was first cast as a woman and then recast in Handel's lifetime as a tenor part. It is mostly cast as a trousers role in contemporary productions. Cleopatra is in disguise and using the name Lidia. She overhears Cornelia and Sesto planning to avenge Pompey's murder by Cleopatra's brother Tolomeo. Cleopatra offers her help and Sesto rejoices, believing that they will soon have their revenge. Sesto assures her that he will fulfill his duty while taking ...
