An Introduction to Glyndebourne
Founded in 1934 by John Christie and his opera singer wife, Audrey Mildmay, Glyndebourne is committed to presenting opera of the highest quality, commissioning new work, developing new talent and reaching new audiences. Crucially, Glyndebourne has remained financially independent since 1934. Although it receives valued Arts Council support for the Tour and some educational work, the Festival receives no public subsidy. Glyndebourne is a registered charity, funded by box office income, its members and supporters. The Glyndebourne Festival presents six productions each year in a 1200-seat opera house built in 1994. Glyndebourne on Tour, founded in 1968, takes three productions around the UK each autumn. Together, Festival and Tour present about 120 performances a year to an audience of around 150000. Glyndebourne's widely respected Education programme, established in 1986, hosts over 230 community and outreach events a year. And Glyndebourne has pioneered using recordings to bring its work to a worldwide audience through broadcasts, cinema screenings, DVDs and internet streaming. Rossini: La Cenerentola - Glyndebourne Festival Opera
La Cenerentola is Gioachino Rossini's version of the popular Cinderella story, an exciting mixture of comedy, pathos, coloratura fireworks and masquerade. This Glyndebourne production by John Cox captures perfectly the fairy-tale spirit of the piece, matched by Allen Charles Klein's imaginative scenery, distorted like three-dimensional cut-outs in an old-fashioned story book. Cast: Angelina - Kathleen Kuhlmann, Ramiro - Laurence Dale, Clorinda - Marta Taddei, Tisbe - Laura Zannini, Don Magnifico - Claudio Desderi, Dandini - Alberto Rinaldi, Alidoro - Roderick Kennedy. Rossini: Le Comte Ory - Glyndebourne Festival Opera
Rossini's opera is set in a medieval French court at a time when all the menfolk have gone off to join the crusades, leaving the women longing for them. In their absence, the licentious Comte Ory, his page and their followers dress up as nuns to get into the castle and raid both the women and the wine cellars. Rossini's witty comedy of lust and sexual disguise is also a hugely-crafted work, containing several masterly set pieces. This colourful production for Glyndebourne is directed by Jérôme Savary, the actor and comedian, and artistic director of Le Théâtre Nationale de Chaillot in Paris. Andrew Davis conducts his second Rossini opera at Glyndebourne, following the success of Ermione in 1995. Cast: Le Comte Ory - Marc Laho, Raimbaud - Ludivoc Tézier, Adèle - Annick Massis, Ragonde - Jane Shaulis, Tutor - Julien Robbins, Isolier - Diana Montague. Britten: Albert Herring - Glyndebourne Festival Opera
Benjamin Britten's comic opera which is gently laced with moments of farce, is a jocular parody on life in East Suffolk at the turn of the 20th century. It is a quaint, nostalgic journey to a bygone England and the journey has come full circle back to Glyndebourne where this piece was premiered in 1947. The ensuing antics are brilliantly characterised by a strong British cast in this production, which is infused with freshness and limitless charm. Rake's progress Trio and Aria Persson Lehtipuu Glyndebourne 2010
Igor Stravinsky The rake's progress ACT I First Scene (The garden of the house of Truelove in the field on a spring afternoon. On the right side of the house, a fence with an iron gate. Anne and Tom sit together under a pergola) Trio ANNE The woods are green and bird and beast at play for all things keep this festival of May. With fragrant odours and with notes of cheer, the pious earth observes the solemn year. TOM Now is the season when the Cyprian Queen with genial charm translates our mortal scene, when swains their nymphs in fervent arms enfold and with a kiss restore the Age of Gold. ANNE, TOM How sweet within the budding grove How sweet beside the pliant stream to walk, to love, to lie, to dream. (Truelove leaving the house and remains apart them) TRUELOVE Oh may a father's prudent fears unfounded prove, and ready vows and loving looks be all they seem. In youth we fancy we are wise, but time has shown, alas, too often and too late, we have not known the hearts of others or our own. ANNE Love tells no lies. ANNE, TOM And in love's eyes we see our future state, ever happy, ever fair: sorrow, hate, disdain, despair, rule not there. But love alone reigns o'er his own. Recitative TRUELOVE (Truelove is about Ana) Anne, my dear. ANNE Yes, father. TRUELOVE Your advice is needed in the kitchen. (She enters the house) Tom, I have news for you. I have spoken on your behalf to a good friend in the City, and he offers you a position in his counting house. TOM You are too ...

Rossini: Ermione - Glyndebourne Festival Opera
Recorded at Glyndebourne's superb new opera house, this lavishly praised production of Rossini's forgotten and unusual tragic opera has proved to be an unequivocal success. Based on Racine's Andromaque, this account of the Greek and Trojan love tangle has been set by Graham Vick in the classically-inspired auditorium of an Italian opera house, rather than in ancient Greece. The set designs, with their stricking colours, forms and lighting are as if created escpecially for the small screen. Cast: Anna Caterina Antonacci - Ermione Diana Montague - Andromaca Bruce Ford - Oreste Jorge Lopez-Yanez - Pirro Paul Austin Kelly - Pilade Paul Nilon - Attalo Gwynne Howell - Fenicio Julie Unwin - Cleone Lorna Windsor - Cefisa Oliver Bridge - Astianatte Buy from Amazon: smarturl.it www.warnerclassics.com

Mozart: Marriage of Figaro Glyndebourne 1990 Cherubino's aria Voi che sapete
Taken from the BBC broadcast of a 1990 Glyndebourne Festival performance. Mozart: Marriage of Figaro Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment Conductor: Simon Rattle Production: Peter Hall Cherubino - Marianne Rorholm In 1990 the Glyndebourne Festival had a little revolution in its sacred halls: Simon Rattle conducted a production of Mozart's Le nozze di Figaro. What was so special about this production is the fact that for the first time in the festival's history an orchestra of period instruments was used. To up the ante, there was also a radical departure of its 56 year old established performance practice: Mozart was to be performed with full use of appoggiaturas and ornamentation. Stravinsky: The Rake's Progress (Glyndebourne)
Available from Opus Arte on DVD and Blu-ray www.opusarte.com www.opusarte.com In this celebrated Glyndebourne Festival production, David Hockney's designs for director John Cox reinterpret the Hogarth etchings that inspired the opera's libretto, written for Stravinsky by WH Auden and Chester Kallman. In 2010, this revival under Glyndebourne's Music Director, Vladimir Jurowski, captured the opera's neo-classical spirit and its juxtaposition of whimsy, cynicism and compassion, prompting the Financial Times to call it, ''as enjoyable a performance of Stravinsky's opera as any that has come along¹.
