Phillip LaDon Phillips, Jr. (born September 20, 1990) is an American singer-songwriter from Leesburg, Georgia, and the winner of the eleventh season of American Idol.^[1][2][3]

Early life[link]

Phillips was born in Leesburg, Georgia, the son of Sheryl (née LaDon) and Phillip Phillips, Sr.^[4][5] He grew up in Sasser and Leesburg, and attended Lee County High School.^[2] He graduated from Albany Technical College with a major in Industrial Systems Technology, but missed the graduation ceremony due to his obligations to American Idol.^[6] Prior to appearing on American Idol, he worked at his family's pawn shop.

Phillips said his favorite singer is Jonny Lang, and other favorites include John Butler, Dave Matthews and Damien Rice.^[7] He described his music as "jazz, rock alternative sound".^[8] Phillips was mentored by long time friend and brother-in-law Benjamin Neil.

Phillips auditioned in Savannah, Georgia.^[9] He sang "Superstition" by Stevie Wonder.^[9][10] The judges then asked him to perform a second song with his guitar, and he performed Michael Jackson's "Thriller."^[9][10] He advanced to the Hollywood rounds,^[9] and later to the Las Vegas round.^[11]

On February 23, 2012, Phillips was chosen as one of the Top 25 semi-finalists.^[12] After the Top 13 performance night, Phillips was taken to a doctor for possible kidney stones.^[13][14] Phillips became the winner on the finale of American Idol on May 23, 2012, against Jessica Sanchez after a record-breaking total of 132 million votes were cast.^[1] His coronation song "Home" was released after his performance.

Phil Phillips (born Philip Baptiste, March 14, 1926, Lake Charles, Louisiana) is an American singer and songwriter, best known for his 1959 hit, "Sea of Love".

Biography[link]

Philip Baptiste was encouraged to pursue a career as a singer after a school performance of a song called "Sweet Slumber".^[1] He performed with his brothers in a gospel group called the Gateway Quartet and worked as a bellhop before he recorded "Sea of Love" in 1959.

The song was arranged and produced by Eddie Shuler for neighbor George Khoury's Khoury Records.^[2] After three months of work on the arrangement, building up the vocal group and trying out different musicians, the song was ready for release. Baptiste changed his name to Phil Phillips, and dubbed his backing vocalists The Twilights. After a Baton Rouge disc jockey played the song repeatedly,^[1] the recording sold heavily and was leased to Mercury Records.

"Sea of Love" went to #2 in the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 pop chart and spent 14 weeks in the top 40, as well as reaching #1 on the R&B chart. In 1959 it sold over one million copies, and was awarded a gold disc.^[3] Nonetheless, Phillips was paid only $6800, and received no further royalties for the song or its recording.^[4]

Phillips did not release an album to capitalize on his success, due to the unfavorable terms of his deal. "Because I decided to fight for what was rightfully and legally mine, a full album that I recorded was never released. I’m not being paid, nor have I ever been paid, as an artist for 'Sea of Love'. I never received justice and to this day have not received justice."^[1]

The song remains a big seller with notable covers by Del Shannon (which reached #33 on the pop chart in 1982) and The Honeydrippers (which peaked at #3 spending 14 weeks in the top 40 in 1984). Phillips' original version was featured prominently in the 1989 film, Sea of Love starring Al Pacino.

Among Phillips' other songs is "No One Needs My Love Today" (1966), which was recorded by Samantha Juste, co-host of BBC TV's, Top of the Pops. He also recorded an anti-drug spoken word recording, "The Evil Dope", in the late 1960s; the single is considered a cult classic.^[5]

Phillips later worked as a radio DJ. He married and had seven children.

In October 2007, Phillips was honored for his contributions to Louisiana music with induction into The Louisiana Music Hall of Fame.^[6]

His last live performance was in April 2005 at the Jazz Fest in New Orleans, Louisiana a few months before Hurricane Katrina.

The PS22 Chorus is an elementary school chorus from Public School 22 in Graniteville, Staten Island (New York). It is composed of 60-70 fifth-graders, and is directed by Gregg Breinberg. Students are assigned to the chorus after an annual auditioning process at the beginning of each school year. PS22 is the largest elementary school in Staten Island which draws students from a wide cross section of ethnic groups and socio-economic levels. The chorus meets twice a week during school hours to practice, and performs throughout the year at school functions, local events, and on special requests.^[1] It has been featured on several major national news and music networks after its videos had gained international attention within the popular video-sharing site YouTube. To date, the chorus’s videos have been watched more than 45,000,000 times.^[2]

The PS22 chorus was founded in 2000 by the school's music teacher, Gregg Breinberg, who started blogging about it in September 2006 following requests on a Tori Amos fan page, where he had shared some of his videos. Since then the chorus has become an Internet phenomenon. In 2009 New York magazine called it "the best-known elementary-school chorus on the planet".^[3]
