Obama at the Baseball Hall of Fame: Travel and Tourism in the U.S. (2014)
The National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum is an American history museum and hall of fame, located at 25 Main Street in Cooperstown, New York, and operated by private interests. It serves as the central point for the study of the history of baseball in the United States and beyond, displays baseball-related artifacts and exhibits, and honors those who have excelled in playing, managing, and serving the sport. The Hall's motto is "Preserving History, Honoring Excellence, Connecting Generations." The word Cooperstown is often used as shorthand (or a metonym) for the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum. Among baseball fans, "Hall of Fame" means not only the museum and facility in Cooperstown, New York, but the pantheon of players, managers, umpires, executives, and pioneers who have been enshrined in the Hall. The first five men elected were Ty Cobb, Babe Ruth, Honus Wagner, Christy Mathewson and Walter Johnson, chosen in 1936; roughly 20 more were selected before the entire group was inducted at the Hall's 1939 opening. As of January 2014, 306 people had been elected to the Hall of Fame, including 211 former Major League Baseball players, 35 Negro league baseball players and executives, 22 managers, 10 umpires, and 28 pioneers, executives, and organizers. 114 members of the Hall of Fame have been inducted posthumously, including four who died after their selection was announced. Of the 35 Negro league members, 29 were inducted posthumously, including all 24 selected since the 1990s. The newest members are executive Jacob Ruppert, umpire Hank O'Day, and player Deacon White, inducted in 2013.[5] In addition, 12 Hall members who were not honored at any induction ceremony due to World War II travel restrictions, the most notable of whom were Lou Gehrig and Rogers Hornsby, were officially recognized at the 2013 ceremony.[6] The induction class of 2014, which will formally enter the Hall on July 27, consists of players Tom Glavine, Greg Maddux, and Frank Thomas, plus managers Bobby Cox, Tony La Russa, and Joe Torre.[7] In addition to honoring Hall of Fame inductees, the National Baseball Hall of Fame has presented 37 men with the Ford C. Frick Award for excellence in broadcasting,[8] 64 with the J. G. Taylor Spink Award for excellence in baseball writing,[9] and two with the Buck O'Neil Lifetime Achievement Award for contributions to baseball.[10] While Frick and Spink Award honorees are not members of the Hall of Fame, they are recognized in an exhibit in the Hall of Fame's library.[11] O'Neil Award honorees are also not Hall of Fame members, but are listed alongside a permanent statue of the award's namesake and first recipient, Buck O'Neil, that stands at the Hall. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Baseball_hall_of_fame- published: 26 May 2014

Honoring The Voices of Our Game
They tell us stories, take us out to the ballgame, and keep us in the game. For all the excitement baseball brings us, it's easy to forget the broadcasters that bridge the game to the fans. The New Yorker's Angell wins Spink Award
LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. -- Roger Angell, a senior editor at The New Yorker magazine and a longtime spinner of feature-length baseball yarns, was voted the winner of the J.G. Taylor Spink Award in the annual balloting among members of the Baseball Writers' Association of America on Tuesday. Angell is the first non-member of the BBWAA to win the Spink, awarded for a meritorious career of baseball writing, which he will receive in Cooperstown, N.Y., on July 26 during next year's Hall of Fame induction weekend. The ceremony at Doubleday Field will include the winner of the Ford C. Frick Award for baseball broadcasting, who is scheduled to be revealed Wednesday, and Joe Garagiola Sr., who was named last week as the recipient of the Buck O'Neil Award. Former managers Bobby Cox, Joe Torre and Tony La Russa will be inducted into the Hall the next day. Angell, 93, was not in attendance at a meeting of the BBWAA on Tuesday at baseball's Winter Meetings, where his winning of the Spink Award was announced, but later he thanked the writers for the honor during a conference call. "It's a great day -- for me, if not for baseball," he said. "I was surprised to find out how much secretly I had hoped this would happen because I was very moved, startled and extremely pleased. I thought it would never happen because I'm not a member of the [BBWAA]. I'm very, very happy and I'm stunned. Old friends and idols have won this award. It's a great honor." Asked if he will be there in July to accept the award, Angell didn't miss a beat. more http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article/mlb/the-new-yorkers-roger-angell-wins-hall-of-fames-spink-award-for-baseball-writing?ymd=20131210&content;_id=64534282&vkey;=news_mlb- published: 11 Dec 2013
